AMAZON DESCRIPTION:
Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Yet she spares Cas’s life.

The Critical Points:
This book has been sitting on my shelf for a while now. I’m not really sure why I hadn’t read it before now. I’ve loved the cover since it was given to me but just never felt compelled to read it. I’m so glad that I finally did. A couple weeks ago, I was in the mood for ghost stories, which is why I started reading 20th Century Ghosts. Well, when that one left me feeling less than excited, I decided to pick up Anna Dressed In Blood which promised a ghost dressed in Blood. I was crossing my fingers that I wouldn’t be let down again.

WRITING: Kendare Blake has a very easy, fluid writing style. Anna Dressed in Blood was a fast read that left very few questions unanswered. It is full of adventure, awkward teens, death, and although it’s not a love story, that’s in there too.

STORY: Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story…
Actually, there is nothing average about this story. It’s a fun coming of age Young Adult story of a teenage ghost hunter who finally finds his tribe.

CHARACTERS: Every character, at least the important ones, are fleshed out to the point where you feel like you know them. Blake has a beautiful way of bringing unlikely friends together and making it feel completely natural. You care for Cas, Thomas, and Carmel and when things don’t go their way, it hurts. Sure, there are some untimely deaths (I won’t tell you who or how), but in a ghost hunting story, there has to be… Don’t worry, she kills the right characters.

APPEARANCE: I wish I knew who designed the cover, but unfortunately it isn’t written on the copywrite page. The cover, which shows Anna standing outside of her Victorian home, is actually foreshadowing what happens in the book. It is beautiful, whimsical, and romantic and perfectly portrays the feel of the story that Blake has created.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE:
I had a hard time coming up with a favorite quote from this one. Let me explain, typically, I find my favorite quote(s) while I’m reading. Something will just hit me and I’ll love it and either highlight it or write it down. But, with Anna Dressed In Blood, I was so engrossed in the story that I didn’t think about the fact that I needed to find my favorite quote. I was lost in the world Blake had created. Trust me, that’s a very good thing.

So, I had to go back… thumb through the pages to see if I could find a quote that stood out. Of course, I did.

“Until a few weeks ago, none of this was real.”

It’s a simple little quote, and seemingly means nothing without the context of what was around it. However, I like it because its true for any book of fiction you pick up. None of it is real… yet if it is written well, it feels so real. The characters feel like they have come to life on the pages and it is sad and painful when you have to let them go at the end of the story.

OK, one more favorite quote… just for fun:

“But hey, at least we’ll have this strange story to tell, love and death and blood and daddy-issues. And holy crap, I’m a psychiatrist’s wet dream.”

INSIDE THE COVER:
First let me start by saying that I had my hand in this book as well. Although I am not one of the authors, I did help them through the process. This group of amazing teen authors took their stories from concept to publication, a task that many would love to achieve. I am beyond proud of all five of them and am so honored that I was able to go on this journey with them. It is there first published work and I am looking forward to seeing how the grow as authors from this to the next.

WRITING: I won’t discuss each of the stories or authors separately, but what I will say is that they are developing authors who are learning to express themselves through their unique voices. There is true talent in these pages and I have a feeling this is not the last we will hear from them.

STORIES: This collection contained 5 short stories as you will see below.

The Spark, by Lilly Brown
During the brutal war over the Flame throne, a prophecy was delivered forever changing the lives of Elyse, James, Beth, Dan, and Reese. Even as children they were charged with the responsibilities of being named the Prophecy Warriors. Now, eleven years later, the prophecy has come to bare truth and these noble five must fight to save their country before it is ripped apart at the seams. Not all will survive, but if they can band together long enough to fulfill their birthright then their losses will not be in vain.

The Peculiar Case of Matthias Chase, by Bethany Martin
MATTHIAS CHASE, a small-town Golden Boy, has been missing for three days. With little evidence and no leads, the local detectives are getting nowhere. However, Aiden Altoviti, who recently graduated in Matthias’s class, has become quite invested in the case. With the help of his best friend, Bexley Craig, they uncover some strange details that tie Matthias’ disappearance to cases long in the past.

Unexplainable events continue to happen to Aiden and Bexley, causing them to believe there is so much more to the case than meets the eye. With unknown forces working against them, the teens find fiction and reality blurring together. Aiden and Bexley quickly piece things together, but Matthias’s time is running out. Perhaps Aiden and Bexley can get there in time to save Matthias. However, fate might have other plans for him.

There is Love in War, by Jordan E. Lasater
Have you ever loved someone so desperately but knew in your heart you couldn’t be with them? Love in War is a crazy tale full of werewolves, griffons, Gods, and Goddesses. Two star crossed lovers, Luna and Cyrus, try to make a life together, only to be pulled worlds apart. Surrounded by death and war, their souls get torn apart life after life. Is trying even worth it? After all he is just a boy and she is just a girl. Or are they?

The Trials of Gebhuza, by Brenton Porter
Amerellius and Amy are just two ordinary citizens serving the empire and living a normal life. That all changes when the emperor comes to town. After a failed attempt to take the emperor’s life, the Gebhuza, an elite force, is tasked with protecting the emperor and his empire from any and all threats. The time to put that force to use comes sooner than expected when trouble brews within the kingdom’s borders. Can Amerellius and Amy lead the Gebhuza and save the kingdom from utter desolation or will it fall in flames?

Years in a Blink, by Bearcina
Billions of Lightyears away, something- or someone- may just be screaming out in the endless depth of space, and you just can’t hear it.

A war raged across a lone little planet called Rainmia, and caught in the middle of it was a Betta named Artemia. She yearned for vengeance on a planet to be long forgotten in the eternity of time. Now, the Betta is much older, with her own laboratory that hosts the Universe’s best technology and brightest minds. Princess Persephone happens to get caught up in this mess right alongside Artemia.

Just remember, no one can hear you scream.

CHARACTERS: Again, not going to dive into each of the stories, but considering these are all short stories, I believe the authors did a beautiful job of giving us back story and just enough character development to care.

APPEARANCE: The cover, which was designed by Contagious Covers, is beautiful, whimsical, and draws you in before you even turn it over to read the back. Within the pages of the anthology, each story has its own cover as well. These interior story covers were created by Amanda Orneck with input from the authors themselves. I believe she did a wonderful job capturing the feel of each story.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:
“You’ve proven you can beat is alone, but we were trained to fight together. How can you stand against two of us?” ~ Reese in The Spark

“Yeah, I’m great. I absolutely love getting thrown against trees, this is the highlight of my day.” ~ Bexley in The Peculiar Case of Matthias Chase

“That’s very generous of you, but I’m giving you one last chance to hand her over – and I promise to make it quick when I kill all of your men.” ~ Princess Luna in There is Love in War

“If there is any more knocking, the door might just break.” ~ Amerellius in Trials of Gebhuza

“Panther, listen, that’s not going to reverse the sulfuric poisoning. I don’t care what kinds of miracle medicine she so called, needs; she can’t wake up, or she’ll die.” ~ Riddley in Years in a Blink

Author Interview – Kat Schuessler

Today, I’d like to welcome Kat Schuessler, Ohio author of Think of Me, to my blog. I hope this interview sparks some interest and leads you to your next great read.

Alright, lets jump right into the Q&A and find out what Kat is willing to share about her life and her writing process.
author picture

Obviously, we know you are an author, but some writers have other jobs as well. Do you have another occupation? Do you believe you’re any good at it? Do you like what you do?

Aside from writing, I also work as a counter attendant at a local restaurant, which just means that I answer the phones, make pizza dough, and handle pick-up orders. I do like it, but it isn’t a life-long career. I do think I’m good at my job but there have been jobs that I was better at.

What is your family like?

I have a very large family. My parents got divorced when I was eleven, and a year later my dad remarried, so I have the extended families of three parents behind me. In my immediate family, I have my parents, my step-mom, two sisters, two step-brothers, and countless nieces and nephews. I also have a fiancé and a beautiful eighteen-month-old daughter.

Congratulations on the upcoming wedding and of course your daughter. I’m a mom too and I truly believe children are a blessing and a wonderful source for creativity. If it doesn’t bother you, can you let us know what your childhood home looked like?

When I was younger, I lived in a house near Lakewood, OH. Back then I didn’t understand what a beautiful house it was and how lucky I was, I just knew that it was dirty. Nobody in our house liked to clean except my dad, and he was heavily outnumbered, so the house was never really clean. Now, looking back, I wish we had kept it cleaner so that my sisters and I could have appreciated it.

Do you have any hobbies, other than writing? What do you enjoy doing?

I love to play the flute. I’ve been playing since the fourth grade, and I wish high school could have lasted forever so I never would have had to leave marching band. I also love to read, crochet, and binge-watch shows on Netflix – especially “Gilmore girls”!

What is your greatest dream?

My greatest dream changes constantly. When I was a little girl, my dream was to publish a book. That’s happened. After that, my dream was to have a beautiful little girl, and then that happened. Another smaller dream that came true was to be a contestant on the Food Network show, Worst Cooks in America, which I never thought would happen in a million years, but it did. Now my dream is to work somewhere where I can make some decent money without sacrificing too much of who I am, and that isn’t fast food; I’ve worked in too many fast food joints in my lifetime.

OK, wow… I love the show Worst Cooks in America. The fact that you were a contestant is so cool to me.

It does seem that your goals and dreams change frequently as you reach them. Congratulations for that. So, what kind of person do you want you could be?

The person I would like to be is kind, loving, generous, and patient, but still a badass, not afraid of offending somebody if it means being myself. I don’t go out of my way to hurt anybody and if I do, I feel horrible, unless they deserved it; karma is real. I think I succeed in being that person, apart from the fact that I tend to speak without thinking, which leads to a lot of people being offended when offense was not my intention.

Not to pry too much, but do you remember your first love?

I remember all of my loves. They have each made a massive impact on me, whether negative or positive, and I wouldn’t go back and erase any of them because they made me who I am.

I love that answer. Our past does form us and not wanting to go back and erase any of your past loves says a lot about you and how you feel about where you are in life. Lets switch gears for a bit. Can you tell me about the most terrible thing that ever happened to you?

I have to say that I have been lucky, because nothing truly “terrible” has ever happened to me. I’ve had some pretty severe asthma attacks and there were complications after I had my daughter, but because they turned out okay I don’t count them as tragedies. If I had to say anything, it would be the fact that I was suicidal for a very long time, and if not for my family and close friends, that time would have defeated me and I would not be here right now.

You seem to have a great outlook and to be able to look back on what has happened to you and recognize that they aren’t “terrible” because you were able to get through them is a blessing. Many people would see those as setbacks, or allow them to define them, but you seem stronger than that. Its very inspiring. Speaking of inspiration, what or who inspired you to start writing? And how long have you been writing?

I was inspired to start writing when I read “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling. It took me somewhere I had never been, and I wanted to create that magic for somebody. That was when I was eight years old. I think I started really writing regularly about two years later, so I’ve been writing since I was ten.

What was your dream growing up? Did you achieve that dream? If so, in what ways was it not what you expected? If you never achieved the dream, why not?

Well, as I said earlier, my dream was to write and publish a book, and obviously I achieved that dream. As for whether or not it was what I expected, I have to say not at all. I didn’t expect that all of the big publishing companies would require an agent, and that by the time I got to this age, traditional publishing would be a dying art. I think that was the most shocking for me, the idea that now anybody can write and self-publish a book without it being a big deal unless there are a lot of sales. I also thought that once my book got published, I would see it on bookshelves, but even traditional publishers only release books online these days, so that dream is starting to seem unlikely.

As an Indie-Author myself, I can relate. I have seven published novels and three workbooks available on Amazon. Like most authors, I dream of having my books on a shelf at a brick and mortar bookstore, but sadly as bookstores close it seems that dream gets farther and farther away. Lets go to something a bit more positive, who is your role model?

Oh, gosh. This is hard, but I have to say my dad. He is the kindest, most patient parent I could have asked for and he has always been there to catch me when I fell. It didn’t matter if I was upset over something as trivial as a break-up or something as major as feeling like I didn’t want to live anymore, Dad has always known exactly what to say and do to make me feel okay again.

My father, and mother, are my greatest role models too. So, I can relate. What is your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is anything happening to my daughter. I have literally had nightmares about her being hurt or killed and I’ve had several panic attacks afterward, and I couldn’t be calmed until I held her in my arms and could feel her breathing.

I think most, if not all, parents can relate to that fear. We can’t protect our children from everything, but we sure as hell try. Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks, hard-covers or audio-books?

I prefer paperbacks, for sure, with hard-covers in a close second. Besides the fact that they don’t rely on batteries, I just feel smarter when I’m reading a physical book. They are also easier for me to read because I tend to miss a lot when reading books on a screen. As for audio-books, I don’t have the attention span for them. I tend to space out and miss half of the story.

Have you ever read a book more than once? And if so what was it?

I have read several books more than once. There are way too many to list, but some of my favorites are the Harry Potter series, “It” by Stephen King (actually, a lot of Stephen King’s books), the entire “Immortals After Dark” series by Kresley Cole, “Gone With the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell, and “Anne of Green Gables” by L.M Montgomery.

You are a girl after my own heart, you had me at “It”. What is your opinion of novellas?

If they’re written well, I am fine with it. The length of the story isn’t what matters to me; what matters is the content. If you compare “The Stand” by Stephen King and “Penpal” by Dathan Auerbach, the lengths are vastly different but they both make my hair stand on end, and I believe that is the ultimate goal.

Have you ever read a book just based on its cover?

When I first saw “A Hunger Like No Other” by Kresley Cole, the cover was just so alluring that I knew I had to read it. That led to my obsession with her series, “Immortals After Dark” and actually what led me to start writing erotica.

You have me intrigued… I may have to check out “Immortals After Dark” as I have never read it. What is your favorite film based on a book?

This is an impossible choice. From “Gone With the Wind” and “Anna Karenina” to “Phantom of the Opera” and the “Harry Potter” films, Hollywood has done so many amazing adaptations that picking a favorite would take forever.

What is your favorite book genre at the moment?

I’m really hooked on horror books at the moment. I’ve been re-reading Stephen King a lot, and that’s going to take me a while considering how many of his books I have.

What books have made it onto your wish list recently? And why?

I’ve really wanted to get my hands on Stephen King’s new book, “The Outsider” and Michelle Obama’s autobiography “Becoming,” even though autobiographies usually aren’t my thing. I also got unexpectedly excited when I heard that E.L. James will be writing a new book.

YES, YES, YES!!! “The Outsider” is on my list as well. What book are you reading at the moment? And in what format?

At the moment I am reading the paperback version of Stephen King’s “Needful Things” for the… fifth time?

“Needful Things” is probably one of my favorite Stephen King novels, but I haven’t read it in years. I just might need to pick that one up again. There is just something about the old Stephen King novels that call to me. If you could invite any four (4) celebrities (alive or dead) to your dinner party, who would you invite and why?

Seth Rogan, Kathy Bates, Meryl Streep, and Whoopi Goldberg.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 20 or fewer words, what would you say?

My latest work is called “Think of Me”. It’s about a single dad who gets set up by his friends to meet a woman, and his past puts them both in danger.

That sounds interesting… now I need to know what he is hiding in his past. So, if “Think of Me” part of a series?

It is the second book in my “Point of No Return” series. The first book is called “No Backward Glances”.

think of me-frontAnd now I have two new books on my ‘To Read’ list. How did you come up with the cover? Who designed the cover of your book(s)?

Jennifer Stevens designed both of my covers. She just told me where to find good stock photos and told me to find a photo I liked, and she magically turned it into a gorgeous cover.

Did you listen to any particular songs while writing your book(s)?

I listened to a large span of music genres, but I mostly listened to “Dream Theater”. All of their music served as beautiful background music to my writing process. More of the bands that I listened to are listed on the acknowledgements page of my books.

How did you come up with the title for your book(s)?

I was obsessed with “Phantom of the Opera” for a long time, and my absolute favorite song in the musical is “The Point of No Return,” so there was my series title. One of the lines in the song is “No Backward Glances” and it really struck a chord with me. It really fit the theme of my first book, which generally dealt with not looking back and embracing the future while living with the past. As for the second book, I wanted to keep the POTO theme, and another great song was “Think of Me,” so I went with that.

Do you have a book trailer? If so, where can we watch it?

I don’t unfortunately. I have no idea how to make one or where you would even send that. I’m horrible at self promotion.

You know, as an indie-author, self promotion is the hardest part for me too. I think a lot of us are in that boat, which is why it is so hard to go from random indie-author to Best Seller! In your latest novel, who is the lead character and can you tell us a little about him/her?

There are two lead characters, but I guess the main one would be Josh. He’s a single father to a four year old girl. His wife just mentally snapped one day and attacked him and their daughter. They survived and she got locked up, but she escapes and goes after Josh and his new girlfriend, Rita, who is the other lead character.

What is your character’s greatest strengths?

Strength. Everybody in this book, even the “villain,” has some form of strength and determination pushing them through.

And what are his/her greatest weaknesses?

His greatest weakness isn’t even really a weakness; it’s just a symptom of his past. The attack caused him to have severe post traumatic stress disorder, and it makes it difficult for him to be away from his daughter for any real amount of time.

What are some of his/her favorite foods?

His favorite is Italian food, but he loves pretty much all international cuisine.

What’s a positive quality that your character is unaware that he or she has?

He doesn’t know how charming he is, despite the fact that he is told all the time. He doesn’t try to be a charmer, he just thinks he’s being polite.

Will readers like or dislike this character, and why?

I think they’ll like how strong he is, and how willing he is to lay down his life for the people he loves.

What first gave you the idea for your latest book?

I was reading Stephen King’s book, “On Writing,” and one of the writing exercises was to write a story where a wife attacks a husband or something, and when I first wrote the short story I thought it would be cool to take that one small idea and expand it into a novel.

What is your writing style like? Are you a pantster or a plotter?

I am a hard core pantser. The only kind of planning that I do is making character profiles and keeping an updated timeline, and that doesn’t even get made in advance. I make it as I go to make sure that my time is accurate.

I love this. I fall somewhere between pantster and plotter, so I’m always interested in how other authors work. Have you come across any specific challenges in writing or publishing? What would you do differently the next time?

I would say that the biggest challenge is what I mentioned in an earlier response, the fact that traditional brick-and-mortar publishers are dying out, with the exception of the huge names that require an agent. Plus, also as I said earlier, when I was younger publishing a book was a huge deal, and only great writers could say that they did it. These days, anybody could write whatever they want and have it self published online, and I feel like that makes it less impressive if you don’t have a wide audience.

I believe I already know the answer to this, but are you a self-published/Indie author or did you publish through a traditional publishing company?

I am self-published through Amazon. I did originally find a traditional publisher, but they unfortunately shut down about a year after “No Backward Glances” came out.

If you’re a self-published/Indie author what made you go that route instead of the traditional publishing route?

The owner of my first publishing company, Jennifer Stevens, walked all of us through the process of self-publishing on KDP and CreateSpace until we found another publisher, and I was never able to. After years of writer’s block and discouragement, I decided that if I couldn’t find a traditional publisher, I would just learn how to do it myself. Jenn was a huge help in teaching me how to format, making me a kick ass cover, and giving me more advice than I could ever ask for. I couldn’t have done it without her and I am extremely grateful.

What’s the best advice that you have been given when it comes to writing?

For the love of god, EDIT! Just re-read your book over and over, because you never know when you’re going to see a typo that you missed the first three times. If possible, put your book aside for a couple of weeks and come back to it with fresh eyes; that will reveal the most mistakes.

Amen!!! I couldn’t agree more. Editing is SO IMPORTANT. We indie-authors get a bad reputation when readers find editing issues, not even if they are in our books. Indie-Authors tend to get lumped into one pot and if there are editing issues in one author’s books then there must be editing issues in all indie-authors’ books. It isn’t true, but readers often believe it. So, edit your book both personally, through beta readers, and hire a professional editor!!!

Alright, now that I am done with my little editing rant, where can your readers follow you? Please list links to any applicable websites and/or social media accounts.

THE CRITICAL POINTS
I’ll be honest, when I started reading this short story anthology, I had a hard time getting into it. Many of the stories were more science fiction or horror rather than what I typically consider a ghost story.

WRITING: Hill is a powerful writer, there is no denying it, with an active imagination. His visuals are often spot on in a very disturbing way.

STORY: This collection contained 15 short stories… I’m not going to lie, I didn’t enjoy them all. There was very little character development and the formatting from story to story was not consistent. So, I will take the time to focus on the few that I did enjoy.

20th Century Ghost
The Rosebud Theatre is an old-style movie palace, haunted by the semi-legendary spirit of a young woman. The girl died during a screening of The Wizard of Oz, appears infrequently throughout the Twentieth Century, and occasionally starts conversations with a select few moviegoers. The story is told by Alec Sheldon, the theatre owner, who worries about his approaching mortality and what will happen to the Rosebud after he retires.

  • My Thoughts: The ending was way to abrupt, and not at all where I felt the story was going or should have gone. However, I enjoyed the journey. I wanted more of the young girl, but was given less of the “ghost” and more of the old man running the theatre.

The Black Phone
Thirteen-year-old John Finney is kidnapped by a man named Al. Trapped in a basement room, the boy’s only hope may lie in a mysterious disconnected black phone hanging on the basement wall. The phone rings at night with the whispers of the kidnapper’s previous (and now dead) victims.

  • My Thoughts: As a mom, this story is my worst fear. The fear of one of my children being abducted is something I have had nightmares about since becoming pregnant with my first child. Hill captures the emotion of the experience perfectly, makes you feel, smell, even taste was is happening to the young boy. It killed me not to be able to reach into the book and protect him. I wont give away the ending, but it was one of the few stories where I felt somewhat satisfied as a reader… although, not completely.

Last Breath
The story concerns Dr. Allinger, an old man who runs a “Museum of Silence” which contains the last breaths of various people, some being famous figures such as Edgar Allan Poe.

  • My Thoughts: This is a simple story with a hint of a creepiness factor, but nothing solid to point to. The characters are simple, and relatable. It is one of the shorter stories in the collection, but it makes you wonder about life and death in a way that none of the other stories do.

CHARACTERS: Again, not a lot of character development. Although there were characters throughout the collection that I enjoyed and rooted for, there wasn’t one in every story. Hill’s writing didn’t make me love the characters. In fact, more often than not, I despised the characters or feared the fact that somewhere out in the world there were people really like them. With that said, I think Hill accomplished exactly what he was setting out to do.

APPEARANCE: The cover portrays bugs, which won’t make sense until you read You Will Hear the Locust Sing. I have to say; this story was one of my least favorites. Probably because it was, in a word, gross.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:

ELEVATION by Stephen King

elevation

TITLE: Elevation
AUTHOR: Stephen King

RATING OVERVIEW
Writing: ★★★★
Story: ★★★★
Characters: ★★★★
Appearance: ★★★★
Overall: ★★★★ (4)

AMAZON DESCRIPTION:
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The latest from legendary master storyteller Stephen King, a riveting, extraordinarily eerie, and moving story about a man whose mysterious affliction brings a small town together—a timely, upbeat tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences.

Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis.

In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face–including his own—he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

From Stephen King, our “most precious renewable resource, like Shakespeare in the malleability of his work” (The Guardian), Elevation is an antidote to our divisive culture, as gloriously joyful (with a twinge of deep sadness) as “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

THE CRITICAL POINTS
The cover says ‘ELEVATION a novel” but it really isn’t a novel. At only 146 pages, small pages at that, I’m guessing ELEVATION can’t be 50,000 words. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d say it’s probably a novella. I read one review that called it a short story, and for Stephen King it is, but in reality its more than that.

WRITING: It’s Stephen King, so the writing is spot on.

STORY: Elevation takes ordinary people and puts them in an impossible situation. So basically, its your typical King story. I loved that there were two main stories going on here, the first being the communities lack of acceptance of the new lesbian couple that moved to town, and the second being Scott Carey’s inexplainable weight loss. At first glance it doesn’t seem that these two stories make sense together, but in the end everything comes together.

There wasn’t a lot of backstory. We don’t find out what brought Missy and Deirdre to town other than the affordable restaurant space. We don’t find out what causes Scott’s drastic weight loss. We don’t even find out what happens after everything comes to a head and he loses those final pounds, not really anyway. What we do find out, and the message behind this story, is how a single act of kindness can change everything. I won’t go into more details, if you want to know what I mean… read the book.

CHARACTERS: There are four main characters, with a few smaller characters sprinkled throughout. Again, not a lot of backstory and even less character development. Yet, somehow, it works for this book. As readers, we come into the lives of these characters for only a brief moment. We are the proverbial fly on the wall. It’s a very voyeuristic reading experience and at times you feel guilty for watching, but by the end you care for the characters you know so little about and, if you’re like me, you just might cry.

APPEARANCE: The cover is beautiful, but you won’t understand it until the end.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:
“Not a wind, not even a high, exactly, but an elevation. A sense that you had gone beyond yourself and could go farther still.”

“Gravity is the anchor that pulls us down into our graves.”

THE CRITICAL POINTS
I was bound to read The Darkest Legacy at some point. I LOVED the first four books in the series and was just waiting to get through a stack of other “to read” books on my desk before I cracked the spine on this one… also, I didn’t read much in November since I was busy with NaNoWriMo. With that said, let’s get into the book…

WRITING: There is no doubt that Bracken is a talented writer. She has an amazingly creative mind and she is successful at painting a picture with her words. With that said, I think that this books felt a bit rushed… not as much detail… in some spots and too much mundane detail in other spots.

STORY: I had a hard time accepting that the final book in the series was from a completely different perspective. The story didn’t seem to have a really driving force. Zu is a speaker for the government, there is a staged bombing set up by who knows who, Zu goes on the run with two completely new to the reader characters and along the way discovers that Ruby and Liam are missing. Zu’s focus becomes finding Ruby and Liam… even though they haven’t been in the book at all. MORE HERE

It was around page 300 that I started caring about what was going to happen in the book, but not until the last six or seven chapters that the book really started to have the same feel as the previous books in the series. It was those last few chapters that pulled at my mind, tugged at my heart-strings, and made me remember exactly why I loved the series and why I’ll probably pick up anything Alexandra Bracken writes just to see what she comes up with next. No, it wasn’t my favorite of her books, but read it for the ending… I wasn’t disappointed and I don’t think you will be either.

CHARACTERS: I’m not going to lie, I missed the interaction between the main characters within the previous books on this series. It was hard to get into reading from Zu’s perspective at first and I didn’t really feel anything toward Zu, Priyanka, or Roman at first. It wasn’t until about 300 pages in that I actually started caring for the characters, what was going to happen to them, or how their story would end. That isn’t to say that Bracken didn’t do a good job with character development, she did. I just think there could have been more relationship development to make the reader really invested in the characters more.

APPEARANCE: Like the other books in The Darkest Mind series, I think this one is beautifully done. I wish she had kept with a similar style, but seeing as she changed voices from Ruby’s perspective to that of Suzume “Zu”, I suppose a change in look was needed as well. It isn’t my favorite of the covers, but it gets the job done. Even if I hadn’t already intended to read it, I would have picked it up at the books store and at a minimum checked out the back blurb.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:
“I was still on my feet. There was still breath in my lungs. I wasn’t fine, but I was strong. And I was going to use every ounce of my power to get us the hell out of here.”

“I’m going to remind you that heroes frequently die, but the morally mediocre people almost always live to see another day. Don’t do anything that’s going to piss me off.” ~ Priyanka

The Children of Lot by Vic Kerry

Children of Lot

TITLE: The Children of Lot
AUTHOR: Vic Kerry

RATING OVERVIEW
Writing: ★★★
Story: ★★★★
Characters: ★★★★
Appearance: ★★★
Overall: ★★★ (3.5)

AMAZON DESCRIPTION:
Life as a middle school principal can be humdrum, and so was the case for Suzanne Clay. Every day it was the same thing, filling out detention slips and dealing with fist fights between boys and the cliquishness among prepubescent girls.

Everything changed when she met the Children of Lot and got caught up in their strange prophecy.

Along with Suzanne, the special education teacher and a handful of students find themselves locked in a potentially deadly and mind-altering encounter with the Children of Lot.

It is an encounter that will test everything within Suzanne just to survive and get her students out of harm’s way. At every step, a new danger rears its horrible head, and she battles wits with the sly and crafty leader of the cult, who will stop at nothing to make sure God smiles on his people.

THE CRITICAL POINTS
Let me start by saying that I purchased this book from an author event where I got to meet and discuss the story with the actual author. He explained it as a horror story dealing with a cult. Intriguing, right? I thought so too. After reading it, I wouldn’t classify it as horror, it wasn’t scary – at least not to me – but it does deal with the gruesome details of a cult.

WRITING: The Children of Lot was Vic Kerry’s debut novel and although he has some wonderfully developed characters, the novel is riddled with editing issues and typos. This did not dissuade me from finished the story, but I know that there are many readers out there that would have put the book down after the first chapter. I only point this out because if you like cult stories, I want you to keep reading. Don’t give up just because of some typos and missed words.

Although this book wasn’t really my cup of tea, and I did find it to be a bit predictable, I will say that Kerry has created a solid story. There are no plot holes – he resolves every issue you can come up with – and his character development is perfect. You can picture each character and you know what their life was like before the book and even imagine what it will become long after the story within the books pages.

STORY: The Children of Lot takes place in the deep Alabama south, and tells the story of the Hassle family – A CULT – as they try to fulfil the scriptures found in the Book of Lot (a new book of the bible that their ancestors wrote). I won’t give anything away, you’ll have to read the book to find out what the Book of Lot says, but trust me you won’t find anything like it in the bible at church.

APPEARANCE: The cover shows a red barn off in the distance and a hanging dead pig in the forefront. It is gruesome, but it does relate perfectly to the story held within its pages. It isn’t a book I would have picked up if I had passed it in the book store, but I’m glad I stuck with it and read the full story.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE: I don’t have one with this book.

THE CRITICAL POINTS

WRITING: I have enjoyed Veronica Roth’s writing style with this series, however it changed in book 3. Books one and two were told from Tris’ point of view, which I LOVED. Book 3 however, jumps back and forth between Tris and Four… it was jarring and seemed out-of-place for the series.

STORY: I love the idea of this story and the trilogy is very good, especially books one and two. However, book three seemed repetitive, not with the other books but with itself. Jumping back and forth from Tris’ perspective and Four’s perspective led to reading the same information multiple times with a slight change in thought. It felt like Roth was pushing us toward the end of the story instead of letting us just come along for the ride.

The ending was a giveaway, I guessed it early and wasn’t to pleased. Not only because I like a good surprise, but because it seemed like the predictable choice.

I read each of the first two books in two or three sittings, but book three seemed to drag. It took me much longer, almost a full week, to read because I just didn’t feel as invested in the story. I love a good story line that pulls me into the action, character development, and relationships, but after a while of listening to Tris and Four go head to head with their back and forth love you – don’t trust you – love you – don’t trust you… I found myself disconnecting.

The last thing I will say is this… Not every story has a happy ending, and I’m ok with that, but this one builds you up to the hope and real possibility of a happy ending, just to let you down in the end.

Still, it is a good story and a must-read trilogy! If you’ve read it, I’d love to know your thoughts, so comment below and tell me what you thought of Allegiant or the whole Divergent series.

Next week, I’ll be reviewing Four, book 4 in the Divergent series.

APPEARANCE: The cover is a swirl of water… a wave. The symbolism is there… in one of Tris’ fears, but could be easily lost in the content of the book. Although appealing, I don’t know that the cover of this one connects to the story as well as the covers on books one and two.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:

“I wonder if fears ever really go away, or if they just lose their power over us.”

“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever loved, for the sake of something greater. But sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it is nothing more than gritting your teeth through pain, and the work of every day, the slow walk toward a better life. That is the sort of bravery I must have now.”

THE CRITICAL POINTS

WRITING: Veronica Roth is a true YA author, and one I can stamp as mom approved. Insurgent, like Divergent has no swearing or sexual content. I think the most heated it got was a kiss or two between Tris and her boyfriend. There is a LOT of fighting and action, but nothing overtly ‘adult’ to the point where young readers couldn’t enjoy it. If this series is within their reading level, I say by all 4 books and watch them dive into the world Roth created!

STORY: I can’t say enough how much I am enjoying this series. It is a teenage coming-of-age adventure with a post-apocalyptic dystopian twist. The characters get more and more intriguing with each chapter and the dystopian world that Roth has created is scary and exciting all at once.

In the first book we watched Beatrice and the others be ‘tested’ to see which of the factions they best fit into; Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor, or Amity. We watch as families are torn apart and lives are changed forever. Then, in Insurgent, we get to see how Beatrice, now known as Tris, blends with her newly claimed family, how her life changes, and how her views on the world change.

I don’t have to have a love story to enjoy a book, but I will say that the building relationship between Tris and Tobias (Four) was one I really enjoyed.

I could give you more… but, I don’t want to. I want you to read the story for yourself and tell me what you think! If you’ve already read it, please comment below and tell me what you thought. Next week, I’ll be talking about Allegiant – book 3 in the Divergent series.

APPEARANCE: I LOVE this cover! The tree, spinning in the wind, reminds me of the tree of life. Seeing as Tris is coming into herself, discovering who she is and what she believes in throughout this book; the symbolism of the tree of life is perfect.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:
“I am his, and he is mine, and it has been that way all along.”

“People, I have discovered, are layers and layers of secrets. You believe you know them, that you understand them, but their motives are always hidden from you, buried in their own hearts. You will never know them, but sometimes you decide to trust them.”
