Deliverers Character Interviews: Captain Burt Sharky
Our Deliverers Character Interview Series continues with an interview with Captain Burt Sharky, the meanest, toughest, nastiest pirate to sail the high seas. This should be interesting. I hope he doesn’t pillage and burn the place!
Greg: Well, thank you for taking the time to sit down and chat with us, Captain Sharky.
Sharky: Argh! Aint no trouble at all matey. Every once in a while it’s good t’ get outta the water inta drydock an’ scrape the barnacles off m’ keel.
Greg: I can see how that would be necessary from time to time. Tell us a little bit about yourself, if you don’t mind.
Sharky: Well, I been at sea most o’ m’ life.
Greg: Oh, that’s marvelous. Did you start as a cabin boy?
Sharky: No, nothin’ like that. See, m’ old man were a pirate. When he spotted a ship he wanted to pillage, he and the rest o’ the crew’d get belowdecks and leave me on deck by m’self. I were only about 7 or 8, and I’d set to hollerin’ and whinin’ and carryin’ on. The target ship’d always come see what the fuss were about. They’d see me alone on deck, and I’d shout that everyone were washed overboard in a storm. They’d come over to rescue me, and m’ dad’s crew would overpower ‘em and board their ship. We took a lot of fat prizes that way.
Greg: Oh, how, umm, cute.
Sharky: Them were the days. ‘Bout the only happy times I can remember, ‘cept o’ course when I found m’ ring. Things started lookin’ up after that.
Greg: Your ring?
Sharky: Aye. I took it from a lubber one time when I was ashore. I’d lost m’ ship and I wanted the ring to finance a new one. I ran the dog through, an’ took the ring, but I couldn’t bring m’ self to sell it. Instead, I kept it and stole a merchant vessel.
I recruited a new crew, found a good island hideout, and set about plunderin’ vessels. I grew to be successful an’ set up a piratin’ empire. I was known throughout the world as the meanest, dirtiest, most rotten scoundrel to sail the high seas.
Greg: So I understand. What happened with Cal Endria and his group?
Sharky: Endria and his lilly livered dogs were nothin’ but cowardly sheep. They lost their stomach for fighten’ an’ wanted to settle down. I should of keel hauled the lot of ‘em. Instead, though, I decided that they could be useful in their own way.
I set up the Tariff where they had to give me half of everything they produced for a hunnert years. Then after the hunnert years had gone by, I double crossed ‘em. I came sailin’ in with a new weapon and kept chargin’ the Tariff twice a year for another two hunnert, until that kid an’ his bird came.
Greg: Hold on. Just how long have you been alive?
Sharky: I were born over 350 years ago. It were the ring, ya see. It give me long life and’great power. No one ever thought to double cross ol’ Sharky, because I beat Death hisself. Then along came that Eric brat an’ his bird. Arghhh, I can’t talk ‘bout it no more! Read the cursed book.
Greg: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Sharky: Oh, I don’t know. Terrorizin’ children an’ small animals, bullyin’, belittlin’, swearin’, carryin’ on, hangin’ swabs from the yardarm, the usual things, I s’pose.
Greg: Have you ever come across Captain Jack Sparrow?
Sharky: Arghhhhh! Don’t mention that name! The slippery eel still owes me his ship, the Black Pearl. I won it fair an’ square in a poker game, but he give me the slip when I were tryin’ to take possession. If he ever comes across me bow again, he’ll get a long, painful death, or my name ain’t Captain Burt Sharky!
Greg: How has the release of the book impacted your life?
Sharky: Are ya daft?! How has it affected m’ life? It’s ruined it ya lubber, that’s what it’s done! I can’t show m’self at any pirate meets. I get so mad, I could run someone through!

Sharky: How do I get out of this pigsty? I’ve got to get back to m’ ship. I’m thinkin’ of startin’ a ghost pirate crew. Mortals can’t stand ghosts!

Writing a novel can feel like a monumental task. However, one of the key steps to making the process smoother is creating a clear and detailed outline. The beauty of outlining is that it allows you to visualize your story from start to finish, saving you from writer’s block and disorganization along the way. While outlining typically takes weeks or months, it’s entirely possible to map out an entire novel in a single day. Here’s how you can do it.
1. Set the Stage: Preparation is Key
Before diving into the actual outline, take a few moments to prepare yourself. This stage sets the tone for a productive day of writing.
Create the right environment: Find a quiet place where you can focus. Whether that’s a cozy nook at home, a local coffee shop, or a park, the environment should inspire you, not distract you.
Gather materials: All you need is a notebook, pen, or a digital device if that’s your preference. Choose whichever you’ll feel most comfortable working with for extended hours.
Clear your mind: Start with a quick brainstorming session. Jot down any ideas you’ve had for the novel. These might be rough thoughts on plot, characters, settings, or themes. Don’t worry about how they connect at this point—just let your creativity flow.
2. Define Your Story’s Core
The foundation of your novel rests on its core. Spend some time deciding what your story is truly about.
Theme: What is the central message or theme you want to explore? Is it about love, redemption, survival, or personal transformation? Knowing your theme will guide the plot’s direction.
Genre and Tone: What genre are you writing in? Fantasy, romance, mystery, sci-fi, historical fiction, etc.? Defining this early will help you set the tone for the narrative.
Premise: Condense your story into one or two sentences. This is your novel’s elevator pitch, the hook that gets you and your potential readers excited. A solid premise will keep you focused as you build the plot.
3. Craft the Main Plot
Now that you know your story’s foundation, let’s start constructing the main plot.
The Three-Act Structure: Most novels follow a three-act structure. Break your novel into three major sections: the setup, the confrontation, and the resolution.
Act One (Setup): Introduce your protagonist, their world, and the central problem. Think about how you’ll hook your readers from the beginning. What inciting incident will push your character out of their comfort zone?
Act Two (Confrontation): This is where the majority of the action happens. The protagonist faces obstacles that challenge them and force growth. Consider how your character will change during this act. What stakes increase as the story progresses?
Act Three (Resolution): Tie up the loose ends. What final confrontation or moment of revelation will allow your protagonist to confront their main problem? The resolution should offer closure but can also leave room for future growth or sequels if necessary.
Pacing and Conflict: For each act, plan out major turning points—moments when the story takes an unexpected turn or when stakes are raised. Conflict drives the plot, so ensure you’re constantly challenging your protagonist.
4. Develop Characters
A great plot relies on compelling characters. Spend time outlining their motivations, arcs, and key traits.
Protagonist: Who is your main character? What do they want, and what’s standing in their way? Understanding your protagonist’s internal and external conflicts will guide their actions throughout the story.
Antagonist: Who or what opposes your protagonist? Whether it’s a villain, societal structure, or the character’s own flaws, the antagonist creates conflict and challenges the protagonist’s goals.
Supporting Cast: Outline your side characters and their roles in the story. Even secondary characters need clear motivations and arcs that tie into the main plot.
Character Arcs: Think about how each major character will grow or change throughout the story. A compelling character arc helps readers emotionally connect with the narrative.
5. Outline Key Scenes
To make your outline more specific, break the plot down into key scenes. These will be the building blocks of your novel.
Scene Summaries: Write a brief description of each key scene, noting the action, emotional beats, and character decisions. Each scene should serve a purpose in moving the plot forward or developing characters.
Character Goals for Each Scene: In every scene, your protagonist should have a clear goal. Are they trying to gain information, defeat an enemy, or form a new alliance? Their success or failure in each scene should further the narrative.
Transitions: Consider how each scene will transition smoothly into the next. Does one scene lead to an unexpected twist? Does a change in setting affect the mood or tone of the story?
6. Create a Chapter Breakdown
Once you have your key scenes mapped out, organize them into chapters.
Chapter One: This should be your hook. Introduce your protagonist and set the stage for the conflict. End with a cliffhanger or a compelling question that propels the reader into the next chapter.
Middle Chapters: These chapters should escalate tension, deepen character relationships, and introduce more complications. Think about pacing—some chapters might have quieter, introspective moments, while others should be action-packed.
Climax and Conclusion: Plan how you’ll build toward the climax, the final showdown, and how you’ll resolve the central conflict. Each chapter should build toward this moment of culmination.
7. Tie Up Loose Ends
As you map out the rest of the novel, make sure every plot thread has a purpose and will be resolved by the end. Avoid overly complex subplots that don’t serve the main story. After all, this outline is a map, and you don’t want to get lost.
Subplots: Subplots should intertwine with the main plot. Maybe a character’s side story ties into the protagonist’s journey or highlights an aspect of the theme.
Foreshadowing: Plant small details that will pay off later in the story. This adds layers to your novel and keeps readers engaged in the puzzle of your plot.
8. Review and Refine
Once you’ve completed your outline, step away for a bit. Take a break to clear your head. After that, return with fresh eyes and read over your outline. Does everything make sense? Are there any scenes that feel redundant or unnecessary? Refine your outline until you’re satisfied.
9. Get Ready to Write!
At the end of the day, your novel is outlined, the plot is mapped, and your characters are set. You now have a clear roadmap to follow as you write the novel. The beauty of outlining in one day is that you’ve broken down a massive undertaking into manageable chunks. You’ve structured the bones of the story, and now it’s time to breathe life into it with your words.
Final Thoughts

By focusing on the core elements of plot, character, and structure, you can create a detailed map that will guide you through the process of writing. Fun facts about the Author (that you might not find anywhere else)
As I share in a lot of my blog posts, I was born in a small town. My parents both worked their entire careers in the medical field. My mom was a registered nurse who spent the majority of her career in geriatric care (nursing homes.) Her love for others and the way she cares for them served as a great inspiration for Sadie’s mom in the new series. Interestingly enough, she has teased me for years about writing female characters who don’t have good relationships with their mothers. She would narrow her gaze and say, “Are you trying to tell me something?” To which I always replied with a laugh, “No, mom. If they got along great with everyone, including their parents, there would be no drama. And what story doesn’t have some drama??!!” So for my mom (who I have a great relationship with, by the way), I decided Sadie’s family drama could be with another member of the family and she and her parents would have a strong, supportive relationship.
Let’s see, I started going to a private, Christian school when I was in 7th grade. After my mom witnessed a drug deal in the parking lot of the school I was attending, she decided my sister and I needed to be educated elsewhere. She and my dad worked hard and sacrificed to afford the tuition so I worked hard in return and graduated co-valedictorian of my class at age 16. Lest anyone get the wrong impression that I’m super smart, I’ll stop you right there. I’d say I was of average intelligence possessing a gift for knowing what teachers liked to read in essays and worked very hard. I also had a knack for picking classes that helped me earn the credits necessary to accumulate for graduation. I didn’t go on to Harvard or anything like that. Instead, I went to a local community college and got my associates degree in secretarial science, specializing in the legal field. I won’t regale you with any more tales of my education journey other than to tell you I went back to college after I got married (at age 19) and had a baby (at age 20) to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management.
I’ve been married to my real world hero for 36 years now and we just have the one child, who is now married and has gifted me the sweetest little grandson ever. Both my daughter and her husband (and now their child) are only children so it makes for some interesting dynamics in their household.
For fun, I love to sing karaoke and perform every year in a variety show hosted by the neighborhood I live in. We do four shows in three nights and it is a way we build community. Perhaps if Sadie’s story continues, we’ll have a book that is centered around the show. I also have my red-black belt in taekwondo and would love some day to get my black belt. However, as it’s been a very long time since I’ve studied the martial art, I fear the time it would take me to get back up to speed and learn all I needed to in order to achieve that might not be in the cards. Although, one never knows what the future holds! With starting piano lessons when I was in elementary school, I loved playing and my initial dream was to be a concert pianist and play at Carnegie Hall. Being a realist, I knew the likelihood of that was slim to none and I enjoy eating to much to be a starving artist (hence why I still have a day job while pursuing my writing career 😉) Being a wife, mom, employee, and student left little time for such things, but I’m happy to report that my husband encouraged me to procure a keyboard in December of 2024 that has the “real feel” keys and I’ve set aside time a couple times a week to begin playing again. It does my soul good to hear the music again.

Behind the Scenes: The Inspiration for Shadowed Skies Every story has an origin, and Shadowed Skies was no exception. This novel was born out of a mix of inspiration, personal experience, and a love for dystopian adventure with a touch of the fantastical. Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes to explore how this story came to life—from its first spark of an idea to the fully realized world of the Evol-humans.
The Spark of an Idea The first whispers of Shadowed Skies emerged during NaNoWriMo 2019. At the time, life was a whirlwind of responsibilities, and most of my writing sessions took place in the carpool lane while waiting for my kids. It was during those stolen moments that River and Delene’s world began to take shape. I wanted to write a story that blended high-stakes survival with the emotional depth of identity, freedom, and resistance.
Wings, Science, and the Ethics of Experimentation I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of science and ethics, particularly the unintended consequences of genetic experimentation. What if human beings were engineered for a purpose—only to be discarded when that purpose no longer suited their creators? This question became the foundation of Shadowed Skies and the plight of the Evol-humans. Designed as super-soldiers with avian DNA, they were meant to be resilient, capable of thriving in extreme environments. But as history often repeats, humanity fears what it does not understand. The same people who created the Evol-humans turned on them, leading to their persecution, imprisonment, and fight for survival.
A World Shaped by Dystopian Influences I’ve always been drawn to dystopian fiction, from classics like 1984 and Brave New World to modern YA series like The Hunger Games and The Darkest Minds. These stories highlight resilience in the face of oppression, a theme that resonated deeply with me. However, I wanted to add a unique twist—rather than a purely tech-driven future, Shadowed Skies introduces an evolutionary shift, where biology itself becomes both a weapon and a weakness.
Survival in the Wild Much of Shadowed Skies is set in rugged, mountainous landscapes, inspired by the breathtaking wilderness of Utah. I wanted to capture the raw beauty and danger of the wild—how nature can be both a sanctuary and a merciless force. River, one of the main characters, has learned to live off the land, a skill that not only defines his character but also plays a crucial role in the survival of those like him.
Characters with Heart and Struggle At its core, this story is about two people who refuse to be caged—literally and figuratively. River, haunted by loss and determined to stay hidden, must confront his past and decide if he will fight for more than just his own survival. Delene, who has suffered unimaginable losses, refuses to let fear break her spirit. Their journey is one of trust, resilience, and ultimately, hope.
