Sound… Writing Wednesday

Did you participate in last week’s #WritingWednesday post? It was all about going back in time. If you haven’t posted your response, click HERE so you can do that now. Then, make sure you check in here ~ every Wednesday ~ for the latest #WritingWednesday writing prompt! Now, back to today’s regularly scheduled post…

Remember, #WritingWednesday is an EASY, STRESS-FREE, weekly writing challenge.

  • Read the writing prompt below,
  • Spend 5 minutes writing (in your own voice or the voice of a character you’re writing) whatever comes to mind,
  • DON’T EDIT what you write! IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT!

The goal is 5 minutes of creativity.

Today, I’m writing in the voice of Tanja, a character in my current WIP.

Today’s writing prompt:

Describe the most beautiful sound you have ever heard

When a loved one dies, you don’t expect to hear there voice again. Sure, you might have recordings, home movies, or saved voicemails, but those aren’t the same. Over time, the recordings become distorted and grainy. Nothing can replace the sound of their voice as they sit across the table from you, sipping on tea and telling you about their life or even just their day.

My grandmother’s voice had been lost to me for over three years. Lost forever, as far as I knew. Only by a miracle was I able to speak to her again.

The miracle of my bloodline.

Some call it voodoo, others witchcraft, and still others call it the black arts or devil worship. It isn’t devil worship or the black arts. It isn’t voodoo, nor do we do anything to harm others. Maybe it is witchcraft, I’m not really sure. All I know is that it is a gift. Its a gift to me and to those I can help bring closure.

There is nothing like the sound of relief… joy… and comfort you hear from someone who is finally able to say goodbye to a loved one who was lost to soon.

Today’s writing prompt:

If you could go back in time exactly 10 years and give yourself some advice, what would you tell yourself?

Never tell. Keep your powers hidden.

You see, as a psychokinetic I’m valuable, or dangerous, I guess it depends on who you ask. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have my powers, but then again, I don’t remember much from my early childhood. At first it was small things; moving a glass across the kitchen table, turning out the lights without touching the switch, or making my parents or friends think someone has tapped them on the shoulder from across the room.

At first, my parents played it off as parlor tricks, sleight of hand, magic. They weren’t sure where I was learning it, but they seemed impressed. At the very least, they were entertained. I let them believe what they needed to believe, that none of it was real.

I should have kept that secret.

As I’ve gotten older, my powers have gotten stronger as did my ego. When other metamorphs were discovered, I should have stopped using my powers. I should have realized the danger they put me in. I was careless and people I loved got hurt. That’s when they found me. That’s when my life changed.

Write a Thank You Letter to Someone!

To all the kids I once knew…

Thank you, for laughing at me when my pants were just a little to short or the knees were worn with holes. Thank you, for whispering when I passed in the hall and taping ‘kick me’ signs to my back. Thank you, for turning your back when I was getting beaten in the locker room then pretending not to notice the tears as my mascara ran down my face.

Thank you, for all these things and more, because you are the reason I’m standing taller, stronger, and so much more powerful here today. You are the reason I laid down my fear, my frustration, my doubt, and picked up my mother’s sword and claimed what was rightfully mine. You are the reason I speak to the dead, raise them from their eternal slumber, and punish the living.

You are the reason I’m coming!

In honor of Mother’s Day, which was this past Sunday, I’m writing in my own voice today.

Today’s writing prompt:

What is/was your mom like?

My mother is courageous. She takes risks and lives life to the fullest.

She is independent and strong, but also knows how to lean on other when she needs help, and she raised me to be the same. She is supportive and encouraging. She is giving and helpful, sometimes to a fault.

She has a stubborn streak that runs in my family. Oh boy, is she ever stubborn. If she is upset, she holds a grudge and sometimes has a hard time admitting she was wrong.

She is one of the smartest women I know. She loves learning new things and is a lifelong student.

Before retiring, she was a nurse. She is still a nurse at heart. I don’t think you ever loose that. If someone is hurt or in need, she has to help.

She gives the very best of herself, no matter who she is with.

My mother is love.

She was my first teacher, as all mothers are. She taught me right from wrong, good from bad, and how to stand up for myself, my loved ones, and what I believe.

I love you mom.

Today I am writing in the voice of Sydney, a character in one of my current ‘WIP’ manuscripts.

Today’s writing prompt:

What do the clothes you are wearing right now say about you?

I’ve been in the hospital for a little over a month and its discharge day. It felt so good to toss that hospital gown on the floor and slip into my well-worn jeans. My handler at Operation Atlas had my clothes washed, he had to, they were covered in ash. To be honest, he wanted to throw them away but I wouldn’t let him. Every rip and every hole signify a job well done. I’ve earned those badges.

So to answer your question, what do the clothes I’m wearing say about me, that’s easy… They say I’m tough, courageous, and not someone you should mess with.

Glass Houses- Writing Wednesday

Then, make sure you check in here ~ every Wednesday ~ for the latest #WritingWednesday writing prompt! Now, back to today’s regularly scheduled post…

The goal is 5 minutes of creativity.

Today I am writing in the voice of Ethan, a character in one of my current ‘WIP’ manuscripts.

Today’s writing prompt:

Finish this phrase: ‘People who live in glass houses should not…’

I’m supposed to say, ‘throw stones,’ right? Whatever. I couldn’t care less what people in glass houses do. Do whatever you want, just don’t judge me when I do what I want too.

That’s the problem with society, too many judgmental, arrogant, knobs who think they know better than everyone else. It’s why I left the rat race. I was at the top of my field. People all around the world knew of me, the man who founded Operation Atlas. But, no one knew my name, Ethan Atlas. No one knew what I looked like, no I had made sure of that. No one knew anything about me, why I started Operation Atlas in the first place, or why I eventually left.

Operation Atlas was never meant to be a means for controlling those with power. It was never meant to become a prison for the ones who wouldn’t conform. No. No, Operation Atlas was meant to be a sanctuary for those who were different, like me. A place we could go to avoid the judgments of others. A place we could go to escape from the hate crimes that seemed to follow us. That is until the government weaseled their way in. Good old Uncle Sam, that’s what they used to say, right? Good old Uncle Sam got his hands around my neck and there was no turning back. That’s why I had to leave. That’s why they had to believe I had died. It was the only way to get out. The only way to protect myself so that one day I could come back and take it all back.

That time is coming.

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Set in a futuristic dystopian where society is governed by a council of vampires and lycanthropes, selection students are sheltered and raised in a deceptively utopian world. Strict rules are imposed to control population growth, education, and even personal interactions with other members of the Sector, all in the name of safety. When ‘A’ comes of age, she like all youth throughout Sector C and her selection classmates aren’t sent out into the world to find jobs, make money and lead happy carefree lives. They are forced to endure the rigorous physical and mental testing of Selection Week before choosing their destiny or being forced into a fate far worse. Those that make it out alive are announced as sector residence, given a position within the society, and allotted all the privileges of their chosen “culture.” However, when your only choices are vampirism, lycanthropy, breeder, blood donor, or banishment to the Wastelands, what choice do you really have? Suspenseful, intense, passionate, and awash in paranormal delights, Sector C captures the enchantment and mysteries of the supernatural world and the power of friendship.

For she is the first human known to have both vampire and lycanthrope blood flowing through her veins. I have always been creative, be it art, theatre, film – anything but singing – you don’t want to hear that! I earned her bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Military Science from EMU where I spent most of my time either on stage, rappelling down buildings, or working one of three jobs. After college, I moved to Los Angeles, like so many other want-to-be actors, in pursuit of my dreams. I worked to pay the bills… but my love was acting and I was actually somewhat successful, mostly in commercials and independent films and I had a great time doing it.

In 2008, after some major life changes, I self-published her first book PRIVATE WORDS UNSPOKEN, a compilation of poetry. Since then, my dreams have gotten bigger and I would like to think my storytelling ability has gotten better. I have done everything from secretarial work to business development to being the Director of a private preschool. I have fired an M16, jumped out of a C130, and given birth – TWICE – but I always return to my art.

Though I’ll forever be a Michigan girl at heart, I now live in the South with my husband and two beautiful children. If I’m not working on my latest story, you can find me lounging with a good book, playing with my kids, or indulging in my unhealthy addiction to Starbucks coffee.

ASK THE AUTHOR

Since I’m participating in my own series blog tour, I thought it might be fun to have a Q&A. So, if you have any questions for me about the books, my writing style, or just being an author, let me know in the comments below. I’d love to start a dialogue.
