Off Season

A Detective Ryan Mystery #1

Detective Ryan navigates drug overdoses, a mysterious foot on the beach and a long-buried cold case.

Detective Ramesh Ryan’s career with Sydney’s prestigious Organized Crime Unit is on the up, until he loses a court case against the city’s most powerful drug dealer. In disgrace, the detective is relocated to the tiny Australian beach town of Barton.

It is off-season in Barton-when its few criminals usually take a well-earned rest. But not this year! With the detective’s arrival, the town suddenly becomes murder central. Two bodies are discovered in the space of days, both victims of drug overdoses. Then a mysterious foot is found washed up on the beach, and memories are awoken of an unsolved cold case of the teenager who disappeared fifteen years ago. Add to this a blossoming romance, along with a contract taken out on Ryan’s life, and it’s clear that the detective has jumped out of the Sydney frying pan into the Barton fire.

What follows is an action-packed adventure, thrilling at every turn-where truth and lies are almost impossible to separate, and unexpected twists are the order of the day.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

I do a lot of research before I start writing including checking up on police procedure, pathology etc.

Do you see writing as a career?

For me writing isn’t so much as a career, more as a necessity of life. I know this sounds pretentious so let me explain. There are many paths to take when considering writing as a career. You can become a journalist, write screenplays, work in public relations… it’s a long list.  Few of these paths lead to the writer earning big bucks. For the most part writing’s not that sort of career. However, most writers don’t have much of a choice. They really do feel the need to write, just as a painter has to paint, a musician has to be involved with some sort of music, an actor has to act… and so on.

What do you think about the current publishing market?

Difficult — both for writers and publishing companies to make a living, particularly with the advent of AI, and the mistaken belief that a machine can write with soul.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I read a lot when I’m not writing, predominantly thrillers.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I always try and write in silence because I find noise distracting.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

Several going at a time? You have got to be kidding.

A day in the life of the author?

For me an average day begins around nine o’clock when I settle in my office to start work. Exactly what I do for the next five hours or so depends on the stage I’m at with the book. First up I do research. Then it’s time for detailed plotting. Next its writing. For the first draft I just concentrate on getting words on a page. I don’t worry about inspiration at this stage. Then it’s time for the edit, when I work with an editor and try and knock some decent shape into the novel. Whatever the stage, I have to get out of my office, walk, exercise and meet friends daily. I also try and not think about work over the weekends, but refuel by eating out, seeing movies, going to the theatre or lying on the beach.

Advice they would give new authors?

As the great sage Nike said:  Just do it.

What makes a good story?

One that wants to make you find out what happens next.

What are they currently reading?

The Unquiet Grave by Dervla McTiernan

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I have tried both writing with just an outline, and writing after extensive plotting. The latter works best for me.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Procrastination. There are always reasons and distractions to prevent you actually sitting down and beginning work.

Inspiration. Don’t wait for this, it will rarely come.  When you write you have good and bad days — some when you feel pleased with the results and feel inspired, and others when you wonder why you bother.  However, when you finally complete the book you really won’t remember which day was which. It won’t matter. What will matter is that you’ve finished the book.

Writing to make your fortune:. It rarely ever happens. If it’s money you’re after rethink your priorities.   Forget writing and become a banker or an accountant.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Graphic love scenes.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I don’t really know what my readers want. I prefer to write something that I believe I would like to read.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

That they are from the opposite sex.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Anything from one to two years.

Badges, Bondage, and Murder: Meet the Cops & Doms of the Domme Mom Murder Mystery Series!

Welcome to the wild world of the Domme Mom Murder Mystery series, where crime, kink, and chaos collide! Our fearless and occasionally reckless heroine, Rhonda Campbell, isn’t your typical suburban mom—she’s a dominatrix with a secret side gig as an undercover agent for the Atlantic City Police Department. And if juggling PTA meetings and police sting operations wasn’t enough, she’s also navigating the undeniable sexual tension between her and the ever-brooding Detective Jason Dee.

But let’s be real—solving crime in Atlantic City takes more than just a dynamic duo. It takes an entire army of sharp-tongued cops, quick-witted dominants, and enough snark to keep things spicy. So, as the series unfolds, you’ll be seeing plenty of these recurring characters—whether they’re busting bad guys, stirring up drama, or just trying and failing to keep Rhonda from jumping headfirst into danger.

Let’s meet the crew who’ll be keeping crime and each other in check!

Rhonda Campbell—aka Mistress Kali—is the reigning queen of D.O.M.M.E, LLC, the Jersey Shore’s top BDSM dungeon. Once a teen mom balancing legal briefs and baseball games, she traded secretarial work for six-figure fantasies, turning her dominance into a thriving business. But when a client turns up dead, Rhonda finds herself entangled in a mess even she can’t control. With a killer on the loose and an annoyingly attractive detective on her case, she’s about to learn that crime-fighting might just be the kinkiest challenge yet.

Detective Jason Dee thought he left his demons behind in Philly, but when his ex-wife relocated to New Jersey with their daughter, so did he. Now working homicide in Atlantic City, he’s seen the worst the city has to offer—though nothing haunts him quite like his unfinished face-off with a serial killer who slipped through his fingers. Jason prefers cases that follow the rules, but when a murder leads him straight into the world of BDSM and the infuriatingly captivating Mistress Kali, he realizes he’s in for a whole new kind of power struggle—one that might cost him more than just control.

Emily Wiley—better known as MistressCoyote in the dungeon—owns every inch of her power, both as a plus-size goddess and as Rhonda’s ride-or-die since childhood. As co-owner of D.O.M.M.E, LLC, she keeps the business running like a well-oiled machine, effortlessly balancing dominance with deep, genuine care for her clients. When Rhonda goes undercover, there’s only one person she trusts to hold down the fort, and that’s Emily. But while everyone else buys into Rhonda’s relentless bickering with Detective Dee, Emily isn’t fooled—she sees the sparks flying beneath the snark and is just waiting for the inevitable explosion.

Detective Hashim Waqar is the antidote to Jason’s perpetual gloom—jovial, full of dad jokes, and utterly fascinated by D.O.M.M.E, LLC and its colorful clientele. He approaches the dungeon with wide-eyed curiosity and a never-ending supply of puns, much to the exasperation of both Rhonda and Jason. He’s especially intrigued by Emily—because, well, baby got back—but as a devoted family man, his admiration stays strictly in the “look, don’t touch” category. While Jason broods and Rhonda schemes, Hashim provides the comic relief… whether they like it or not.

Daphne Dinglehopper—better known as Mistress Sparkles—brings glitter, giggles, and a whole lot of furry fun to D.O.M.M.E, LLC. Specializing in the niche world of anthropomorphic fantasies, she’s as comfortable with a whip as she is with a fluffy tail. A little ditzy but endlessly endearing, Daphne has a knack for making friends everywhere she goes—whether they’re cops, dommes, or somewhere in between. While others navigate power struggles, she breezes through life with wide-eyed enthusiasm and a sparkling personality that’s hard to resist.

Vashaan Jacobs, whose alias is Black Silk runs security at D.O.M.M.E, LLC with the same discipline and precision that got him through the Marines. A former physical therapist for wounded warriors, he knows a thing or two about resilience—both mental and physical—and isn’t afraid to step in when things get out of hand. Silent but imposing, he’s the dungeon’s watchful guardian, ensuring that every scene stays safe and every threat is handled quietly and efficiently. While he doesn’t say much, when Vashaan speaks, people listen—and usually think twice before crossing him.

Mavis Kim is the head forensic scientist for the Atlantic City Police Department, and while her monotone voice makes it nearly impossible to gauge her emotions, don’t let that fool you—she’s sharp, quick-witted, and never short on snippy remarks aimed at the detectives. With a mind as precise as her work, Mavis is often the one to crack the case wide open, though her sarcasm and dry humor leave little room for small talk.

Jeremy Sylvester, aka One Nip, is a giant ginger with a back story as wild as his nickname. A former Olympic swimmer, his career took an unexpected turn when he lost a nipple in a poolside brawl. Now, as a bodyguard at D.O.M.M.E, LLC, he channels his muscular frame into protecting the dungeon’s most precious assets. Despite his size, Jeremy is as sensitive as they come and quick to get emotional. Big heart, big muscles, and a vulnerability that makes him the ultimate lovable softie.

Granger Cattau, aka Master Ranger, is the charismatic dom who caters to the dungeon’s gay clientele with flair and finesse. A musical theater school dropout, he uses his acting skills to bring a dramatic intensity to his dominant persona, commanding attention with every move. But once the dungeon doors close, Granger sheds his tough exterior and reveals his true self: a flamboyant, sweet-hearted teddy bear who’s all about spreading love and kindness. With a sharp wit and a heart of gold, he’s got a way of making every scene feel like a Broadway performance—complete with a standing ovation at the end.

Last but definitely not least—in more ways than one—is Benjamin Gigl, aka Master Obelisk. The male dungeon master who caters to both men and women, Obelisk is a fan favorite; not just for his commanding presence but also for being very well-endowed, which he proudly showcases in tight latex outfits that leave little to the imagination. Openly bisexual and in a polyamorous relationship with six other people including a former Amish man, Benji is all about living life without restrictions. Confident, charismatic, and unapologetically himself, Obelisk brings a whole new level of pleasure and play to D.O.M.M.E, LLC—and, well, he knows it.

So this is the Domme Mom crew, and trust me, their story is just getting started. I’ve got at least twelve more stories outlined, so buckle up—this ride’s not slowing down anytime soon. Grab your copy of Tickled to Death today and dive into the first chapter of the series, because you’re going to want to be there from the very beginning. And just you wait for Book 2, Blow the Whistle, hitting shelves in 2026! Rhonda and Vashaan go undercover in a medium-security prison, which means the detectives are stuck stepping in as security guards. Yeah, you can already imagine the chaos. Don’t miss it—things are about to get even kinkier… and much, much more dangerous.

Detective Emilia Cruz Book 9
by Carmen Amato
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Female Detective

Political corruption turns Acapulco’s first female police detective into a fugitive on the run . . . in Washington DC.
“A thrilling series” — National Public Radio

In a derelict building for sale, Acapulco police detective Emilia Cruz stumbles on the body of a woman brutally shot to death. Incredibly, the victim was the sister of Acapulco’s ambitious mayor, who is running for re-election against an opponent with deep pockets.

Emilia’s investigation is immediately under pressure for a fast result. The victim’s ex-boyfriend has a suspiciously weak alibi but is the crime scene the key to finding the murderer? The building was once used for a secret Mexican government operation targeting a ruthless drug lord.

Meanwhile, there’s a conspiracy within the police department to force Emilia out.

Before Emilia can save her job or arrest her prime suspect, she’s sent on an errand of mercy to Washington, DC.

There she becomes a fugitive hunted by killers masquerading as cops. Alone, desperate and on the run, Emilia turns for help to a man she once vowed to murder.

He’s her only chance to survive a deadly game of political intrigue on the wrong side of the border.

From Acapulco’s beaches to the streets of Washington, DC, the stakes couldn’t be higher in this electrifying, page-turning thriller.

What makes the Detective Emilia Cruz Series a Must-read?

BARRACUDA BAY is the 9th book in the Detective Emilia Cruz police series pitting the first female police detective in Acapulco against Mexico’s cartels, corruption and culture of machismo.

In the series, just like in the news coming out of Mexico, rival drug cartels fight for territory, politicians are bribed to look the other way, and ordinary people are caught in the middle.
The series takes readers behind the scenes of what’s happening in the war on drugs. Given that more than 100,000 Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses last year and there’s talk in Washington DC of designating drug cartels as terrorists, these are real issues that pack a real punch.

Emilia’s challenges are pulled from the headlines. There’s no need to make up bizarre serial killers when cartel violence and corrupt politicians provide more than enough inspiration. For example, Emilia’s perpetual hunt for women who have gone missing–referred to as Las Perdidas or the Lost Ones–was inspired by the hundreds of women missing from the Juarez area.

But BARRACUDA BAY and the other books in the 9-book series are also about a woman trying not to lose her soul in the wreckage. She wants a real relationship with hotel manager Kurt Rucker, but is afraid of being shackled by commitment. As a police detective, she threatens colleagues and even senior officers who see a woman in that role as a threat.
But she’s here to stay.

I’m deeply proud of the Emilia Cruz series and the way so many readers embrace the series. They’re the same readers who love international crime fiction and mystery by Jo Nesbo, Peter May, Louise Penny, Ann Cleeves, and Martin Cruz Smith, as well as Don Winslow’s cartel thrillers set in Mexico.

I’ve been a reader of fantasy and science fiction since I was ten. Lord of the Rings is still my favorite. I now read Butcher (Dresden) and Salvatore (Drizzt), as well at Sanderson and others. The Mid Dreki Realm got its start with a comment with my then fifteen year old son. That kernel grew into a book, which split into two, and is now a five book series. I retired at 57 and began the process of becoming a writer. I’ve attended a half dozen conferences, read numerous books on the art of writing, joined critique groups, and immersed myself in the craft. I’m a member of Apex, a group founded by David Farland (Runelord).
I live in the foothills between Colorado Springs and Denver with my wife. Deer, turkeys, bear, coyotes, and my three children and 2 grandchildren occasionally drop by.

The Life and Times of Sherlock Holmes
Essays on Victorian England Book V
by Liese Sherwood-Fabre
Genre: Nonfiction History, Literary Criticism

Rediscover Victorian England’s forgotten history and culture.

Volume V of The Life and Times of Sherlock Holmes explores the cultural, scientific, and historical allusions found throughout Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective stories. This collection of essays unpacks twenty-four topics mentioned in the original mysteries, from everyday details like hats and plumbing to complex issues such as international spying, the binomial theorem, and relations with Russia. Through such insights, readers gain a deeper understanding of the Victorian world in which Holmes operated.

Other essays explore both the familiar and the obscure, touching on subjects like the KKK’s presence in England, the significance of whaling, and legal concepts like insanity and blackmail. Unique cultural topics—such as the role of curry in the British Empire, the rise of bohemianism, and the Victorian obsession with rejuvenation through animal hormones—reveal the rich complexity of the era. The collection also features a bonus essay on Sarah Cushing from The Adventure of the Cardboard Box, offering fresh insight into one of the most sinister characters in the Canon.

Whether examining automata, wax figures, or the legal definitions of murder and suicide, The Life and Times of Sherlock Holmes provides a compelling lens through which readers gain a deeper understanding of the historical and social backdrop of the Holmes mysteries.

A must-read for Sherlockians, history enthusiasts, and anyone eager to uncover the hidden layers of Victorian England.

A Little Texas for Sherlock

Being a native-born Texan, I was happy to find Sherlock Holmes also has some ties to Texas. Lillie Langtry, a British actress romantically linked to King Edward VII, is thought to have influenced the character of Irene Adler. Judge Roy Bean, the colorful saloon owner and self-proclaimed “Law West of the Pecos,” was so taken with the actress (whom he never met), he named his saloon “Jersey Lily” and his town Langtry, Texas. The town remains as a quirky historical tribute to her lasting charm and Bean’s unrequited admiration. A second tie comes from a ship. Holmes tracks a suspect to the ship “The Lone Star” in “The Five Orange Pips.” Even Watson knows Texas is “The Lone Star State.”

I decided to add my own Texas tie to Holmes. In Master of the Art of Detection, one story involves another of the more famous characters in Texas history. The pirate Jean Lafitte made his mark on the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana. For several years, he used Galveston Island (near Houston) as a base to raid Spanish ships and trade goods on the black market. Known for playing both sides, he also occasionally aided the U.S., most notably by providing intelligence and supplies to Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. At the same time, his base on Galveston Island became a haven for smuggling and piracy. Though Lafitte was ultimately expelled from Texas, his legacy continues through the legends surrounding the treasure he left buried somewhere on the island. Holmes, however, soon uncovers Lafitte’s secrets.

These ties connect Victorian England with the rough, colorful world of 19th-century Texas and bridge two seemingly different worlds whose spirit of adventure and intrigue knows no boundaries. By adding a Texas mystery to Holmes’ cases, I honor my state’s tradition of unique characters and history and make Holmes’s adventures as boundless as the Texas sky.

Hi. I’m Brandon Barrows. Maybe we’ve met before. Maybe you know me from my previous novel Burn Me Out, or from stories of mine that have appeared in various magazines and anthologies. Burn Me Out and many of those stories are lodged firmly in the noir category of crime fiction, so Strangers’ Kingdom is something a little different for me: a true mystery. It’s also a police procedural set in rural Vermont, which was harder to write than it sounds.

So it’s something different for me as a writer. So what, you might think. Well, I’ll tell you: because it’s a novel I put a tremendous amount of effort, heart, and hopefully you’ll agree, soul into that I know you’ll enjoy.

Let’s start with the basics – the blurb.

Politically blacklisted detective Luke Campbell’s last chance in law-enforcement is a job with the police department of rural Granton, Vermont. It’s a beautiful town, home to a beautiful, intriguing girl who’s caught his eye, and it’s a chance at redemption. Even if his new boss seems strange, secretive, and vaguely sinister, Campbell is willing to give this opportunity a shot. And no sooner does he make that decision than the first in a series of murders is discovered, starting a chain of events that will change the lives of everyone in this once-quiet town…

How does that grab you? Interested in knowing a little more, hopefully?

Well, the setting came first. While the town of Granton is fictional, the area where the book is set, Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, is very real. In fact, it’s where my mother grew up and a place I still have family. Being in a sort of triangle between two states and Canada, there’s a lot that goes on up there, probably more than we’ll ever know. Despite everything that can happen in such a setting, though, for most people, a rural town is a very small world and that’s certainly true of the main character, Luke Campbell. Luke grew up in Vermont, but lived most of his adult life in Albany, New York before coming to Granton. Because of that, it’s less a homecoming for him than it is a brand-new world, something both he as the protagonist and I, as the writer, were continually discovering while I wrote it.

So why a police procedural mystery? Truthfully, it didn’t start out that way. It began as a rural noir, like many of my short stories, but I discovered early on that it just wasn’t working for me. I couldn’t tell the story the way it needed to be told if I stuck to that and I liked the ideas I had for this book so much, I wasn’t willing to create something I felt inferior, so I played around with the format, switched it up, and ended up creating an entirely new protagonist to go along with the new format.

And you know, I really liked Luke Campbell, right from the start. He’s had a rough go of it, and he’s still trying to make the best of it, while going out of his way to help people—like a lonely, bullied little boy and his mother, both of him Luke comes to care about deeply—even though he’s got every right to be bitter about his situation.

Of course, he’s just one of the characters, but he is the main character and I like to think he both embodies the central theme of the novel and recognizes it for himself in the course of the work: that there are no “bad guys” or “good guys” out there, just people. Everyone does terrible things at some point in their life—whether intentionally or not—and not one of us is completely “bad”. Everyone is just trying to get along and do the best they can. Sometimes we fail at that. There are certainly criminals in this novel, but everyone in it is guilty to some extent and everyone has their good qualities, too. I always try to infuse my work with emotion, and this is something that really hit me as I was writing Strangers’ Kingdom, so I hope it’s something that comes across to you, the readers.

As I said, this is a book I put a lot of effort into. It took me nearly three years, off and on, to write – longer than any of my other novels, by far. But it was worth it. I’m very happy with it and I hope you will be, too. So do us both a favor and give it a read, will you? If you like mysteries, crime, and small-town stories about people doing their best I know you’ll love it as much as I do.
