2HVØRHVNØT: To Have or Have Not by Jared K. Chapman ~ Genre: Dystopian Superhero Fantasy, Horror

Welcome to Fellowship City, where the Haves are super-powered, and the Have-Nots are just like you.

The Mighty have all the wealth, fame, power, and superpowers, but even they are subject to the monastery’s control. To maintain peace, telepathic monks see into the past, present, and future to police the other Mighty and the minority of powerless Citizens, who have nothing but their identity tags tattooed on their wrists.

Twenty-year-old Mario lives with his kid sister in one of the many camphouses on the island south of the city. Unlike the other citizens he stands in line with every morning waiting to be bussed to work, he actually likes his downtown job and the Mighty restaurateur who employs him.

At least, he did.

This morning, the grisly, undetected murder of his boss changes everything. In a flash, Mario becomes the primary suspect and must race against time to prove his innocence in a world that oppresses the powerless.

Part READY PLAYER ONE. Part DIVERGENT. Part MINORITY REPORT. Totally Superpowered! 2HVØRHVNØT has fast-paced action, suspense, horror, and mature themes that are sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

What inspired you to write this book?

I had a thought in my head about to be or not to be but applying it to the situation of haves and have-nots, which resulted in the title to have or not to have. I thought that was too presumptuous and cumbersome, so I kept thinking and though To Have or Have Not sounded much better, and I am a Hemingway fan, so there’s a little homage there. I kept thinking and thinking about this title and one day while driving home the numeronym popped into my head 2HVORHVNOT. I thought that would be a cool title for a book, so I began to think what a book with that title would be about.

I immediately thought about a tattooed identity code on someone’s arm. I thought about how it could be scanned and used in the future like credit cards, but I thought that was too obvious and really wasn’t sure what the story would be. Poor people are Have Nots and can’t even use their codes while the reach people can… it seemed like something I’ve seen many times before. So, my mind went somewhere darker. What if only the Have Nots have these identity codes and they’re forced on them? I began to think about the Holocaust and poor lives lost in the camps. I began to think about Nietzche’s idea of the Ubermensch inspiring the Nazis. I began to think about Japanese internment camps and signs that said No Jews Allowed or Colored Only Section. I began thinking about the X-Men stories where normal people wanted to round up the mutants and put them into camps. Then, I thought what if that was flipped. What if the people in power, the majority, were the ones with superpowers.

I started to think about what kind of world that would be. I drew upon a lot of the social psychological theories I had learned through the course of my collegiate life. I found myself really drawn to Sherif, Asch, Milgram, and Zimbardo’s famous experiments. Ultimately, I wanted to delve into conflict resolution between two completely different groups. I also drew upon my religious studies and my interest in science-fiction/fantasy, post-apocalyptic/dystopia speculative fiction, particularly 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, The Dark Tower Series, Running Man, Demolition Man, Minority Report, and Ready Player One. All of these inspired me to create the world of Fellowship City.

In Fellowship City, there is a caste system with the highest, most powerful Mighty being the telepathic seers, monks of Sol & Luna, who police the other Mighty. This creates a world without heroes or villains, because the monks stop any crime or wrongdoing, even wrong-thinking before it happens. They eliminate the bad elements to create a utopian world for them, but in doing so, life is mundane. Their superpowers are meaningless. In this world, a pyrokinetic has a job as a barista reheating coffee in the ceramic mugs of old customers. But in nearly every utopia we find some dystopian element, and for those without powers, this world is a nightmare. They are forced to serve the Mighty, live in camps or slums, and must be tattooed with their scannable identity codes.

What can we expect from you in the future?

This book is launching a world. I am currently working on a prequel trilogy describing the rise of the Mighty. I’m editing the first book, writing the second, and have the third outlined and ready to go. I’m also working on a short story that doesn’t fit in the prequel books or in any sequel books, and I have plans to write more of these short stories to complete the world. I set up 2HVØRHVNØT to have a sequel, which I am currently outlining and expect to release next year. After that, I plan to write a third book in the series, making it a trilogy. I also plan to write three shorter books focusing on three of the character’s origin stories.

Once I have published all the Fellowship City books, I would like to complete the epic novel I started in 1996.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in 2HVØRHVNØT: To Have or Have Not?

There are tons of colorful and interesting characters in my book. The two primary protagonists are Mario and his sister, Zelda. They live in a camphouse on the island south of Fellowship City. Mario works downtown at a trendy restaurant where he has recently been promoted from dish-boy to server. Zelda is still under 18, so she doesn’t have to do “real work,” although she volunteers her time in the orphan house when she’s not the story-keeper for a role playing game called SOFA that she plays with her friends.

My book has three episodes, and Mario is the main protagonist of the first episode. He likes working at the restaurant, because the Mighty who employs him is a good guy compared to some of the other horror stories he’s heard. He and his sister lost their parents seven years ago and lived in the orphan house until Mario was able to get his own camphouse and take Zelda in as her guardian. He’s always felt responsible for her and even now fears that he may not have prepared her for the world she will soon enter, because he’s treated her like a princess ever since. Mario has an eidetic memory, which serves him well as a server, but it’s not always entirely perfect. He’s filled with internal conflict as he blames the Mighty for the loss of his parents but needs to work for the Mighty to survive.

Zelda becomes prominent in episode two. Her brother is the most important thing to her in the world and when things look bleak, she feels that she needs to do something. Usually, she seems rather level-headed and the leader among her friends, but her brother is her kryptonite. She gets tunnel vision and will stop at nothing to protect her protector. She’s smart, funny, and athletic… a butt-kicking princess.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?

Mario and Zelda are obvious, I think. Their father loved the retro games of yesteryear and named his children after his favorites. Jakandy is actually named after Jack Handey from Deep Thoughts on Saturday Night Live. DerMööve is a telekinetic of German ancestry, so I was going for something that could get that across. The Arcane Sawyer just came to me out of nowhere as a blend of Paul Bunyan and Thor. There are many more names with backstories, but I don’t want to give too much away.

I am excited to be one of many tour hosts sharing information about To Have or Have Not by Jared K. Chapman.

I am a single mum of two, who was lucky enough to grow up in Cornwall, where my interest and enthusiasm for books was born. As a result of being located so close to numerous ancient ruins, thus providing me with the ability to roam and investigate, my inquisitive side got the better of me and my passion for fantasy books and creative writing started to grow.
I have lived all over the UK, including Cornwall, Darlington and Newcastle. My first book began as an interactive bedtime story for my eldest son who, like me, loves anything supernatural.

I write anything and everything that comes to me, but young adult stories are my favourite. I get lost in the stories and I am usually as surprised as my readers by the end result.

My children’s stories were written for, and about, my youngest son. During the harder times in life, I have found that writing gives me a release from the stress and often, as with the Danny series, helps others to find a way around their problems.
My only hope is that those who read my work enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

The Enduring Appeal of Agatha Christie

(And one author’s obsession)

Agatha Christie once said, “People should be interested in books, not their authors.” But interest in both Agatha Christie and her books has now endured for a century.

Christie published her first book, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1920. What followed were 65 additional mystery novels, 14 collections of short stories, and one hundred years of the world’s fascination with the author.

Christie has sold more than 2 billion books worldwide, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. There are Facebook groups, blogs, even an iPhone app dedicated to the author and her books.

I read my first Agatha Christie novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, decades ago and was instantly hooked. After all these years, I’m still reading (and re-reading) her books. Every summer I read one I haven’t read before and re-read one of my favorites. This summer I re-read Death on the Nile in anticipation of the new film adaptation scheduled to be released in December.

Christie and her works have influence many of the best contemporary mystery writers. Authors such as Ruth Ware and Lucy Foley readily acknowledge Christie’s influence in their own writing. And with an endless number of mystery novels written since Christie’s career, her novels firmly remain classics of the genre.

When I decided to write my own mystery story, I picked out several of my favorite Christie novels, re-read and studied them. Her stories always include twists, turns and jaw-dropping conclusions. But they also delve into common human behaviors—fear, jealousy, revenge and greed.

Fast-paced and deceptively easy to read, her novels are sometime dismissed by critics as simple, her prose criticized as flat. But I agree with Nathaniel Hawthorne who famously quipped, “Easy reading is damned hard writing.”

How can anyone read and not thoroughly enjoy an Agatha Christie novel? It’s a mystery to me.

I am excited to be one of many tour hosts to share information about Now I See You by Shannon Work.

Elise Nicholson isn’t your ordinary witch. For one thing, she can light candles with a look, and she plays a mean guitar. Not only does Remy have to get to her first and keep the Dark away, but he also must convince Elise that he means her no harm—and that’s the easy part of the job. If he pulls this one off, he just might redeem himself the way every Watcher aches to do. But if he fails, both he and Elise might be better off dead . . .

Mindhealer (The Watchers Book 5) by Lilith Saintcrow ~ Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

“In the Watchers series, Saintcrow writes stories that are almost always nonstop action from beginning to end. Her women are kick-ass strong, her men ruggedly handsome and dedicated to the women they serve. It isn’t a bad combination at all.” —CJReading

The Witch:

The attacks are brutal, leaving the victims unconscious and broken. A powerful Mindhealer might be able to piece together what’s happening to these crushed bodies and shattered minds, so Caroline Robbins is pulled away from her relatively quiet life. A Mindhealer is incredibly vulnerable to the Dark—and Caro refuses even the idea of having a Watcher. She won’t have another man die in front of her, and that’s that. Unfortunately, the Watcher she just ran into has other ideas . . .

The Watcher:

Caro, the witch Merrick rescues from the dogs of the Dark, is obnoxiously stubborn, infuriating, and seemingly determined to throw herself into every dangerous situation possible. It’s enough to drive a man insane, and definitely enough to make a Watcher frustrated. How is he supposed to protect her, especially when she insists she doesn’t need a Watcher? But Caro is going to need all of Merrick’s skill and strength sooner than anyone guesses. The attacks haven’t stopped, and the closer Caro gets to solving the mystery, the more danger she’s in. Because she’s the next victim—unless Merrick can save her. And Merrick just might die in the line of fire if Caro can’t find a way to keep her Watcher safe.

Birth of the Fae ~ Locked Out of Heaven by Danielle M. Orsino

Destined to be a writer from a young age, Danielle M. Orsino was working as a nurse and treating a patient who needed some distraction during long I.V. treatment sessions. So, Orsino reached back to a forgotten skill, a childhood dream, Danielle had wanted to be a writer and so she decided to tell a story. Little did she know the seed would grow into a fantastically epic adventure of heartbreak, hope and rebirth — Birth of Fae: Locked Out of Heaven. Drawing from her passion for comic books, Cosplay and fantasy along with her expert martial arts expertise, Orsino brings forth an electric and hopeful debut.

Danielle is embarking on her biggest challenge to date: taking the story born from the long treatment sessions with a patient into a fantasy book series-Birth of the Fae: Locked out of Heaven. Expanding her love of writing, comics and exploring the world of fantasy novels, she delves into the realm of fairies and retells their origins from a completely new perspective.

Orsino has a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise science and is an LPN with a special interest in Lyme disease research. Orsino has been widely recognized from her influence and experience in martial arts realm, training for over 20 years and with over 500 tournament wins, and accumulating national and world titles. She has performed for former President of the United States Bill Clinton and has been featured on “Soap Talk, Fox Five news CBS, TLC and E! With this experience, she worked as a Fight Choreographer on “Wonder Woman: Balance of Power” and has worked with the likes of martial arts legend Vincent Lyn and WWE marvel and action star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Nothing Danielle ever does is simple, look at what NY times Bestselling author Clete Barrett Smith has to say about her debut endeavor: “After summoning this world into existence through an imaginative force of will, Danielle has scoured every inch of the landscape several times over. Critics often praise a story’s world building by saying that it feels “lived in.” Well, the world of the Fae certainly seems like that because Danielle herself has happily lived there for years as she worked to put all of this together…My favorite part of this story is that it is gloriously depicted in vibrant images.”

With no hope of returning to the Shining Kingdom, two groups of angels denounce their angelic lineage and develop into separate factions – the Court of Light, led by Queen Aurora, a former Virtue Angel, and the Court of Dark, ruled by King Jarvok, a former Power Brigade Angel. The two monarchs have opposing views on how to govern their kin, but the one belief they agree on is that human worship equals power.
Birth of the Fae: Locked Out of Heaven is an epic fantasy adventure of heartbreak, rebirth, and hope that examines the bonds of family, friendship, and love. It is a fantastic tale of good vs evil in a beautiful world, where the Light Fae and their potent elemental magick are tested by the raw power of the dragon riding Dark Fae warriors.

What really defines your time as writer?

Obviously the things you write, but take a step back, I think it’s not so much what you write as what inspired you before you knew you were going to be a writer. It’s easy to say this or that about an author after you have read their work or even for the author to discuss their piece. Me? I like to hear about their influences before it congealed. What did they grow up on? Those precious moments in the most informative years I believe set the stage. If the author had a vivid imagination as a child. Did they watch cartoons well into adulthood? Were they comic book readers or were they sci-fi junkies from a young age? You wouldn’t expect an author who wants to pen the next great literary classic to tell you they grew up watching Animaniacs and now own the entire collection. (I proudly admit it, Pinky and the Brain being a favorite.)

In the Fantasy genre the readers wants the author or as I like to refer to them “tour guide” to have a love and respect for the world they have built. The reader must trust the author. I believe this is where knowing a little more about the author and their qualifications comes into play. I’m not speaking on degrees; this is about influences and the love of the genre. A reader can tell within the first quarter of a book if the author loves a genre.

So I thought I would let you guys in on my background, besides the nursing and martial arts stuff. Here are my influences, this is what has carried me through and as an author colored my landscape…

Star Wars-The first movie I ever saw was “Star Wars” my parents took me to a drive-in when I was two years old and while I can’t tell you I remember seeing it in its entirety I can say they took me just about every Friday night for weeks and I fell asleep to the sounds of blasters, light sabers and Darth Vader’s breathing for the months. Star Wars pretty much became the metric by which all storytelling was measured. Good versus evil, it was clean and uncomplicated.

Disney– Mickey Mouse was the second staple in my house. My grandfather served with Walt and even drew with him. They remained friends and Walt offered him the first animation scholarship. My grandfather refused, not wanting to move his young family out to California. Disney is in my blood, once again the art of storytelling and building around a central villain is old school Disney princess perfection.

Wonder Woman– It gets complicated because I adore Gal Gadot’s movie version, but my heart belongs to Lynda Carter, with a nod to Cathy Lee Crosby because technically I saw her portrayal of the Amazon princess first. Either way Lynda Carter sent my 5 year old heart into over drive when she twirled on the screen exploding into fireworks of red, white and blue. She proved to me women could be superheroes and not play the damsels in distress waiting to be saved.

My first strong female protagonist and my love affair with comic books began. Through Wonder Woman I watched Batman and met Batgirl played by Yvonne Craig. A female who was a book smart librarian by day and motorcycle riding crime fighter by night, yup I was hooked. Now here I have to give a nod to Kato from the “Green Hornet” because watching Bruce Lee kick and punch his way onto the screen obviously left a mark on me. To me Kato was pretty damn cool, he got to drive (Robin never did) he never got captured (Robin always did) and Kato didn’t need a utility belt. He was perfection in my eyes.

The Muppets– The Muppets might seem odd but The Muppet show taught me about imagination and through them I learned to appreciate all that Jim Henson brought to the world of storytelling. From the “Dark Crystal” to “Labyrinth” Henson’s idea to push further was a key element I took with me. But most of all, to never lose touch with your imagination. I still watch the Muppets to this very day and find myself catching nuances I never noticed. Henson has a knack for nuance.

“In search of with Leonard Nimoy”– In search of with Leonard Nimoy” was on in the late seventies but repeated throughout the eighties and it hooked me as a kid. The show was all about unsolved mysteries and Cryptids. Cryptids are creatures not yet proven to exist like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster. I am still obsessed with Lake Monsters and have a news alert set for the Loch Ness monster. The show usually featured one, maybe two topics and went over the evidence screening eyewitness accounts. It was my first taste of the unsolved mystery machine and the idea there was more to this world.

Looney Toons Cartoons– What child of the 80’s did not grow up on Bugs Bunny? Daffy Duck’s sarcastic and pessimism still leaks into my mood. However, what I really grasped from these old school animated shorts was life is way too short to care what people think. Daffy Duck had an extra helping of self confidence which I am still trying to master, and Bugs’ humor when facing obstacles of insurmountable odds is another life skill I am attempting to utilize in my everyday life.

If you mixed all of these elements together, I believe you would get my world. It’s a little strange, a bit mysterious, nothing is as it seems, the women are all very self sufficient, imbued with a strong sense of justice and there is a lot of imagination. These factors; Henson, Nimoy, Wonder Woman, Lucas, Disney and that Crazy Wabbit heavily influence my writing. If you can relate, grab Birth of the Fae: Locked out on Heaven because we are going to have so much fun!

Bloodshed Academy by Jen L. Grey (plus a giveaway)

USA Today Bestselling Author

Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.

My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that’s what I’m inclined to write.

I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I’ve lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.

I’m extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes.
