Today I am writing in the voice of Austin, the main character in my upcoming novel The Beast Within (This is not a selection from the novel, but part of my character development journal.)
Today’s writing prompt:
Do you prefer taking risks or having a safety net?
I take risks every day, I’m a doctor. However, I don’t really think that is the type of risk your asking about. Risks verses a safety net? That’s a tough question to answer. I think that deep down, I’d rather have a safety net, it’s what my dad taught me. Follow the rules and you’ll be safe, he used to say. The problem is that it isn’t always easy to follow the rules. Not when the rules, or laws, say not to kill.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to hurt people. I’d rather live a quiet life where no one has to get hurt. But, when survival is on the line, its hard not to do anything and everything it takes. That means, some people will have to die. I can try to minimize the body count, but in the end, there will still be a body count. There is always risk when it comes to life or death situations. The bigger the safety net, I can create for myself, the better.

I wrote in the perspective of one of the characters of the book I’m writing, Hans, but he is answering the prompt for the main character, Ilse.
Ilse may put up the front that she prefers a safety net, but I know her better. She is 100% a risk taker.
Risk taker might not even be the right word. Albeit harsh, her actions oftentimes border on stupidity. Her heart is in the right place, but she always ends up risking her own life, and sometimes even others.
This most recent time, she actually jumped off a cliff into water to try and “save” me. I was falling off a cliff, ready to save myself, when I heard a high-pitched shriek that sounded like, “HAAANNNSS,” and suddenly Ilse was catapulting toward the water with me, her scream piercing the air the whole way down. I was the one that ended up saving her, considering she can’t swim and the water was ice cold. I got her out and even though I could see her shaking from where I was, she jumped up, a fire in her eyes, and looked at me.
“What would you do without me, Hans?”

I’m writing from the perspective of Joseph, a character in my first novella, The Spark
I’ve never gotten anywhere by having a safety net. Does having one make things easier? Yes, it certainly does but in my family, you don’t get anywhere without taking a few risks along the way. Other Shadows are taught to follow the rules and play it safe, but myself and others of high upbringing, we were exempt. We could do what we wanted and it would be excused so we never needed a safety net. Maybe I should have set up a safety puddle if not a net that day I met with the Prophecy Warriors. I knew they were dangerous but I figured they had been taught well enough to not attack me. The others were, but the Flame, she thought the way I did. She was the leader, she could do what she wanted and there would be no repercussions that she couldn’t work around. Maybe Philip should have learned that lesson as well when he set out to avenge me. He tussled with a girl who was not only one of Elincia’s most powerful Flames, but a princess as well. He should have known she presented danger. So, maybe I should prefer to have a safety net but that takes all the excitement out of life. Not that living is an struggle my brother or I have now.

Everyday I take a new risk. Risks are better without the safety net, of course. I love it when I run out head-first into danger, the thrill of the run against all laws of natural physics never ceases to amaze me.
Just last lunar cycle I stole a beautiful pendant off an unattended Jewelers stall in the local market. The run back to my ship was an amazing thrill, and the beautiful obsidian-colored gems sit wonderfully on my desk.
