An Interview with Author Sarah Biglow

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Hi, I’m Sarah Biglow and I’m a USA Today Bestselling author. I write primarily urban fantasy and cozy mystery. I dabble in paranormal romance, although admittedly most of my romance tends to be on the lighter side (as in it’s there but it’s not always the focal point). I have been publishing since 2015 and am so grateful to be on this journey with my amazing co-author Molly Zenk. We’ve been friends for over a decade and have been writing together for the last two years.

In terms of how I became an author, I was originally published by a small press in 2012 but when the publisher shut its doors, I made the decision to self-publish and have been on that journey ever since. I will say I’ve learned a lot in the last two years when I really started to take my career seriously. I’ve had to adjust my goals and expectations over time, but I think I’m really starting to get the hang of this author thing! I hope you’ll think about coming on this wild ride with me by following me on social media and diving into some of my books.

How do you find time to write as a parent?

Have I found time to write as a parent? It’s still a work in progress with an almost eighteen-month-old. I do my best to get up early and write before I have to start work (I have a full-time day job, too) and when he goes to bed sometimes I’ll try to write then. On weekends, I do my best to take advantage of nap time, but let’s be real, that doesn’t always happen either. Sometimes, mama just needs a nap herself! But it really has become much more of a balancing act/spinning plate scenario since the little guy came along.

Which of your novels can you imagine being made into a movie?

I can absolutely see my Seasons of Magic (urban fantasy) series being made into a movie. I’ve actually talked about my dream cast on the series Facebook fan page. I think in particular it would be fascinating to see how the visual effects department would adapt and show the way magic is used in that universe. But I could also see Hunted being made into a trilogy of shorter films (there are two more books coming soon). It’s got action, romance, mystery, drama and a unique premise that I think would lend itself to a visual medium. I could also see both of my current cozy mystery series being maybe short-run special event miniseries for TV. Like the Hallmark channel or something fun and light like that.

Can you tell us a little about the characters in Hunted?

Hunted follows Darren and Edith, two people on opposing sides of a centuries-long conflict who are more connected than they realize when they first meet. Edith has been a vampire for 100 years after the death of her fiancé during World War I. And Darren is driven by revenge against all vampires because vampires killed his parents. There are other supporting characters like Edith’s adopted daughters and Darren’s younger brother who round out the cast and provide a lot of innocence and some much-needed comic relief. But they are also people dealing with grief and loss as well as identity, position in society and what it means to love your fellow man.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I loved building the world and the backstory for this series with my co-author Molly Zenk. It was our first foray into co-writing and we just had a blast coming up wit the rules for our vampires (they can only turn seven people with that person’s verbal consent before they turn to dust). I really enjoyed the social justice aspect of the story as well. Our vampires exist out in the open, but they are treated as second class citizens after losing the Civil War. They’ve been subjugated to government land (similar to the Native tribes in reality) and forced to take government benefits. So, it was really ripe for something big to kick off and I think we did a good job of showing that despite surface differences, they are all people.

I’m happy to be one of many tour hosts sharing information about Hunted by Sarah Biglow and Molly Zenk.

Of Spells and Fur by Valerie Evans ~ Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

As the only known survivor of a horrific massacre years earlier, Molly Hastings has rebuilt her life as a dedicated member of the Anberlin sentries. It’s her job to protect and police the supernatural citizens who call the town home, but the discovery of several bodies has put everyone on edge with no suspect in sight.

Further complicating matters are a call from the home she left behind and the sudden arrival of a werewolf motorcycle club with ties to her past. An unexpected ally is found with Parker Hayes, a hunter facing down his own demons and searching for a future not based in bloodshed, who inspires feelings she hasn’t felt in years.

Amidst the clash between her past and present, Molly finds herself questioning everything she knows about not only those she’s meant to protct but the Sentries themselves. Could everything she’s been taught be a lie, and if it is, can she protect those she cares about?

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m actually currently working on a 5-part series involving a side character from Of Spells and Fur with the first book scheduled to be released summer 2021. Without spoiling the events of the book, this character comes from a single-species town and left his family over a decade earlier following some traumatic experiences. His decision to return home forces him to face not only the family he abandonded, but the woman whose heart he broke.

The other four books will focus on his siblings dealing with their own species-based issues and meeting significant others.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I’ve always loved writing and have several short stories my mother has kept over the years. Of Spells and Fur is actually my fourth published work, though the world of Anberlin where Of Spells and Fur is set began taking shape in 2012 with the book that would become Kindred Spirit. Following a conversation with my sister in January of 2020, I took the plunge to self-publish the original Anberlin trilogy over the first half of the year while working on Of Spells and Fur. It still feels surreal sometimes, but I’m excited to continue on this journey and introduce more people to my worlds.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Of Spells and Fur?

Molly Hastings was born into a family of supernatural hunters, but she walked away after a tragedy and became the equivalent of a supernatural police officer called a sentry in Anberlin. She’s known for being somewhat stand-offish, work obsessed, and anti-werewolves, though it’s a limited group who know anything about her past beyond the hunter part.

Parker Hayes was also born into a family of supernatural hunters, though he made some questionable choices and got himself disowned. He wants to join the Sentries, but his habits of drinking, getting into fights, and causing trouble around town don’t exactly make him an ideal candidate.

What is your writing process?

I have a somewhat chaotic writing process since I start with an idea that includes characters, antagonists, and the basic outline of a plot. I always write the first chapter freehand to see where the flow is and get a feel for the main character, but I generally outline events that come to me and can span anywhere from a single chapter to several. Then it’s just a matter of rinse and repeat! Sometimes random scenes pop in my head so I’ll write them out then have to figure out where they belong later on.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story, or do you feel like you have hte reigns of the story?

I normally feel in control, but Molly did a little hijacking with Of Spells and Fur. I had a plan then she went, “but what if . . .” and I ended up loving the direction things went. It ended up giving me extra work and having to scrap some scenes that I’d originally written, but I do feel like the story is stronger and more character-focused with the change.

Do you read yourself and if so what if your favorite genre?

I try to read whenever possible, but I admit that I don’t always get to read as much as I’d like. My favorite genre is the urban/contemporary/modern fantasy genre because I love seeing magic and the paranormal world brought into the regular world.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

I am a full believer in writer’s block, but I also think it’s important to not let it be an excuse. When writer’s block strikes, I throw myself into creating playlists or graphics to reawaken that excitement for the story and hear the characters’ voices again. It’s almost always successful, and usually when it isn’t, I realize there’s a structural or plot problem that needs to be address before I can keep going with the story.

Advice they would give to new authors?

Write the story you want to read. It might not always be the most current or in-demand story, but I think it’s more important to be passionate about what you’re writing than going with what you think will sell or get the most readers. Someone’s waiting for your story so why disappoint them by turning out what everyone else is doing?

The sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand—the society itself is not secret—it’s the true nature of the group that is hush-hush.

Sugar Mountain is the kind of charming village that tourists adore. If you like small-town charm, quirky shops, and local art, this is the place for you. But when a blood smeared package shows up at the post office and it appears to be linked to a scheme that threatens Heidi Collinsworth’s historic home, the town takes on a sinister vibe. Heidi would lay odds that slimy Mayor Winslow is involved, but even with the enquiring skills of The Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society at work, proof is scarce.

The new guy in town, Adam Williams, is determined not to get involved in Sugar Mountain’s business. His last job in a big city planning office ruined his life, but Heidi needs his help. No matter how hard he tries to stay detached, Adam finds himself eyeball deep in Heidi’s problems, as well as the needs of her teenage son and a homeless dog.

With conflicting theories abound and tensions running high, it’s up to the ladies of the society to don disguises and go undercover. If they’re not careful, the town may fall to a wrecking ball, Heidi may fall for Adam, and the secret society will be exposed.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Happy to. I started reading romance early in high school and started writing what has become

e known as fan fiction shortly after. The rest of my friends in school outgrew it, but I never did. In fact, my education faltered rather spectacularly because I was either reading or writing romance. It took me a lot of years to find my way, but I published my first novella with Harlequin in 2014 (CHRISTMAS ACTUALLY anthology). Since then I’ve published light romantic suspense with Berkley (and since self-published those books as The Nemesis Files), the Butterfly Harbor series and The Blackwells with Harlequin Heartwarming, and The Honor Bound series with Harlequin Romantic Suspense. I’ve also published some paranormal romance with ARC Manor and Heart’s Kiss Magazine.

I call myself a kitchen sink romance author. I write a little bit of everything. I’m not super spicy with my heat level. I like to think my books would appeal to a wide-range of romance readers. I love writing community focused books; family and friends connecting and popping up in other stories. That’s the fun bit about writing for me.

What inspired you to write this book?

This book, GUARDING HIS MIDNIGHT WITNESS, was inspired by the Hitchcock movie Rear Window and the classic noir/gothic movie Gaslight. I wanted to write a story about a witness to a crime—who might not have witnessed anything. Greta Renault, my heroine, has an interesting and complicated (and somewhat devastating) backstory. She’s quirky (or as some in the book call her “kooky”). She’s definitely different. I equate her to a human Dory. She’s just flitting from one thing to the next and sometimes just stops talking in the middle of a sentence because she gets easily distracted. But when it comes to proving what she believes she saw, she doesn’t have a choice.

Enter Detective Jack McTavish, who has a habit of playing the White Knight despite never having gotten the princess.  He’s been a secondary character in previous books and finally he has his own story The sparks between him and Greta are instant and, I think, this is one of the most realistic relationships I’ve actually written so far. I love creating stories that twist and turn and you’re never quite sure where it’s going, or who the bad guy is. I hope it’s as much fun for the reader to read as it is for me when I write them.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

For the most part, the characters are from my imagination. My villains tend to be people in my life who have ticked me off (or have hurt people I care about). So…yeah. I can think of one paranormal hero, whose story I haven’t written yet, who is definitely modeled after a certain aquatic super hero, but…he’s waiting in the wings.

Pen or typewriter or computer?

Computer for sure and when I get stuck, I turn to longhand and paper and pen. I would LOVE to use a typewriter again. IN fact, that’s one of my goals, to start a typewriter collection. I just love how they sound! But the computer is so much easier and faster for me. I type almost 90 words a minute and my hands can’t move that fast when I’m writing. That said, longhand scribbling tends to help me when I get stuck.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver readers what they want?

I try to do both, actually. My goal is always to put a spin on something familiar. Like with Jack McTavish in GUARDING HIS MIDNIGHT WITNESS, he’s one of those good guys who just keeps striking out. Not necessarily because of anything he does or doesn’t do, but because something just isn’t right between him and his current paramour. I wanted to explore that a little, to dive into the male psyche. We see that a lot with heroines in not being able to land the right guy, but for this one, I flipped it. So yeah, my goal is usually to try to flip something about the story or the expectations on its head.

I’m excited to be one of many tour hosts sharing information on Guarding His Midnight Witness by Anna J. Stewart!

Have you written any other books that are not published?

No. However I wrote two memoir for Masters degree. One on criminal law in France Ancient Regime and also, The Iconography of the femme fatale in the art of John William Waterhouse. Express Pursuit is my first venture in fiction.

If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?

Amber, clove, damask rose, pink pepper, jasmine and gardenia. PS: Why am I so specific with this answer? It’s because I started, a few years ago, to create perfumes as a hobby after taking a perfume class in Grass, in the south of France. I have my own little lab at home! Twilight of Kaizerin Sissi, my creation is my favourite fragrance.

What did you edit out of this book?

The prologue and the epilogue. The prologue was a slow scene which ended up compressed as a quick flashback in an early chapter. Chapter 1 needed to start with a bang and give a more active tone to the story.  I also took out the epilogue. As one often say, better quit while you’re ahead but you can read the epilogue in my Website, Newsletter 12. Spoiler alert.

In the middle of the lawn sat a giant pink flamingo pool float, with throw blankets tossed over the top of it and pillows piled on. The pool float was made so that the body of the flamingo was two inner tube-like holes with a giant head poking straight up into the air. Beside the inflatable sat two clear plastic cups, and even from here I could see it was filled with something blue.

“I had to go to three different stores to find blue-raspberry. Every place had either cherry or cola. Apparently not everyone is as crazy about blue-raspberry as you.”

I stared at the giant pool float, utterly stupefied. “Why?”

She thinks she’s kissing Jeremy, the totally hot basketball player she’s been crushing on. And the kiss…it’s amazing. Heart-stopping, world-changing, toe-curling. The kiss makes her forget about her overbearing mother, the next-door neighbor’s drama, and the probability that she’ll fail her senior year. The best kiss of her life makes all that fall away.

Until her blindfold falls off, and she realizes that instead of kissing her crush, she’s kissing Elijah, her best friend since third grade.

Though she manages to convince Elijah that he was kissing his girlfriend, Remi can’t get the thought of his lips on hers out of her head. As things between them grow more and more complicated—because it turns out her fantasizing about his mouth is more of a problem than it sounds—Remi has to make a choice: does she live the rest of her life loving her best friend in secret? Or does she tell the truth and risk ruining their friendship forever?

Heart-melting and romantic, What Are Friends For? is a swoon-worthy best-friends-to-lovers story that will leave you crushing hard.

What is your favorite scene in What Are Friends For?

There are so many scenes in WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR? that just make me smile when I think of them. So many that I think about from time to time and just grin like a fool. Which is an awesome thing, because I was so afraid I’d never want to go back and look at anything I published—ever again. There’s that constant fear of finding something that you want to go back and fix, right? But this scene? This scene I will love until the end of time.

Without giving too much away, it’s the inciting incident. Between Chapter Four and Chapter Five, I swoon every time. I don’t think there’s ever been a time that I reread that scene and I didn’t squeal a little. Hands down, my favorite scene. If you want to see it, you’ve got to go check it out. *wink*

But as for a scene I can talk about—there’s a scene between Remi and Elijah where they’re looking at each other. Remi is lost in her thoughts about how amazing of a guy Eli is—totally unaware she’s totally staring and he’s totally staring—and just when you think something is about to happen, Elijah laughs. “You blinked,” he says. “I win.”

While Remi was in her own la-la land about him, he thought they were playing a staring contest. I. Love. It.

There were times between us that felt totally normal—like, almost the entire time we’d been cutting out snowflakes, things had felt normal. I hadn’t been staring at his mouth or imagining his body heat enveloping me into a hug. We joked like normal, laughed like normal. But the quiet moments between us had my heart aching, wanting.
“See you tomorrow,” Elijah said, and I saw from the corner of my eye the shadow of him rising to his feet. He pressed his hand once against the spot between my shoulder blades before walking off, his socks silent on the wooden floors. I counted each of my breaths as I waited for the sound of the door to open.

It took seven slow inhales and exhales and then Elijah was gone, leaving me with a torrent of thoughts and a hurting heart.
