Trouble on Main Street (Sugar Mountain Book 1)

A cozy mountain town, a sweet romance, and a secret society of sneaky women…

The sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand—the society itself is not secret—it’s the true nature of the group that is hush-hush.

Sugar Mountain is the kind of charming village that tourists adore. If you like small-town charm, quirky shops, and local art, this is the place for you. But when a blood smeared package shows up at the post office and it appears to be linked to a scheme that threatens Heidi Collinsworth’s historic home, the town takes on a sinister vibe. Heidi would lay odds that slimy Mayor Winslow is involved, but even with the enquiring skills of The Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society at work, proof is scarce.

The new guy in town, Adam Williams, is determined not to get involved in Sugar Mountain’s business. His last job in a big city planning office ruined his life, but Heidi needs his help. No matter how hard he tries to stay detached, Adam finds himself eyeball deep in Heidi’s problems, as well as the needs of her teenage son and a homeless dog.

With conflicting theories abound and tensions running high, it’s up to the ladies of the society to don disguises and go undercover. If they’re not careful, the town may fall to a wrecking ball, Heidi may fall for Adam, and the secret society will be exposed.

The Enduring Appeal of Agatha Christie

(And one author’s obsession)

Agatha Christie once said, “People should be interested in books, not their authors.” But interest in both Agatha Christie and her books has now endured for a century.

Christie published her first book, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1920. What followed were 65 additional mystery novels, 14 collections of short stories, and one hundred years of the world’s fascination with the author.

Christie has sold more than 2 billion books worldwide, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. There are Facebook groups, blogs, even an iPhone app dedicated to the author and her books.

I read my first Agatha Christie novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, decades ago and was instantly hooked. After all these years, I’m still reading (and re-reading) her books. Every summer I read one I haven’t read before and re-read one of my favorites. This summer I re-read Death on the Nile in anticipation of the new film adaptation scheduled to be released in December.

Christie and her works have influence many of the best contemporary mystery writers. Authors such as Ruth Ware and Lucy Foley readily acknowledge Christie’s influence in their own writing. And with an endless number of mystery novels written since Christie’s career, her novels firmly remain classics of the genre.

When I decided to write my own mystery story, I picked out several of my favorite Christie novels, re-read and studied them. Her stories always include twists, turns and jaw-dropping conclusions. But they also delve into common human behaviors—fear, jealousy, revenge and greed.

Fast-paced and deceptively easy to read, her novels are sometime dismissed by critics as simple, her prose criticized as flat. But I agree with Nathaniel Hawthorne who famously quipped, “Easy reading is damned hard writing.”

How can anyone read and not thoroughly enjoy an Agatha Christie novel? It’s a mystery to me.

I am excited to be one of many tour hosts to share information about Now I See You by Shannon Work.

T.J. Blake ~ Author Interview

Today I’d like to welcome T.J. Blake to my site. He says his friends call him Tom or Blake, I think I’ll stick with Blake. Blake is the author of Familiar a new paranormal mystery thriller!

First lets get to know you a little…

Obviously, we know you are an author, but some writers have other jobs as well. Do you have another occupation? Do you like what you do?

I do, I’m a content marketing specialist. I’m a Content Marketer at the UK’s leading online trade directory managing a team of writers. I also own a content marketing business called TJ Creative, and I’m currently working on a new app called TipSpend.

I really enjoy what I do. I’m able to merge my love for writing with marketing. Although my content writing is different to my fiction stories, there are a lot of similarities – there is still storytelling in everything I do. There’s a lot of psychology involved in what I do too, which is an element I really enjoy.

Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks, hard-covers or audio-books?

I prefer a physical book when reading. However, I love Kindle because instead of lugging around one physical copy, you’re holding fifty books in your e-book!

I have been producing an audiobook and listened to a couple too. I do like them, they’re great for if you’re on a long drive, whack on an audiobook.

What is your favorite film based on a book?

There’s too many to choose from; The Harry Potter films, Lord of The Rings, The Avengers (I think that counts!), any adapted Stephen King novel!

What book are you reading at the moment? And in what format?

Stephen King’s ‘The Institute’ is the next one on my list. I’ll be reading it on my Kindle.

Let’s shift somewhat and talk about your latest story.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 20 or fewer words, what would you say?

Familiar” is my new paranormal mystery thriller book.

To describe it in 20 words: a murder mystery with a paranormal twist. The Conjuring meets True Detective.

How did you come up with the title for “Familiar”?

The title relied on the story. Once you have read the book it should make sense. There’s more to the title than Arabella’s anniversary show being called “Familiar”.

Do you have a book trailer? If so, where can we watch it?

In your latest novel, who is the lead character and can you tell us a little about her?

Arabella is a famous psychic medium who communicates with those who exist only in memory. She has been speaking to her ‘friends’ for as long as she can remember. Arabella is committed to using her ability to help people connect once more by giving the deceased a voice.

Her ability and reputation has made it impossible to hold onto lasting relationships, but with those who no longer walk this earth, that’s not the case.

In the book, Arabella returns to where it all began fifteen-years before – on the very same stage. After an evening reconnecting loved ones and exposing untold stories, Arabella can’t help but wonder about the one unclaimed ‘friend’, and their cryptic message.

Arabella finds herself the subject of morning headlines and at the centre of Detective Barnes’ investigation.

What is your character’s greatest strengths?

Quite simply, she’s tough. She has to be. Communicating with spirits is not easy and it’s absolutely terrifying. Arabella doesn’t get a second to herself, but she reasons with her ‘friends’ and makes sure they have a chance to be heard.

Does your character have any weaknesses?

There’s a big weakness to Arabella… but I can’t tell you! You’ll have to read the book to find out.

Arabella has a habit for getting too close with her ‘friends’, but she must distance herself. All ‘friends’ want one thing, to feel alive again.

You’ll have to read to find out more!

Will readers like or dislike this character, and why?

I think readers will like Arabella, she’s kind and truly cares about people. But there is a hardness to her.

What first gave you the idea for your latest book?

It was the character Arabella who came to me first; strangely after having gone to see a live Derren Brown stage show.

It was a segment in Derren’s show that impressed me – he was outing psychic mediums and their ‘ability’. In fact, he was more convincing than any psychic medium I had ever seen. It was incredible. He revealed the most personal details about members of the audience. I was jealous – and I actually went up on stage to see if he could speak to my grandfather. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Derren’s work really inspired me. It made me consider all the things that could happen to a psychic medium – I had a lot of interesting thoughts, a lot of dark ones too.

The different scenarios that unfolded really excited me. I soon had a huge collection of situations that would create an interesting plot. I didn’t rush these ideas – I let them sit in my brain for a bit.

These ideas of mine loitered for a year I’d say. There was huge potential and a lot of different paths to explore.

One plot really stuck out to me. One that I thought, “now that would make an awesome Netflix show.” More like it would make another great T. J. Blake novel!

Let’s talk now about your writing process.

What is your writing style like? Are you a pantster or a plotter?

I’m a huge plotter. It’s all about the plot for me!

My aim is to create a world where you are entertained and trying to guess what’s going to happen. Most of the time, you won’t guess mwahaha!

What’s the best advice that you have been given when it comes to writing?

Show don’t tell!

What advice would you give someone who wants to start writing?

Keep going.

It’s tough writing a book, but actually it’s the editing and marketing that’s hardest. It’s quite draining, marketing your book; encouraging people to read your books. It takes time though, and you have to keep going.

For the living, it’s closure. For the departed, it’s the last chance to expose the truth.

For as long as she can remember, Arabella has communicated with those who exist only in memory.

Being the center of attention growing up was uncomfortable, and now, as a renowned psychic medium, it is becoming more of a struggle. Arabella’s ability and reputation always made it impossible to hold onto lasting relationships, but with those who no longer walk this earth, that’s not the case.

Arabella returns to where it all began fifteen-years before – on the very same stage. After an evening reconnecting loved ones and exposing untold stories, Arabella can’t help but wonder about the one unclaimed ‘friend’, and their cryptic message.

In an unexpected turn of events, Arabella finds herself the subject of morning headlines and at the centre of Detective Barnes’ investigation.

Can Arabella use her ability to prove her innocence and uncover the truth about the past?

Hide and Seek by Jo A. Hiestand

Books, Girl Scouts and music filled Jo A. Hiestand’s childhood. She discovered the magic of words and the worlds they create: mysteries, English medieval history, the natural world. She explored the joys of the outdoors through Girl Scout camping trips and summers as a canoeing instructor and camp counselor. Brought up on classical, big band and baroque music, she was groomed as a concert pianist until forsaking the piano for the harpsichord. She also plays guitar and has sung in a semi-professional folkgroup in the US and as a soloist in England.

This mixture formed the foundation for her writing. A true Anglophile, Jo wanted to create a mystery series that featured a British police detective who left the Force over an injustice and now investigates cold cases on his own. The result is the McLaren Mysteries, featuring ex-police detective Michael McLaren. Jo’s insistence for accuracy — from police methods and location layout to the general feel of the area — has driven her innumerable times to Derbyshire. These explorations and conferences with police friends provide the detail filling the books. She also writes the amateur sleuth Linn House Mysteries under the pen name Jessie McAlan. In 1999 Jo returned to Webster University to major in English. She graduated in 2001 with a BA degree and departmental honors.

She has employed her love of writing, board games and music in other ways by co-inventing a mystery-solving game, P.I.R.A.T.E.S., which uses maps, graphics, song lyrics, and other clues to lead the players to the lost treasure. Jo founded the Greater St. Louis Chapter of Sisters in Crime, serving as its first president. Besides her love of mysteries and early music, she also enjoys photography, reading, baking, and her backyard wildlife. Her cat, Tennyson, shares her St. Louis home.

Hide and Seek (The McLaren Mysteries Book 12) by Jo A. Hiestand ~ Genre: Mystery

Playing a mystery game seems the perfect way to celebrate Jamie Kydd’s promotion to Detective Sergeant rank. But the game turns real when a body turns up in the pretend crime scene. Perhaps worse than spoiling the party, the corpse is someone Jamie knows.

Even though the police take on the case, Jamie asks his friend, former police detective Michael McLaren, to also investigate—concerned that the victim’s criminal past may dampen the Constabulary’s usual fervor to nab his killer. It seems to have been a smart decision, for the police aren’t expending a lot of energy on the inquiry.

Suspects float around McLaren…half truthful, hard to find. More like wraiths than flesh and blood. If the victim’s burglary partner, ex-wife, or childhood friend didn’t kill Dan, who did? It’s a desperate game between McLaren and a killer who’s playing Hide and Seek.

Naming my Characters

By Debbie De Louise

For the most part, I name characters randomly and try to pick those that don’t carry any personal meaning for me. However, I’ve used names of people I know in some of my books including my new mystery, Memory Makers. But using real names doesn’t influence how I portray the characters. For instance, Lauren Phelps is the main character of Memory Makers. She volunteers for a clinical trial of a memory drug hoping that it will help her recall the face of the man who kidnapped her and her sister Patty twenty-five years ago. While she escaped her captor, Patty was killed. Lauren is 28 years old and nothing like my friend and fellow church member who shares the moniker except for the fact that they both like cats. I didn’t set out to use Lauren’s name for my main character, so it was purely a coincidence. Even more of a coincidence was that I chose Rick for the name of the kidnapping investigator who works with Lauren and serves as one of her love interests in the book. Rick is also the name of a friend from church and, no, he and Lauren are married to different people and aren’t similar in any manner to the fictional Lauren and Rick.

There was a person and two cats in the book that I named purposely. Florence, the dementia patient in the drug trial, was based on my mother who died two years ago and who suffered from that illness. I also dedicated the book to her. The Florence in Memory Makers has episodes where she imagines she’s in a classroom with other students. My mother also thought people in the nursing home where she was a resident were classmates of hers.

The two cats, Harry and Hermione, who are featured in a subplot of Memory Makers are named for my two, two-year-old cats, although they are portrayed as kittens in the book. Harry, who plays a bigger role by disappearing from Lauren’s mother’s house, is nicknamed Handsome Harry and is black like my male cat.

In previous books, I’ve also named characters for people I know. In A Stone’s Throw, the first book of my Cobble Cove cozy mystery series, Carol doesn’t play much of a role, but she’s included to pay homage to my mother-in-law who passed away shortly before the book was published. Another cat character, Floppy, was the namesake of my 15-year-old diabetic cat whose death spurred me to write Cloudy Rainbow, my first book, a paranormal romance with the theme of reincarnation.

I am excited to be one of many tour hosts sharing information about Memory Makers by Debbie De Louise.

What are your top 10 favorite books/authors?

Fly Away by Kristen Hannah, Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks, Misery by Stephen King, These Hidden Things, Before She was Found, and One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf, A Husband’s Secret and Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus, Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

What book do you think everyone should read?

Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky

How long have you been writing?

Fifteen years

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

As I write.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

I do lots of research, though it depends of the plot of the story. In Family Secrets ‘Secrets and Second Chances’ Book 1 was about breast cancer and the main character worked for NASA, so a lot of research was done to know her education and what she was about to go through with the cancer. Every book is different.

Do you see writing as a career?

I do and hope that one day I can make a living just writing. It’s like having coffee in the morning. I can’t function unless I write something each day.

What do you think about the current publishing market?

I wish there were more literary agents that could and would give us self-publishers a chance. Just because we self-publish our books doesn’t mean they are poorly written. I spend a great deal of money having all my books edited very well before I publish them. The book cover is very important to me as it is the first thing you see before picking up the book and reading the summary. I am one who based a book on its cover.

Do you read yourself and if so, what is your favorite genre?

I love to read books. I read every day. Mystery book and YA romance stories. Oh, and books based on real life events.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

Write in silence because I get lost inside my head and I can’t think with interruptions.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

One, usually, but if an idea comes to me, I will write it down.

If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Misery

Pen or typewriter or computer?

Computer

What made you want to become an author, and do you feel it was the right decision?

I love to write stories. Yes, I do believe it’s the right decision because only I can write the stories I’ve written.

A day in the life of the author?

I get up at 5 a.m., write until 7 a.m. get ready for work, leave the house at 7:20 a.m. Come home at 5 p.m. Shower, cook, watch some TV, read and go to bed around 9:30 p.m.

Advice you would give new authors?

Read and write as often as possible

What makes a good story?

The plot and characters

What are you currently reading?

The Upside of Falling by Alex Light

What is your writing process? For instance, do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I have a plot that comes to me and then start writing and let the rest come to me.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Not having enough time to write in a day.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I’m an original writer

If you could tell your younger writing self-anything, what would it be?

Start writing in high school. Take more creative writing classes

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

If the words are coming out of me, 6 months

It’s an exciting time in Sweet River, Texas, and the whole town’s talking. Maybe, a little too much. Former English professor Ainsley McGregor has gambled everything on her new business: Bless Your Art, an artisan market where local artists sell their wares and teach classes.

The bright, white space is filled to the brim with colorful art, yarn, jewelry, pet treats, antiques and even a few medieval weapons. Oh, and there are wine tastings. Everything’s better with wine. Ainsley is surprised by how well things are going–right up until the moment her Great Dane finds a dead body. With her friend accused of the murder, it’s up to Ainsley to find the real killer.

As the suspect list grows longer, Ainsley has her work cut out for her. The task is made more difficult by the fact her brother, the sheriff, doesn’t seem to want her help. If she doesn’t wrap up the case soon, she might be the next wine, um, one to die.

A Case for the Yarn Maker (Ainsley McGregor Book 2) by Candace Havens
Genre: Cozy Mystery

Spin a yarn…at your own risk.

Everyone at Bless Your Art in Sweet River, Texas, is excited about the Yarn Goddess (yes, that’s her real name) coming to town. Ainsley McGregor has set up a special event at the local community center, but when old Mrs. Whedon doesn’t see eye-to-eye with the Goddess about using quality yarn, a fight breaks out. Who knew the octogenarian had ninja moves like that?

It’s all fun and games until George Clooney, Ainsley’s Great Dane, finds Ms. Yarn’s dead body in a booth at Bless Your Art. Now the prime suspect is Mrs. Whedon, and while she’s not the easiest woman to get along with, there’s no way she’s the killer. At least, Ainsley doesn’t think so. As this yarn unravels, Ainsley and her quirky friends learn some interesting things about the case and the Goddess’s checkered past. But there’s a killer on the loose, and George may be the only thing protecting Ainsley from certain death.

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Deadly Legends

National Bestselling author Melissa Bourbon brings dark twists to two Latin-American urban legends guaranteed to keep you up into the wee hours. With riveting suspense, sigh-worthy romances with heart-stopping heroes, beautiful writing, and characters that jump off the page, these thrilling romantic suspense novels will have you believing in curses and ghosts.

For the first time, Silent Echoes and Silent Obsession are together in this boxed set. Get ready for a thrill-ride…

Silent Echoes

Something deadly waits in the shadows…

On a Texas night twelve years ago, Vic Vargas kissed Delaney West so deeply that she almost came apart. Later that same night, evil crept into Delaney’s room as she slept – and everything in their world fell apart. Now Vic is a rancher living a half-empty life punctuated by one-night stands and a strained relationship with his 11-year-old son.

Then Delaney returns to San Julio, and the past comes rushing back… along with the silent echoes of that night so long ago. Livestock are dying. Some say coyote, but others whisper another darker word. Chupacabra. Bloodsucker.

The past hasn’t disappeared – nor has the instinctive desire that snaps and crackles between Delaney and Vic. And as those emotions ignite, so does the evil that hibernated for the last twelve years. The evil that waited for Delaney to return to San Julio… and to Vic Vargas.

Silent Obsession

Johanna Rios is a woman whose past has come back to haunt her.

The ghost of la Llorona is said to haunt the riverbanks, always searching for her drowned child. She also haunts high school teacher Johanna Rios, whose own mother believed so deeply in the legend she tried to drown her daughters. And now the ghost has become real, a young woman murdered, and the safe world Jo created is falling apart.

Since returning home from his last tour of duty to become a school principal, Ray Vargas has fought his attraction for his employee, the sensual woman who’d once been the girl next door. But the Llorona Killer will not stop until he claims his final victim—Johanna—and Ray will do anything to protect the woman he’s come to love.

With a serial killer out to prove the curse is real, will Ray and Johanna’s future be drowned in the ghostly waters of the past? Or will the power of their love give them the strength to stop a killer…and heal their wounded hearts…?

Mysteries

Mysteries are close to my heart.  Truthfully, books of any kind are close to my heart, but mysteries, in particular.  The mystery can be large or small.  It can be the central focus of the story, or play a supporting role.  It really doesn’t matter to me the scope of the mystery elements, as long as it’s there in one way, shape, or form.

My love of mysteries started, like most young girls of a certain age, with Nancy Drew.  From there I graduated straight to Agatha Christie. I have a distinct memory of going with my mom to our town’s library so she could check out the last Hercule Poirot novel, Curtain.  She was crushed that it was to be Poirot’s last, and her love of these book intrigued me enough to start reading them.

I spent almost all of my high school lunches in one classroom or another reading.

Now, I should say that I’m a light-weight when it comes to these things. Horror movies and books are not for me. I threw Silence of the Lambs across the room once or twice while reading it, and I covered my eyes during certain parts of Dexter.

But I love the deduction.

So, of course, I when my passion for writing grew until it couldn’t be denied, it was no surprise that it manifested itself in the form of mysteries. I began with the Lola Cruz Mystery series. The bestselling A Magical Dressmaking Mystery is straight cozy mystery (small town dressmaking sleuth who happens upon murder in Bliss, Texas).  The Bread Shop mystery series is set in central coastal California.

And then there are my 2 romantic suspense novels (Silent Echoes and Silent Obsession—the boxed set is Deadly Legends), which, of course, have strong mystery elements in them. They’re based on Mexican legends and, to me, that’s a huge part of what makes them so interesting.  The legends themselves are like mysteries.  I had to research into the legends and I learned so much about chupacabra and la Llorona during the writing of both of these books, building the mysteries around them.  Fascinating stuff!

Mystery, mystery, mystery. The characters. The communities. The crime. The puzzle.  The deductions. The justice. Add in a romance, and you have one satisfying read.
