Barracuda Bay
Detective Emilia Cruz Book 9
by Carmen Amato
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Female Detective

Political corruption turns Acapulco’s first female police detective into a fugitive on the run . . . in Washington DC.
“A thrilling series” — National Public Radio

In a derelict building for sale, Acapulco police detective Emilia Cruz stumbles on the body of a woman brutally shot to death. Incredibly, the victim was the sister of Acapulco’s ambitious mayor, who is running for re-election against an opponent with deep pockets.

Emilia’s investigation is immediately under pressure for a fast result. The victim’s ex-boyfriend has a suspiciously weak alibi but is the crime scene the key to finding the murderer? The building was once used for a secret Mexican government operation targeting a ruthless drug lord.

Meanwhile, there’s a conspiracy within the police department to force Emilia out.

Before Emilia can save her job or arrest her prime suspect, she’s sent on an errand of mercy to Washington, DC.

There she becomes a fugitive hunted by killers masquerading as cops. Alone, desperate and on the run, Emilia turns for help to a man she once vowed to murder.

He’s her only chance to survive a deadly game of political intrigue on the wrong side of the border.

From Acapulco’s beaches to the streets of Washington, DC, the stakes couldn’t be higher in this electrifying, page-turning thriller.

2019 and 2020 Poison Cup award, Outstanding Series – CrimeMasters of America

“Emilia is a character who is close to my heart” – MysterySequels

“Amato brings her characters to life with her vivid writing style and sets them on the streets of a Mexico steeped in Catholicism and corruption” – OnlineBookClub.org

With unflinching authenticity from the author’s own espionage and counterdrug experience in Mexico and Central America, this is a female detective mystery series like no other.

The Emilia Cruz series is for fans of international mystery and crime by Ian Rankin, Jo Nesbo, Ann Cleeves, Donna Leon and Liza Marklund, plus the Department Q series by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Fans of Don Winslow’s cartel and border thrillers set in Mexico love the plots torn from the headlines of the Detective Emilia Cruz police series set in Acapulco.

What makes the Detective Emilia Cruz Series a Must-read?

BARRACUDA BAY is the 9th book in the Detective Emilia Cruz police series pitting the first female police detective in Acapulco against Mexico’s cartels, corruption and culture of machismo.

In the series, just like in the news coming out of Mexico, rival drug cartels fight for territory, politicians are bribed to look the other way, and ordinary people are caught in the middle.
The series takes readers behind the scenes of what’s happening in the war on drugs. Given that more than 100,000 Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses last year and there’s talk in Washington DC of designating drug cartels as terrorists, these are real issues that pack a real punch.

Emilia’s challenges are pulled from the headlines. There’s no need to make up bizarre serial killers when cartel violence and corrupt politicians provide more than enough inspiration. For example, Emilia’s perpetual hunt for women who have gone missing–referred to as Las Perdidas or the Lost Ones–was inspired by the hundreds of women missing from the Juarez area.

But BARRACUDA BAY and the other books in the 9-book series are also about a woman trying not to lose her soul in the wreckage. She wants a real relationship with hotel manager Kurt Rucker, but is afraid of being shackled by commitment. As a police detective, she threatens colleagues and even senior officers who see a woman in that role as a threat.
But she’s here to stay.

I’m deeply proud of the Emilia Cruz series and the way so many readers embrace the series. They’re the same readers who love international crime fiction and mystery by Jo Nesbo, Peter May, Louise Penny, Ann Cleeves, and Martin Cruz Smith, as well as Don Winslow’s cartel thrillers set in Mexico.

When a single dad and his son’s teacher clash, sparks fly and it’s not only because his son is neglecting his chores to read.

A Family With the Cowboy
The Westons of Montana Book 1
by Elsa Winckler
Genre: Contemporary Small-Town Romance

Widowed rancher Hayden Weston knows what it means to be responsible for his siblings, his eight-year-old son, and the running of the huge family cattle ranch. Some even call him a stern and grumpy taskmaster and they’re not exactly wrong. So when Hayden discovers his son reading a storybook instead of doing chores, he calls on Luke’s teacher to talk about priorities.
School teacher Laura Anderson is new to Marietta, Montana, and has never—until now—been reprimanded for encouraging a child to read. It doesn’t help that sweet Luke’s father is the handsome cowboy with the amber eyes that she met in Grey’s Saloon, or that she’s wildly attracted to him.
Sparks keep flying as their paths keep crossing, but Hayden is determined not to give in to his incomprehensible need to have, hold, and protect Laura from any type of harm. He’s the one who’ll hurt her if he lets her stray too close. He’s not ready to admit his feelings or commit to sharing his life with her.
Even if love comes tumbling in.

I have been reading love stories for as long as I can remember and when I ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry James The Brontë sisters, etc. during my Honours studies, I was hooked for life. I married my college boyfriend and soul mate and after 47 years, 3 interesting and wonderful children and 4 beautiful grandchildren, he still makes me weak in the knees. We are fortunate to live in the picturesque little seaside village of Betty’s Bay, South Africa with the ocean a block away and a beautiful mountain right behind us. And although life so far has not always been an easy ride, it has always been an exciting and interesting one! I like the heroines in my stories to be beautiful, feisty, independent and headstrong. And the heroes must be strong but possess a generous amount of sensitivity. They are of course, also gorgeous! My stories typically incorporate the family background of the characters to better understand where they come from and who they are when we meet them in the story.

What are your top 10 favorite books/authors?
Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
North and South – Mrs. Gaskell
Emma – Jane Austen
Middlemarch – George Eliot
Portrait of a lady – Henry James
Midnight at the blackbird café – Heather Webber
Covenant of Water – Abraham Verghese
Where the crawdads sing – Delia Owen
The Little Paris bookshop – Nina George
A year in Provence – Peter Mayle

What book do you think everyone should read?
Tolstoy’s War and Peace. I’m doing a slow read over on Substack with Simon Haisell and love every moment of it. What has struck me throughout the book is that people haven’t really changed or evolved. It’s a great book and one of those everyone should read at least once in their lives.

How long have you been writing?
Since 2008

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?
I’m not much of a plotter, but I do like to think about my characters before I start writing – where do they come from? What are their quirks and flaws, their childhood wounds and how can they grow in the course of the story. What I’ve found though, is that no matter how much you plan, like someone you meet for the first time, it takes time to get to know your characters and sometimes they are not the person you thought they should be!

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?
Doing research about a topic or setting is one of the best parts of writing for me. For this particular series, I read a lot about Montana ranching, about grazing, about cattle and about horses. I also had a wonderful time researching animal whisperers and empaths. 

Do you see writing as a career?
Oh, yes. I only started writing after I’ve retired. Our three kids are grown-up and living their own lives, the dogs we had, died, so now I only have my husband to keep happy!

What do you think about the current publishing market?
It has changed very quickly over the past decade, I think. Publishing your own book wasn’t even a possibility a few decades ago, now it seems more and more authors prefer to do it on their own. And of course, social media has probably changed the way of advertising for ever.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
Reading has always been my escape from the real world. I’ve read hundreds and thousands of romances but I also love cosy mysteries (Agatha Christie was a favorite while growing up) suspense, but nothing too vivid, please  And I love the classics. Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Mrs. Gaskell, Henry James, Virginia Wolf, George Eliot, to name a few. This year I’m doing a slow reading of Tolstoy’s War and Peace with Simon Haisell over at Substack and I’m really enjoying it.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I can shut out background noise when I’m writing. I love music and sometimes have a song that inspires a story, but I don’t listen to music while I’m writing. If I’m really into the story, I don’t hear anything else but in the planning stages I prefer silence.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I write one book at a time. When writing a series, like The Westons of Montana, I do think about the other stories and take notes that I’ll need for the rest of the series but I only concentrate on one story at a time.

The Unforgetting
by Bonnie Traymore
Genre: Psychological Thriller, Suspense

Ten years ago, Reagan’s friend died in a tragic accident.
But what if it wasn’t an accident?

The morning after a raging college graduation party, we found Lanie Martin lying at the bottom of a ravine, her neck snapped in a fatal fall. And I’m not proud of what came next.

Before we called the police, we covered ourselves. Cleaned up from the blow-out at Ella’s cabin in the Adirondacks the night before. Got our stories straight.

Ella begged me not to tell the police what I saw. She insisted that it was an accident—and we all went along. What did I know? I was plastered that night, and large chunks of that evening are missing for me.

But now, in my postpartum state, memories are starting to return, and I can’t help but feel that they might be connected to the soul crushing depression I’ve been experiencing. Is it guilt? Or do I know more than I think I do?

So when I receive Ella’s invitation for a ten-year reunion at her family camp—a gathering of remembrance and healing, she’s calling it—I know I have to go.

Are the memories I’m struggling to recover the key to my moving on? To being able to take care of my infant son and stay married to the perfect man?

Or are they a death sentence for me, too?

“The Unforgetting is a great read filled with tension on every page, stunning twist after twist, and a mind-blowing ending that you’ll never see coming. Highly recommended!” – R.G. Belsky, author of the Clare Carlson series.

“The Unforgetting is a riveting, twisty, slow-burn atmospheric thriller that will delight and disturb, in the best possible ways. Highly recommended.” Douglas Corleone, international bestselling author of Falls to Pieces

My name is Harleigh Sinclair. I have a gift to find lost artifacts, though there are some who call it a curse…
When I discover a riddle etched inside a goldstone skull, it may be the clue I need to discover not only the Viking shield, but the famed sword of King Arthur, Excalibur.
After my father was attacked by a Blood Raider over a decade ago, and his sword stolen, my life’s mission has been to find his attacker and bring justice to our family. But before I can find the attacker, I must first discover the original four artifacts before the Blood Raiders obtain them first.
With the aid of the insufferable and dangerously handsome Jagg Ransom, plus my sister and a team of handpicked experts, we follow the riddle’s clues. Our search leads us from a Viking Museum in Norway, to underground crypts in Bristol, England, and finally to a forest haunted by a legendary hellhound. But we’re not alone.
The Blood Raiders have gotten desperate. And they’ve been following us. If we don’t find the shield first, they’ll attain more power than we can comprehend, and not only will we fail, but we’ll be doomed to die at their hands.

White Picket Fences is a heartfelt family drama fueled by an honest story of motherhood, written for those of us caught up in our own self-searching journeys. The one thing Julie Cahill knows because of her transitory upbringing as a military brat is that she never had a hometown. So she has made sure her kids would grow up in one forever home, in a forever neighborhood, with lots of forever friends. Yet her dream of a permanent hometown has her feeling fenced in.
Set in the Delaware Bay area, Julie has achieved her dreams but struggles with having to accept invisibility, underappreciation, and being taken for granted by her family in trade for her unconditional love. Not So Little Things
Behind Closed Words Collection #2

Tina Edwards loved her childhood and creating fairy houses, a passion shared with her father, a world-renowned architect. But at nine years old, she found him dead at his desk and is haunted by this memory. Tina’s mother abruptly moved away leaving Tina with feelings of abandonment and suspicion. Raised by her loving, wheelchair-bound Aunt Liddy, her father’s sister, 33 year old Tina has become a miniature room artist and cherishes the control she has over her life in Northeast Georgia as she works hard to please her beloved dead father’s wishes of following in his footsteps in art and history.

At the same time Mr. Jake Martin, all six-foot three of him, with a heavy southern drawl and winsome dimple, hires Tina to build replicas of the original rooms of his own family’s Victorian mansion purchased to turn into a B&B, Tina’s estranged, dying mother re-enters her life with family secrets that must be told. Amid their research for Jake, Tina and her assistant find out that stories from his past were unfounded and prove that miscommunications and misperceptions passed down through families create unwarranted, painful separations, echoing Tina’s life story.
