Finding Inspiration in the least likely place!

My university degree is in the performing arts; a dual major in Theatre & Communications. Acting has been my passion for a very long time. After college, I moved to Los Angeles, like so many other hopeful young actors, to make a go of it. I booked a few low budget films, a dozen commercials, and a handful of indie-films, but my big break never happened.

Eventually, some life changes took me away from Los Angeles and my dreams of becoming a professional actor. Don’t get me wrong, I did NOT give up on acting. I still do the occasional play, every now and then, when I can make my real job line up with rehearsals. Although, it isn’t the same.

I’ve been away from Los Angeles, and my dreams, for over 15 years now and I still find myself overcome with sadness every time the Academy Awards are on.

How’s that for honesty?!

Truth be told, I have a great life and a family I adore. Plus, I’ve been lucky enough to have found other artistic outlets that bring me true happiness; theatre of course, but also writing.

Last night, while I sat with my son while he watched an episode of Liv and Maddie (Season 2 Episode 2) I found inspiration in something the father said to Maddie, “Just because you can’t do something you love, doesn’t mean you have to stop loving it.”

For the last 15 years, I’ve felt guilty for missing Los Angeles. As if leaving my dreams behind meant that I had to give up that passion. I felt like the ‘move’ was supposed to be easier and that there was something wrong with me because I wasn’t able to just let go of the goals I had been working toward for so long. Last night I realized that it’s ok to hang on to that passion, those goals, those dreams. It’s okay to embrace them not only through theatre but also through other forms of art such as writing.

So, whatever your passion is, know that you don’t ever have to give it up – not fully.

2013 New Year’s Resolutions

Okay, we are 8 days into the new year and I have finally decided what I want my New Year’s Resolutions to be! NO IT IS NOT TO LATE. Actually I believe that it is never to late to come up with a New Year’s Resolution. The thing is, if I had just made some up on New Years Eve just so that I could start them on January 1st I would never have kept them. I would have picked things like…

  1. Give up Chocolate – GIVE ME A BREAK! There is no way in HELL that would have stuck more than a few hours.
  2. Workout Daily – HELLO? Who has time for a daily workout, unless you count the constant back and forth walking while working.

So, now that we are eight (8) days into the New Year I have come up with a list of resolutions that actually mean something to me, and because of that I think that I will be able to keep them.

  1. Love my husband better!
  2. Spend more one on one time with my children!
  3. Learn to cook – I am taking a once a week cooking lesson with my mother-in-law
  4. Join Hot Yoga! I loved yoga back in college – I’m not going to mention how long ago that was, but I am hoping to enjoy it again.
  5. Read more, just for fun!
  6. Get back into Theatre! I have my first audition (IN YEARS) on January 20th and 21st!
  7. Produce a show – Theatre of course! I have a meeting next week to discuss doing this in the next 6 months at the local university.
  8. WRITE WRITE WRITE! I want to finish book two (2) of the Blood Angel series – If I ever get it back from the editor.
  9. Produce a film – My husband is an AMAZING author, and he wrote this short film… years ago… and I would love to help him tweak it and put it together… maybe get a few hits online…. We shall see.

Okay, that is a pretty long list, and it really is more of a list of goals but I think that is okay. These are my goals/resolutions for 2013. Some are short-term but most of them are long-term.

So, what are your 2013 New Year’s Resolutions/Goals? If you didn’t make any why not do it now?!
