Here come the ZOMBIES!!!

The other day, I was asked, ‘The Apocalypse is Coming, What Do You Stock Up On?

An apocalypse, taken from the Greek language, actually means a disclosure of knowledge, hidden from humanity in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception, i.e., a lifting of the veil or revelation. However, today we think of an apocalypse in reference to the End Times, or the end of the world.

Considering the question at hand, I was torn between writing about what I would stock up on if someone was going to bestow unto me information – a disclosure of knowledge… or writing about a Zombie Apocalypse. Obviously based on the title of my blog I have chosen the Zombie Apocalypse approach.

However, I did feel that the ‘disclosure of knowledge’ concept deserved further review as well. So here it is in a nut shell…

Not knowing if the information/knowledge would make me happy, sad, angry, hurt, frustrated, excited, or any other emotion one could feel when learning something… I had no idea what to stock up on. So this was my final list:

  • Tissue (in case I cry)
  • Chocolate (in case I find myself and my children locked in a closet and scared.)
  • Tennis Shoes (in case a fight ensues – yes I said tennis shoes – you need comfortable feet if you’re going to fight.)
  • Paper and Pen (in case the information leads to a creative outburst and I feel the need to write or draw.)
  • Ice (Because you always need ice.)

Okay… now onto the Zombies…

In today’s society, when we hear apocalypse we think of the End Times… or the end of the world. So, because I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead, I love reading and writing YA novels, and because Zombies are just plain cool… Other than making sure my family was with me, this is what I would stock up on if the Zombie Apocalypse really was upon us:

FOOD:

  • Bottled Water
  • Canned foods – to include vegetables and pre-cooked meats
  • MREs (Military pre packaged ready to eat meals)
  • P-nut Butter (good for protein and yummy in my tummy)
  • Powdered Milk – Yes, I would still make my kids drink their milk!
  • Vitamins – Hello, most likely we’re going to run out of food at some point, and vitamins are essential

WEAPONS:

  • Wooden Chair Legs – They can easily be sharpened to a point to be used as a stake – Stake them in the eye and through the brain!
  • Knives, axes, pretty much anything with a blade – if I need to explain this one, you are not even close to ready for the Zombie Apocalypse.
  • Matches and lighters – Zombies can be killed if set on fire – just make sure you have room to get away so they don’t grab you and kill you in the process.
  • Shot Gun, Handgun, bullets (Yeah, I think this is pretty obvious)

CLOTHING: (Just the basics)

  • A couple pair of underwear (in a backpack)
  • Clean socks
  • Good hiking boots
  • Comfortable clothes I can move quickly in

OTHER:

  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Walkie Talkies with extra batteries
  • Rope
  • Wire

I left one open… just in case

Comment below and tell me; the apocalypse is coming, what do you stock up on?

Supernatural – Paranormal – Preternatural, OH MY!

YA Fiction

As a YA Author of novels that contain vampires, shape-shifters, witches, fairies (not the Tinkerbell type), and so many other un-natural beings I have often been asked the following questions:

‘What is the difference between supernatural, paranormal, and preternatural?’ and ‘Which of these categories do you write in?’

Well the simple answer is this: They are pretty much interchangeable! OR ARE THEY?

Below are the “official” definitions – followed by some examples of character types I, as an author, would put into each category.

___________________________________________________________

Supernatural… Attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature

Super: above; over; beyond     |     natural: existing in, or caused by nature

* Angels * Vampires * Werewolves (and other were-animals) * Witches * Warlocks * Wizards *

___________________________________________________________

Paranormal… Denoting events or phenomena such as telekinesis or clairvoyance that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding

Para: beyond     |     normal: usual; typical; standard

* Zombies * Vampires * Necromancers * Time travelers *

___________________________________________________________

Preternatural… Beyond what is normal or natural – existing outside of nature (very unusual in a way that doesn’t seem natural)

Preter: This is not a prefixe that I could find a definition for, but it seems it means: beyond   |     natural: existing in, or caused by nature

* Zombies * Werewolves (and other were-animals) * Vampires * Witches * Necromancers *

___________________________________________________________

OK, so maybe that didn’t help sort out the difference after all. A lot of the examples tend to fall into multiple categories, at least for me.

So, what are your thoughts? Comment below and tell me what you think the differences are and what types of unnatural beings fall into each of the categories!

Behind Locked Doors: No Man Left Behind

zombies

The sky was dark… The water was cold… They were fully submerged near the end of the dock waiting for the right moment to make their attack. In silent mode he gave his orders through hand movements and signals they had practiced a thousand times.

But still a young, nervous, and over excited recruit moved to soon. Being the leader he quickly moved to stop him, but it was too late. The young boy had thrown himself into the hands of the enemy, and there was no way for them to save him now. They could only wait.

Moments later they could hear them feeding of the young recruit as he screamed in pain and fear. He had always preached ‘No man left behind’ to his unit, and today would be no different. He gave the order to strike, and twenty men dressed in black wet suits quickly scaled the end of the dock and appeared as if from nowhere before the hungry beasts.

They didn’t have time to think. They had to utilize their skills and training without question or doubt. He showed no fear, not allowing his men to see on his face what he was feeling inside – terror. In seconds he was on their leader. A quick slice of his blade and the zombie went down… Three more before his men even had a chance to react. Then five with the dagger he kept in a pocket on his right leg. Quickly the enemy dwindled.

When all was done his unit stood before him, tired and worn, but his focus was not on them. He went to that young recruit and holding him in his arms he looked deep into his eyes. They both knew what had to be done, for he had been infected, and soon would begin the change.

The young boy just nodded and closed his eyes. With a heavy heart and a firm grip he twisted his head snapping his neck. Everything went quiet.

His unit stood there at attention as the Captain explained their next mission. Expressionless… Fearless… Determined… Brave… He knew that this fight was worth the losses they might have. For one life, to save thousands was acceptable. His life to save thousands was the least he could give.

An hour later they were suited up… sitting side by side… listening to the rattling of the C130… and preparing for the jump. The drop zone was a small clearing surrounded by trees on three sides and a river bed of rocks, fallen trees, and shallow water on the fourth. He had never made such a dangerous landing, but fear wasn’t something be believed in.

Standing in the door his heart began to race with exhilaration and excitement. He was ready! The light turned green and he stepped out without even a moment of hesitation. Within seconds he hit the ground… rolled onto his back… pulled the handles… and his chute was off. Thirty seconds later he had found cover in the thick tree-line.

They dug in and waited out the night. But before the sun could rise… THEY came! Like death in the night they creep through the trees seeking… hunting… feeding… By morning more than half of his unit was dead, and of the rest all but two had been infected. Like the dead themselves they feed off of the corpses of their fallen comrades.

Of the two still alive one was mutilated so badly it was only a matter of time before death took him. But he still remained. He stood tall ready for the fight to come. Until the inevitable end, he remained focused… determined… strong…
