MEDEA… Like You’ve Never Seen Before!

SYNOPSIS

A slight update of the classic tragedy by Euripides, Medea is a story of betrayal, female power, and revenge. This intimate view into the not-so-happily ever after of the sorceress Medea and the Greek hero Jason presents themes as relevant now as they were 2000 years ago. This out-of-time version explores feminine rage and the true cost of seeking power.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS

Michelle Huguley (Director) and Kevin McDougal (Co-Director)

When the opportunity arose to create my own interpretation of a Greek classic, I jumped. Medea is a piece very personal to me and possibly to anyone who has felt ultimate betrayal. Working with playwright Joy Whitt to take both Euripides and Seneca’s versions of the play, along with inspiration from many translations of the texts, we developed this adaptation as an update with a timeless feel, enduring themes, and a merciless ending. In short, Medea is a priestess, a witch, and the tool with which Jason of the Argo became the renowned Greek hero. In this production, we see the consequences of a woman who sacrificed everything for love and the terrifying wrath of her vengeance. I cannot thank my cast enough for all of their hard work in making this vision come to life. I’d also like to thank Joy, for her dedication to every facet of this show. I’m also eternally grateful to Evil Cheez for giving me the opportunity, yet again, to stretch my directing muscles. And most of all, my incredibly talented co-director, technical director, and professional husband, Kevin, who consistently makes all my dreams come true. I’d also like to dedicate this production to my sister Jessica, who was a powerful sorceress in her own right. “The circle closes, the wheel rolls, and that’s all there is.”

Having a partner as talented and driven as our Madame Director, Michelle, opens up opportunities that you may not think of beforehand. I have done just about everything in the theatre before this new challenge, and I have loved stretching those emotional and physical muscles. I cannot thank our cast enough for their dedication and willingness to adjust. They amaze me with their instincts. Watching Michelle take that raw talent and mold it has been eye opening. Digging into these characters and allowing them to shine through is so fun and I am so proud of this production. I am thrilled to share our hard work with you, the audience.

MEET THE CAST

Joy Whitt – Medea | Playwright

Joy saw Medea performed a few years ago and said to herself, “I have to play Medea.” So she wrote her own version, joined forces with Michelle Huguley & Evil Cheez Productions, and here we all sit today. Joy is so excited to present her adaptation of this adaptation of another adaptation of Euripides’ Medea! Thank YOU for coming to see it!

Valerie Clemons – Nurse

When Valerie said she wanted to venture into something other than comedy, it was go big or go home! This drama packs quite a punch-in-the-gut, and Valerie is so excited to be on stage alongside some of Huntsville’s best talent. Michelle and Kevin have beautiful vision, and Valerie is honored to be a part of this production.

Corby Holland – Jason

Corby is excited (and only slightly emotionally prepared) to join Evil Cheez Productions for the first time in Medea. This marks his 15th year of doing theatrical productions since moving to Huntsville area!

Favorite past roles include Jud in Oklahoma!, Max in The Sound of Music, George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life, Bud in The Bridges of Madison County, Harry Wormwood in Matilda, and Gerry in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

He would like to thank Michelle, Kevin, and Joy for the opportunity to be part of this production and is grateful to be working with such a talented new team — and love (the real kind, not stage love) to Allyson, for always being there and being his greatest audience.

Anna Clay Adams – Chorus 1

Anna Clay Adams is delighted, excited, and grateful to be a part of this production of Medea! She is thrilled that this tale of unhinged and unapologetic feminine rage is getting to be represented and brought to life. Anna Clay lives and works in Tuscaloosa, but can never pass up the amazing opportunity to work alongside all the talented folks in North AL, so the commute is always worth the journey.

Mel Knight – Chorus 2

After a 7-year hiatus, Mel has decided to return to the stage. This production has rekindled her love of the performing arts with a fresh perspective on acting. Mel is thrilled to be back and excited to share this experience with the audience. She would like to thank her husband, Alex, for being incredibly supportive of all her endeavors. Also, she would like to give credit to both Michelle Huguley and Kevin McDougal for helping her dust off and get back on stage. Finally, thank you to her cat, Elton, who has been a terrible line partner but a wonderful little friend.

Tiffany H. Simon – Chorus 3

Tiffany is thrilled to be a part of Evil Cheez’s production of “Medea”. Tiffany participated in various productions with the Tucson Community players, including “South Pacific”, “Gypsy”, “No Admittance”, and countless revues. Tiffany joined the Huntsville theatre community in 2018 with LMP’s production of “American Idiot” and has since performed in numerous productions with Theatre Huntsville, IMP, and Evil Cheez. Tiffany now lives in Madison with her talented husband, Brett, and seven year old star-in-training, Arcadia. Tiffany would like to thank Michelle and Evil Cheez for providing her the opportunity to be a part of this amazing cast and production.

Juan E. Bedolla – Creon

Juan is an animation director and producer. He is new to theatre but makes up for his lack of experience with eager enthusiasm and unearned confidence.

Byron Turner – Aegeus

Byron, an Alabama native, has been involved in the theater on and off for 20 years. He has been a part of multiple productions all over. He is a fairly new cheez cultist and is having so much fun with Evil Cheez that it should be illegal in at least the lower 48 states.

John Seigh – Tutor

John thanks Michelle Huguley for the opportunity to work in “Medea”, his 1st foray in an Evil Cheese show. He’s been doing theater for 40 years and 80+ productions, starting in his church and then Community-Theater. He’s done shows with Theatre Huntsville (TH), Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater (FPCT), Renaissance Theatre (RT), Grissom High School (GHS) and The Whole Backstage (WB) as an actor, director, assistant director, technical director and backstage, in TH’s “Inherit the Wind”, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, FPCT’s “A Christmas Carol” and “Monster in the Closet”, WB’s “Noises Off”, “Mister Roberts” and “The Odd Couple”.

Outside of theater, John loves his family, especially the grandkids and also computers, soccer and bowling. Love always to wife Rene’, Michelle, Nikki, Hudson, Hayden, Mya, Aaron, Samantha, Annalynn, Grantzen, Arabella and his newest, great-granddaughter Lorelai.

And, as always, Forever Bitsy, Bits to John, the guilty one who got him started in theater. My muse, friend & angel…you are missed.
