The Innocence Series Book 1
by Harper Reynolds
Genre: Contemporary Romance

When they first meet, sparks fly…but not the romantic kind…

Ella Westhoff is a marketing genius. But romance? Not her strong suit. So, while she’s prepared to return to her small hometown and help her grandmother successfully reopen her B&B, she will not fall for the grumpy landscaper on the job—the one who so thoroughly annoyed her at first sight. That was the plan, anyway…

Cooper Daniels isn’t cut out for love, either. His bitter divorce certainly taught him that. One-night stands are all he’s willing to commit to these days. Which means that even though he enjoys bantering with the brilliant Ella, he knows he can’t be the kind of guy she deserves. No matter how much she makes him wish he could be…

Somewhere between fresh starts and past hurts, business and pleasure, Ella and Cooper might be able to claim a happily ever after. But only if they’re willing to cross some lines along the way…

Lines We Shouldn’t Cross, book 1 in the Innocence series, is a sweet and spicy, emotional contemporary romance. Download today and get ready to fall for Ella and Cooper.

I write the kind of romance novels that blend sweet and spicy into something deliciously real – stories that’ll warm your heart one minute and make you reach for a fan the next. My characters are flawed souls who stumble their way to love with enough emotional baggage to fill a cargo plane, but they’re worth every messy moment.

Life handed me my own romance novel when I fell for an American military man while living in Germany. Now I’m living my happily-ever-after in a cozy Kentucky town, where my European roots tangle perfectly with Southern charm. You’ll find me powered by excessive amounts of coffee, testing ice cream flavors (strictly for research purposes), and soaking up cuddles from my golden retrievers, Dakota and Tucker.

Betrayed! Banished! Broken! Can Luther’s love for Amelia survive?

The Forgotten
The Realms of Darkness Book 1
by KA Stefana
Genre: Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

My name is Luther Van Leer, and I’m a prisoner in the vampire queen’s castle. She’ll let me out if I’m willing to meet her demands, but I will refuse until she puts a stake through my heart. I’ll not let her turn me into a monster. At least, that was my plan. With a turning kiss, I was turned into a monster, banished, beaten, and betrayed. Now, my master expects that I will fall in love with her and play nice. If my cold-dark heart ever finds her, revenge will be mine!

Step into the dark and feudal world of the four kingdoms. The prophecy hangs over the land, turning kings and queens against each other. When Amelia turns Luther, she unknowingly drags him into her world. Instead of gaining a lover, she gains another enemy. Will Luther forgive her ultimate betrayal and help her survive, or will he abandon her? It would be his right.

From the darkness of the salt mines, the horrors of the bird cages, the temptations of the Forbidden Lake, and dragon tattoos, Luther and Amelia will be in a race against time to save their kingdom.

This is book 1 in the Realms of Darkness Series.

This book was first published on Amazon’s Kindle Vella.

Welcome Readers! I am so excited that you are taking this journey with me into the Shadowvere, where my characters live. I love to weave tales of darkness and light, pushing my characters to the end of themselves. How will they react? Some may fall into evil, spiraling into a never-ending vortex of darkness. Others may walk the line between the realms of darkness and light. Only a few will rise above the chaos. They are the defenders and heroes in the world of shadows, but they, too, wrestle with the shadows surrounding them, trying to lure them down dark alleyways and into the back rooms of iniquity.
My friends always ask me where my tales come from. I guess it comes from years of reading great tales from the likes of Tolkien, Lewis, and so many others. In reality, I don’t have a clue. The stories somehow flow from the unruly characters that beg to be written yet refuse to follow their storylines. Just the way I like it!
Past the shadows, you will find twist of romance between kings and outcasts, enemies to lovers and everything in between.
As for me, I started my writing journey during quarantine and haven’t stopped writing since. I am thankful for the writing community and their support and for my family and friends. Most of all, I am blessed to have a husband who supports all of my late-night shenanigans, wrestling with characters and pounding away at the keyboard until the wee hours of the morning.
~ A million hugs! Thanks for joining the Shadowverse.

Secrets, demons, lovers and murder…
Who can you trust?

In the Dark
The Cities Below Book 1
by Jen Colly
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Fate will not be denied.
Faith should be crowned “Queen of the Wrong Place and Wrong Time.” Her impulsive, solo trip to Paris seems like a genius idea – until she loses her way back to the hotel. In the rain. At night. When the two men she flags down for directions shove her into the nearest alley, she fears the worst.
Soren was irritable. Not surprising as he’d held off feeding as long as possible. The thought of feeding from someone he knew turned his stomach, and so he ventured above to become just another body in the chaos of Paris. But when the cries of a female in distress reach his ears, everything inside him demands he protect her, and he is unable to hide the true nature of his species.
Soren has no choice but to keep her and bring her to his underground city. It doesn’t take him long to realize why he’d been drawn to Paris, to that street, that alley…Faith. She is the other half of his soul. Admitting the truth to her could damage the fragile connection they built, but when an old enemy, lurking in the dark attacks, they are separated. Now, he may never have the chance.

Bound
The Cities Below Book 2

His heart belongs to one woman, his life to another.
Keir didn’t exist. Not anymore. The Lady of Galbraith had saved him from death. Forever indebted to her alone, Keir had become her confidant, her spy, her assassin. He was her secret weapon against those trying to remove her from power. When Keir is ambushed by a pack of demons, he used the last of his strength to return home and warn the Lady of impending danger.
To say she was stunned when a dying man fell to her feet, was an understatement. For the first time in her life, Cleo acted on instinct and without hesitation – their lives now undeniably bound together. Her single act of benevolence left her reeling, confronted with the knowledge that a stranger had more care and consideration for her well-being than her own family.
Political upheaval is sweeping through the city of Galbraith, splitting alliances and stoking discord. When Cleo is abducted, taken in retaliation from the side she’s chosen, only Keir can get her back. And he will, even if he must start a war.

Beneath the Night
The Cities Below Book 3

Demons are not the only enemy among them…
Waking from a seven year healing sleep should have been the biggest shock of Navarre’s night. It was not. The brave female standing before him was, without a doubt, his fated mate. That wasn’t the stunner either. She’d been sent here to feed him, to bring him back and restore his strength, risking her life to save his. Still, not yet the biggest surprise. What had Navarre reeling was her red hair. She was decidedly not his kind.
Cat had responsibilities. Five, to be exact. The children in her care were not hers, but she would do anything to protect them, and that meant staying in Balinese. The evidence of her mixed species was something she could not hide. As this city belonged to Navarre, only he has the authority to allow her to stay. Cat willingly faces her greatest fear, and with it, her past.
Beneath the night, a dark plot unfolds, and Navarre finds himself in danger of losing not only Cat, but his entire city.

Sheltered
The Cities Below Book 4

When the enemy is your mind, there is no escape.
Bette feared the city, and for good reason. Valenna had become corrupt, targeting citizens with any substantial amount of wealth or power to their name. Her self-imposed solitary confinement caused her to lose track of time, and her sanity. She could no longer live this way. Only three solutions existed: allow Valenna to dictate her fate, die in the sun, or flee to the fabled city of peace. Bette ran.
Rollin was a Guardian. His job defined his life, the man he’d become, and his core beliefs. Everything he did was in service to the city of Balinese and the citizens within. When a terrified female crashed into his arms, begging for help, he did not hesitate. Everyone and everything seemed to frighten her, except Rollin. He took her home, and once safe under his protection, she began to flourish.
Problem was, in her plea for sanctuary, she claimed a demon chased her toward Balinese, but none had been found. His affection for her grows rapidly, as does his concern over her lie. Then, the arrival of a demon forces Rollin to question his beliefs, his place among the royal family, and the motives of the woman he so lovingly sheltered.

The Guardian
The Cities Below Book 5

Prepared to die…fighting to live.

Savard was in a mood to die, but when a human insists on saving his life, death is no longer an immediate option. He knew of no species – human, vampire, or demon – that could see him while in his invisible Spirit form. Unique to this world, this woman’s singularity was a danger to the entire vampire race.

Waking behind bars in an underground vampire city was not how Sera envisioned her night drive ending. She has come to expect nothing from those who pass through her life, but this man, dying on the side of the road, proves to be different. Savard fights to free her from tyrannical vampire laws and to hide her unique abilities. What Sera doesn’t understand, is why he would fight his growing love for her.

Savard’s haunted past threatens to tear them apart. Soon, Sera discovers just how far her guardian is willing to go, and what he’s willing to do, to keep her safe.

Night Stalker
The Cities Below Book 6

He had every intention of crossing a line.
In all honesty, Jake had to give his trip to Paris mixed reviews. Beaten and broken by seemingly invincible men with eerie red eyes marked the low point, but abduction by a sexy, knife-wielding vampire? Better than fireworks on the Fourth of July. She was the best medicine for a wounded man’s body and soul. A few busted ribs cost him precious time, but he had to keep moving. Call it vengeance or justice, either way, Jake had a man to kill.
Dulcina had witnessed the destruction left in the wake of demons for far too many years to be rattled by a bloody body. She brought him home and catered to his comfort. Big mistake. The smart-mouth, irritatingly likable man pulled through, and was determined to leave, but with knowledge of other species in his head, the human is a problem.
To stop Jake from escaping, Dulcina promised to help him finish his mission, but the price was steep, and neither were prepared for what they discovered. Secrets are uncovered, and as a Night Stalker charged with protecting all species, Dulcina is forced to make a difficult choice.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?

I’m likely a different breed when it comes to name picking. I tend to start with a vivid scene in my mind’s eye. Once I write that scene down, whether it’s two paragraphs or two pages, I can’t keep going without names. Names are part of a personality, and if it doesn’t fit, I can’t ‘see’ the character. The name Dulcina literally means sweet. On the surface, she’s not at all sweet. She fights being feminine at every turn, and while she is not at all fluff and pastels, at her core Dulcina is caring, compassionate, and a very sultry female. Feminine and sweet are absolutely a part of her, and she guards herself, but has a way of bringing that side out in her.

Jake Martin. I had his last name before his first name, which is wild because it’s not used much. I could hear Officer Martin in my head. For his first name I needed something short, to the point, with a hint of a joking personality. Jake. Only a Jake would be able to roll with the punches and handle Dulcina because, well, she punches.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

The surprises! Every time I push forward and write the next book in this series, I’m surprised. Either by how the hero/heroine respond to pressure and each other, or the shock of something unexpected being thrown into the plot line. In Night Stalker I found a demon who, at least as far as I can tell, is a good guy. It feels weird. I like it.

Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?

When it comes down to it, both Dulcina and Jake were originally driven by seeking vengeance for the loss of someone they loved. Demons killed Dulcina’s family. She left her home and ventured above ground, feeling the need to kill demons before hey had a chance to kill others. As often happens when you leave the nest and take on life by yourself, you’re hit with reality, and your perspective is altered. Though we don’t see it first hand, Dulcina has already been through her crucible. Her views on demons have shifted. What we do see, are the changes in her compared to previous books.

Jake is hunting the man who killed his best friend on the SWAT unit. The pain of her loss is new and raw, and when he sees the possibility of justice slipping away, he takes matters into his own hands. He had nothing left to lose, and going after a killer who skipped the country seemed like the right decision at the time.

How did you come up with the title of your first novel?

My first… In the Dark is a beautiful piece of groundwork set for the rest of the series. Vampires, being the creatures they are, can only survive in the dark of night. Therefore, they live underground in vast cities they’ve built and expanded over the centuries far away from the sunlight. When a human enters their underground city, she realizes she’s been ‘in the dark’ about the existence of this species. Then the vampires discover they’ve been ‘in the dark’ about an enemy thought long defeated, living among them, waiting for the right moment to attack.

Who designed your book covers?

My Hubby! Now that I have the rights back to the first four books, I’m doing a huge series relaunch. That includes revamped (pun intended) covers! Hubby is also my beta-reader, so he knows these characters and the vibe you feel when immersed in these stories.

Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I learn something new with each book. Each drives the next to an extent, and sudden epiphanies about certain characters, cities, or events come to light the deeper I dive into this series. In Night Stalker I learned a demon Enforcer is hiding among vampires in Paris!

What are you passionate about these days?
I’m super passionate about my books. It’s literally the best career I’ve ever had. The hardest I’ve ever had running my own business, but so rewarding. I wake up wanting to do the work. I’ve also been setting aside time to read books for enjoyment, something I haven’t done consistently in a long time.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
To unwind I usually go into my kindle reader or my bookshelf and pick a book that I don’t have to edit or concentrate too much on. I let myself just enjoy the story.
Also, just this year I finally learned how to crochet. It was something I’d been wanting to learn for a very long time, and it was great to see the tiger take shape. I’m hoping to move on to blankets soon.

How to find time to write as a parent?
For most of the time, I feel like I have no time to write because my brain can’t calm down enough to concentrate. I know lots of authors write in the early morning before everyone gets out of bed, but I’m not a morning person. I’ve found the best times for me are after the kids go to bed, and sometimes it’s on my phone while I’m standing in line or sitting in the car waiting for a sporting practice to end. Lately, I’ve been trying out 5-20 minute chunks. That way it doesn’t seem too overwhelming. Every little bit helps even if it’s a hundred words every day.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I finished the rough draft of my very first book.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
A wolf 😊

The Writing Process for Aspiring Urban Fantasy and Dystopian Authors

Starting your journey as a writer, especially in the genres of urban fantasy and dystopian fiction, can feel daunting. The world of speculative fiction is vast and intricate, but with the right tools and mindset, you can navigate the writing process and find your unique voice. Here, I’ll break down how I approach writing my novels and offer advice to help you create immersive worlds and compelling narratives.

1. The Seed of an Idea: World-Building

In urban fantasy and dystopian novels, world-building is at the heart of the story. You’re crafting more than just a plot; you’re designing an entire universe that feels rich and believable. At least, that is the goal. Here’s how I approach it:

Urban Fantasy:

In urban fantasy, the world you create often coexists with our own. It’s an alternate version of reality where magic, mythical creatures, or supernatural elements blend seamlessly with modern society. When I begin, I think about the following:

  • What is hidden beneath the surface? Perhaps a secret society of witches exists in the heart of a bustling city or small town, or supernatural beings roam the streets undetected by the humans they interact with. Consider how these elements influence daily life—how does the magical world interact with, or hide from, the mundane world?
  • Setting details matter. You don’t need to describe every brick of a city, but small, evocative details—like a shadowy alley, an underground speakeasy, or a half-lit park—can make your world feel alive. Think about how things look, smell, sound, and feel…

Dystopian Fiction:

Dystopia often presents a future world that has collapsed or become a grim version of what we know. When crafting your dystopian world, ask yourself:

  • What went wrong? What event, ideology, or technology changed the course of human history? It could be climate change, a totalitarian regime, a technological collapse, a medical epidemic, or something else entirely. How does this history affect the everyday lives of your characters?
  • What’s at stake? In dystopian worlds, there’s always something at risk—freedom, survival, or the future itself. The rules of your world should be clearly defined, whether it’s rigid class structures, environmental decay, or the technological surveillance state.
  • Sensory detail is key. In a world on the brink of collapse, smells, sounds, and visuals can intensify the atmosphere—whether it’s the acrid scent of pollution or the eerie silence of a deserted city.

2. Developing Characters: The Heart of the Story

Characters in urban fantasy and dystopian fiction, like in most novels, are not just participants in a story—they’re shaped by the world around them. However, in these genres, I believe characters should also be a reflection of the world they inhabit.

  • The Reluctant Hero. Urban fantasy protagonists often start as ordinary people who are thrust into extraordinary circumstances. The appeal of this character type is that they’re accessible and relatable. They may be confused, overwhelmed, or even cynical about the magical world they are now part of. Developing this character arc, as they grow into their role, provides a satisfying emotional journey for the reader. Alee Moyer, from Awaken (Book 1 in the Blood Angel Series) is a perfect example of this.
  • Flaws and Strengths. In dystopian fiction, characters often face immense challenges. They might rebel against oppressive systems, survive in a harsh world, or try to reclaim something lost. These characters need both deep flaws and strengths. A rebellious protagonist might be stubborn and impulsive, while someone seeking justice might struggle with a sense of hopelessness. These internal conflicts are key to their development and drive the narrative forward. Check out my SECTOR C series!
  • Secondary Characters. Supporting characters, from sidekicks to antagonists, should be just as well-defined. In urban fantasy, these characters might be creatures like vampires or werewolves, or they could be humans caught in the crossfire. In dystopian settings, secondary characters often represent different factions or ideologies. Their relationships with the protagonist—whether they’re allies, enemies, or something in between—will create rich conflict and tension.

3. Plotting and Structure: The Backbone of the Story

Both urban fantasy and dystopian fiction thrive on strong plots that weave together personal struggles with broader societal issues. However, you don’t always have to follow a traditional narrative structure.

  • Outline or No Outline? Some writers swear by detailed outlines, while others dive in and discover the story as they go. For me, a hybrid approach works best. I like to have a rough outline of the major plot points—key events, character arcs, and climaxes—while leaving room for spontaneity and surprises along the way. This balance lets me maintain a sense of direction while still allowing creativity to flow. If you need help with this part of the process, check out So You Want To Write A Book and Just Write. I use both of these tools on a regular basis, especially when I am starting a new story.
  • Pacing is Essential. In urban fantasy, the plot often moves quickly, with twists, action scenes, and moments of discovery. But the key is to maintain tension while giving the reader enough time to absorb the world and connect with the characters. In dystopian fiction, pacing can be slower, building tension as the protagonist uncovers dark truths about the society they live in. But don’t let it drag—interspersing moments of action, tension, and discovery helps keep the reader engaged.
  • The Theme of Resistance. A central theme in both urban fantasy and dystopian novels is resistance—whether it’s resisting a villainous force, oppressive government, or internal fears. The plot should be a vehicle for exploring this resistance, with plenty of obstacles and challenges that force the protagonist to grow, adapt, and change.

4. Finding Your Voice: The Art of Writing

As a writer, developing a unique voice is crucial to standing out in any genre. For me, voice is the combination of writing style, character perspective, and tone. Urban fantasy tends to be fast-paced, sometimes humorous, while dystopian fiction often has a darker, more reflective tone. Here are some tips for finding your own voice:

  • Experiment with Perspectives. First-person narration can create intimacy, allowing the reader to experience the world through the protagonist’s eyes. Third-person omniscient narration allows you to zoom out and show multiple perspectives. Each has its strengths—experiment to find what works best for your story.
  • Play with Tone. Urban fantasy often combines action and humor, while dystopian fiction tends to be darker and more introspective. However, don’t be afraid to mix tones. A lighthearted moment in the midst of a dark world can make the contrast even more powerful.
  • Show, Don’t Tell. This age-old advice is especially true in speculative genres. The world you’re building and the emotions your characters experience should be conveyed through action and sensory detail, not just exposition. Instead of saying, “The city was full of magic,” show it through a character’s interaction with a magical object or an encounter with a supernatural creature.

5. Editing and Revision: Polishing Your World

The first draft is just that… the first draft… the beginning. Once you’ve completed your manuscript, the real work begins. Editing is a chance to refine your world-building, deepen character arcs, and tighten your plot. For urban fantasy and dystopian fiction, this often means ensuring that the world feels cohesive and that the internal logic makes sense.

  • Consistency is Key. Urban fantasy can be tricky because it blends the real and the magical. Ensure the rules of magic or supernatural elements remain consistent throughout. In dystopian fiction, the society you’ve built needs to follow its own logic—if a government controls everything, show us how, and if the environment is collapsing, make sure the signs of decay are present at every turn.
  • Pacing and Tension. Pay attention to pacing during revisions. If a scene feels slow or unnecessary, cut it. If a moment feels rushed, slow down and give the reader time to process what’s happening.

6. Staying Motivated: Overcoming Writer’s Block

Writing can be a long and sometimes lonely process. There will be days… weeks… and sometimes months when you’re not feeling inspired, or when the words don’t come as easily as you’d like. I’ve been there, too. I think every writer has from time to time. Here are a few tips to keep pushing forward:

  • Set Small Goals. Break your writing into manageable chunks. Write a set word count each day or aim to finish a chapter. This keeps you motivated and helps build momentum. If you can’t write every day, that is ok too. Just set yourself a schedule and plan to write when you say you’re going to write.
  • Take Breaks. Sometimes stepping away from your manuscript allows your brain to make connections you might have missed. Go for a walk, read a book, take a bath, or do something else creative to reset your mind.
  • Find Your Writing Community. Whether it’s online or in person, surrounding yourself with other writers can provide support, feedback, and encouragement.

Through the Veneer of Time
Always and Forever Book 1

For fans of Diana Gabaldon and Susanna Kearsley comes a riveting new tale of time travel and romantic suspense: A haunted painter’s past life visions are not the creative inspiration they seemed. They’re a harbinger of her ancient revenge vow, and her FBI husband won’t find the serial killer until she fulfills it. But it may already be too late.

1559, ULSTER, IRELAND. When a young noblewoman Neave McConway weds the newly elected King of Tyrone, Aedan O’Neal, the couple’s rare union of love and passion becomes the talk of the region. But Aedan’s bold rule and fierce defiance of the English crown threaten his powerful enemies, and they’ll stop at nothing to crush his growing influence. After Aedan rides off to fight against the English occupiers, Neave suffers a shocking attack that will forever alter both their lives — as well as the lives they have not yet lived.

2009, WASHINGTON, D.C. While mural artist Siena Forte battles a creative block, her FBI husband Ryan Casey struggles with a serial killer case. When research leads Siena to the practice of Past Life Regression, she stumbles upon irresistible inspiration. But after her art exposes her to a vicious ancient adversary, she discovers the true reason for her past life visions. They’re a harbinger of her centuries-old revenge vow, and the serial killer can’t be stopped until she fulfills it. But there is another person from the past with unfinished business—her husband.

Will Siena and Ryan settle their long-overdue score, or will the past repeat itself in a chilling parallel?

Into the Lure of Time
Always and Forever Book 2

In this gripping sequel to the award-winning novel, Through the Veneer of Time, echoes of Siena’s past life lure her into a shocking indiscretion that threatens to destroy her marriage. She alone can undo the damage, but this chilling revelation is only the beginning of her battle.

1564, ULSTER, IRELAND. After Aedan’s diplomatic visit to Queen Elizabeth’s court results in his compulsory divorce and arranged marriage, Neave’s violent unraveling drives her into another man’s arms. When despair makes her reckless, the price will be a lifetime of infamy, confinement, and isolation from what Neave treasures most—Aedan and her son.

Q&A With the Author

Q: What inspired you to write Through the Veneer of Time?
A:
My experience with Past Life Regression (PLR) felt like time travel—vivid and intense, filled with an explosion of colors, sounds, smells, and textures. Though my session ended abruptly and left the story incomplete, it profoundly impacted me and sparked this blend of Irish time travel romance, historical suspense, and FBI mystery.

Q: What can readers expect from your novel?
A: The plot bridges past and present, weaving a suspenseful love story with a dark historical thriller. Readers will encounter danger, love that transcends time and space, and a heroine who must confront her past life and buried secrets to reclaim her future.

Q: How do you approach writing such multi-genre stories?
A: For me, writing is like carving stone. I start with a rough draft, then refine each scene, layering in emotions, historical details, and suspense. I often listen to music when I write. It helps me connect with my characters, especially during dark or emotionally charged moments.

Q: What was the hardest part of writing this book?
A: Writing the serial killer’s perspective meant exploring the darkest corners of the human psyche. Balancing themes of trauma and redemption for my heroine was equally challenging, especially in one unconventional scene where the hero must make a morally gray choice to save her. It took months to perfect.

Q: Is there a message in your novel you want readers to grasp?
A: At its heart, Through the Veneer of Time celebrates love, honor, and resilience. It asks how far a man will go to save the woman he loves and what his wedding vow means when tested—to love in sickness as well as in health. The story explores how a couple can overcome physical and psychological obstacles together, complementing each other’s strengths. Ultimately, it’s a reminder that love has the power to conquer all.

The Book of Outcasts by Matt Nagin

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. That means, when you purchase a book using an Amazon link on this site, I earn an affiliate commission. All commission earnings go back into funding my books; editing, cover design, etc.

The Book of Outcasts features dynamic characters in surreal, often imaginative worlds. The stories run the gamut; in one, the narrator is stripped of his job, his apartment, and any semblance of civil liberties for not getting a brain implant; in another a compulsive gambler is so desperate to repay his debt he robs a casino; in a third, a writer, tormented by his pernicious doppelganger, goes to all lengths to exact revenge. There is also a film festival operator framed for ghastly murder on The French Riviera; a game show host who profits off a deadly pandemic; and a former nightclub comedian who gets abducted by aliens and taken to a planet where cannibalism is the norm.

Several of these stories were previously published. “The Failure” made “Best of Across The Margin 2021.”  “Whose Pandemic Is It Anyway?” was anthologized in The Rabbit Hole Vol 5 in 2022. Still others were published in literary journals such as The Binnacle, Void Magazine, and New Works Review.

The Book of Outcasts will be available on AMAZON on Monday, March 10, 2025! Reserve your copy today.

His humor book “Do Not Feed The Clown” was published by Tenth Street Press and he’s also put out three poetry books (one of which Kirkus Review deemed “powerful verse from a writer of real talent”). Additionally, Matt’s story “The Failure” made Best of Across The Margin and his poem “If We Are Doomed” won The Spirit First Editor’s Choice Award. Other work has been appeared in The Binnacle, NY’s Best Emerging Poets, and Rabbit Hole: Weird Stories Vol. 5. He also taught college writing at such institutions as Fordham, Long Island University, and Fashion Institute of Technology.

As an actor, Matt’s made many TV and film appearances, including in the film “Tango Shalom,” on the Discovery show “Street Justice: The Bronx,” and in the Amazon show “Hunters” in a scene with Al Pacino. Q&A WITH THE AUTHOR

Why do you write fiction?

I find it interesting to explore alternate realities. The other aspect of it is I rarely write with an outline. Hence, I am often entertaining myself when I write since I’m trying to figure out how this story will end. A final element that draws me to it is the editing process, which is really about trying to actualize the ideas in the first draft in the best way possible.

What is your new book about?

It’s a collection of short stories: “The Book of Outcasts.” As the title suggests, it’s really about characters who don’t fit into society for various reasons; they may be criminals, addicts, fringe artists, madmen etc. It’s really about exploring the inner worlds of these characters and the conflicts they face, often in a world that is hostile to their natural impulses. In some stories it’s about survival; in others it’s more about artistic and existential issues; in still others it is about acceptance of life on its own terms.

What got you into writing?

A poetry class I took at a summer program at Penn State got me into writing. In college, I became an English major and took more writing courses. Then I took screenwriting night classes at UCLA and did script coverage while in L.A. After that I did an M.A. at NYU, where there was a bunch of writing, and, for better or worse, I’ve been writing ever since.

What do you think makes a good story?

A plot that moves the action forward in a way that is compelling. The story should keep the reader wanting more. Another important element is capturing experience with immediacy and realism.

What do you want people to take away from your book?

I want them to enjoy the stories and explore these alternate realities. Additionally, in certain cases, my stories comment on aspects of our culture, so it would be great if readers considered our world in light of what the stories are suggesting. For example, Get Your Implant!, is about a man forced to get an A.I. implant to compete in the workforce; he gives up everything to avoid this reality but ultimately cannot hide. It’s a story that comments on the dangers of A.I. and the way technology may not be the Shangri-La some make it out to be. Is technological progress worth losing your soul? What really matters most? Progress? Or being who you really are? The story leaves the reader to reflect on where we as a society are heading.

What else do you want readers to know about you?

I have four other books available, three poetry books and one humor book. I try to change up what I’m doing. This way I’m offering readers something different, something a little unexpected. I think it’s important artistically to keep exploring and taking chances. Readers can reach out to me through my website at mattnagin.com.

A Critique is Not an Insult: The Power of Constructive Feedback in Writing

Writing is an intimate act. Authors pour their thoughts, emotions, and creativity into every word, each sentence carefully crafted to convey a piece of themselves to the world. When we put our work out there, we risk exposing our vulnerabilities to others, opening ourselves up to both praise and criticism. It’s natural to feel protective over our creations—after all, they are an extension of who we are. But here’s the truth that all writers must come to understand: a critique is not an insult. It is a powerful tool for growth and improvement. Trust me, learning or believing this lesson isn’t always easy.

The Purpose of Critique

At its core, a critique is about evaluating and offering feedback in a way that encourages development. It’s a way for writers to see their work from another perspective, to recognize both strengths and weaknesses they might not have noticed on their own. Critiques—whether given by a trusted friend, editor, or fellow writer—serve to refine the piece and help authors evolve. Constructive feedback isn’t about tearing someone down. It’s about lifting them up and guiding them toward better writing.

Think of it this way: no one is born knowing how to write perfectly. Every author, from the most seasoned to the newest, needs feedback to hone their craft. Even the greatest writers, like Hemingway and Orwell, relied on others to point out areas for improvement. Critique helps us grow, just as a sculptor chisels away at a block of stone to reveal the masterpiece within. It is a necessary step in the process of becoming better at our craft.

Critique Is About the Work, Not the Writer

One of the most important (and maybe hardest) distinctions to make is that a critique is about the work, not the person behind it. It is an evaluation of a specific story, essay, or novel, not a reflection of the author’s worth as an individual. When a critique points out flaws or areas for improvement, it is never meant to undermine the writer’s self-esteem or creative potential.

Unfortunately, the emotional connection between an author and their writing can sometimes blur this line. A negative critique can feel like a personal attack, but that is rarely the intention. Instead, it’s a sign that the work, as it stands, could benefit from revisions—just as any piece of art requires revisions before it can be truly considered finished. Even the best works in history have been revised multiple times before reaching their final form. Criticism, then, is a necessary step in this journey, a part of the art’s evolution.

Constructive Criticism: The Heart of Growth

Constructive criticism is the gold standard for feedback. It focuses on improvement, offering actionable suggestions while acknowledging what works well. The best critiques never simply say “This is bad” or “This doesn’t work.” Instead, they offer insight into why something doesn’t work and, more importantly, how to make it better. A good critique provides clarity on plot holes, character inconsistencies, pacing issues, or weak dialogue. It helps the writer see their work from different angles, offering solutions rather than just identifying problems.

As a writer, it’s essential to remain open to such feedback. Embrace the idea that all feedback—no matter how critical—comes with the potential for growth. Take a step back, detach emotionally, and view the critique objectively. Is there a kernel of truth in what’s being said? Can the suggested changes improve the overall quality of your work? Often, the answer will be yes.

The Personal Connection: Don’t Take It Personally

It’s easy to feel vulnerable when your work is critiqued. It can sting, especially if the feedback points out flaws you’ve worked hard to overlook or aspects of your writing you were especially proud of. But remember, a critique is not a judgment on you as a person. It does not diminish your talent, your creativity, or your ability as a writer. It’s simply a tool to make your writing the best it can be.

A critique can only hurt if you let it. Instead of viewing feedback as a negative judgment, try to see it as an opportunity to learn. Even harsh criticisms often contain valuable lessons. After all, no one becomes a master at something without making mistakes along the way—and writing is no exception.

A Final Thought: Embrace the Challenge

To be a writer is to be forever evolving, learning, and adapting. The work will always get better with each revision, with each thoughtful critique. It’s important to remember that a critique is a gift, not a condemnation. It’s a chance to refine your skills, to deepen your understanding of your craft, and to produce the best version of your work.

So, the next time you receive feedback—whether positive or critical—take a deep breath and embrace it. Understand that it’s not a reflection of you as a person but a reflection of your work in its current form. A critique is not an insult. It’s a steppingstone on the path to becoming the writer you’re destined to be.
