Anita Blake is confident, skilled, and refreshingly difficult to intimidate. Her work raising the dead and consulting on supernatural crimes gives the story a strong mystery foundation. The tension between Anita and vampire leader Jean-Claude introduces future romantic complications without overwhelming the first plot. Some dialogue and attitudes reflect the era in which it was written, but the book remains an influential example of action-oriented urban fantasy.
