The Whole Backstage

Dates: April 17-26, 2026

Performed at: The Whole Backstage Theatre (1120 Rayburn Ave/Dot Moore Way, Guntersville, AL 35976)

Synopsis: In Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the dysfunctional but wealthy Pollitt family gathers to celebrate aging patriarch Big Daddy’s birthday. But there is more to this gathering than a family reunion– Big Daddy, unbeknown to him, is dying of cancer. He is still to decide which of his sons will inherit the estate. His options include favorite son Brick, who drinks himself into oblivion in order to bear the desires of his determined wife, Maggie, or his less-favored son Gooper, his fertile wife Mae, and their “no-neck monster” children. While sensuous Maggie “the cat” tries to work her wiles to secure a future for them, Brick spirals deeper into despair, crippled by both physical pain and emotional loss. Lurking under every practiced interaction between the Pollitts is an ulterior motive, under every smile, a challenge, and under every statement, the spectre of mendacity. For the Pollitts, the truth is as hazy as the late summer sun in Mississippi, and sometimes the only way to find it is to journey through the lies.

ABOUT ME:

What Theatre Taught Me About Real Estate

Theatre has taught me so much over the years — how to listen, how to improvise, how to stay calm when the curtain doesn’t go up quite on time. But maybe the biggest lesson is this: every production works best when everyone knows their role and trusts the process.

Real estate works the same way. Behind every successful sale or purchase, there’s a team of people — agents, lenders, inspectors, clients — all working together toward a common goal. It’s about communication, collaboration, and a shared vision. And when it all comes together, it feels a lot like opening night — exciting, rewarding, and just a little bit magical.

So, whether your next big project involves a new home or a new show, remember: teamwork makes the dream work.

Experience Dracula and Frankenstein Live in Huntsville

DRACULA: LORD OF THE VAMPIRES and FRANKENSTEIN: THE UNTOLD STORY are both adaptations from Evil Cheez Productions, starring some of your ECP favorites, and both are rated PG, so they’re safe for the kiddies! (Like, maybe don’t bring your toddler, but otherwise you should be good to go!)

The twin titans of terror, the two most famous (or is that “infamous”) names in horror history! Two performances, staged as old-fashioned radio plays…but which one will you see? We don’t know, and we won’t know until showtime! For the special matinee showing, the audience gets to vote on which of the two plays they’d rather see!

Dracula: The Lord of the Vampires

Everybody and their kid sister knows the story of Dracula…but you’ve never seen it like this! The Brides have expanded characters! Renfield is a woman! And they get rid of Jonathan Harker, the most useless character in all of literature! (Okay, it was actually the playwright who did that, but it’s worth the price of admission just to see Harker “bite” it!) Oh, and the vampire Count meets the man who revealed his identity to the world—Bram Stoker!

Performed as an old-fashioned radio play, but with the audience in the room, DRACULA: LORD OF THE VAMPIRES is the perfect spooky treat! Rated PG, so it won’t give the kiddies nightmares.

(Can you tell the writer doesn’t like Jonathan Harker?)

Frankenstein: The Untold Story

It’s the classic story you know and love, but with an Evil Cheez twist! Victor Frankenstein sought to create life, and instead created a Monster! But was the scientist’s hubris to blame…or his lack of empathy for the being he’d fashioned?

Performed as an old-fashioned radio play─but with the audience sitting in the recording studio!─FRANKENSTEIN: THE UNTOLD STORY reveals why it is the Monster ends up sharing the name of the mad scientist, and depicts the real-life scenario that resulted in 18-year-old Mary Shelley writing one of the greatest horror stories in human history.

Rated PG. Perfect spooky fun for the entire family.

MEET THE CAST

Step into the shadows and meet the extraordinary performers bringing two of literature’s most enduring Gothic tales to life. Our staged readings of Frankenstein and Dracula celebrate the timeless power of these dark classics while showcasing the incredible talent of our local theatre community. Here, you’ll get to know the cast members who will give voice, heart, and humanity to the monsters, heroes, and haunted souls at the center of Mary Shelley’s and Bram Stoker’s masterpieces all through the theatre adaptations of Wayne Miller, Evil Cheez Productions’ founder.

Angel Baker Coleman

Angel is thrilled to be accepted on the stage alongside the incredibly talented actors that make up Evil Cheez. Her acting credits include Marjorie Baverstock in Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 and Elsa in The Sound of Music. Angel wishes you to call her dad, as she’s now in a cult.

Brett Richardson

Brett Richardson is an actor, writer, and political activist originally from the Shoals area who loves living in Huntsville (but not fighting the traffic) and working with Evil Cheez.

Byron Turner

Byron is an Alabama native and has been involved in local theater on and off for 20 years. He has been a part of multiple productions for Theatre Huntsville, including Clybourne Park, Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged), The Eight: Reindeer Monologues, Radio Golf, God of Carnage, Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll, and The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. He was also an assistant director of TH’s production of Stick-Fly and directed TH’s production of Mountaintop.

Greg Branham

Greg Branham is an elementary school music teacher. He has been a part of Evil Cheez for 10 years.

Greg is a man of few words…

Jason Summer

Jason discovered his love for community theater in 2010 and, other than a year here or there, has been acting ever since.  Throughout the last 15 years, he has been fortunate to establish long-term friendships with his fellow actors, directors, and techs. He is absolutely looking forward to working with many of them again during this run of Dracula and Frankenstein.  Jason hopes you enjoy these productions and hopes the camaraderie and connections between those involved are apparent as the stories are brought to life.

Jeremy Jerome Woods

Screenshot

Jeremy Woods is thrilled to be part of this production. While playing fun characters as Dracula and Fritz (in Dracula and Frankenstein, respectively) he is also serving as a Co-Director. “What can I say… I love theatre and I love Evil Cheez”. He thanks his Husband and Son for the love, jokes, and support. He also thanks his Mom and Dad for making him.

Enjoy the show!

Jonathan Bain

Jonathan is a leasing agent by day and an actor by night. Jonathan has been acting in community theater for 14 years, and some of his favorite roles have been Ty from Sordid Lives and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come in A Christmas Carol. Dracula was his very first stage performance, and he is THRILLED to bring Jonathan Harker back to life (for now. )

Joy Whitt

Joy is an actress, writer, and barbecue cook. She loves doing shows with Evil Cheez, Theatre Huntsville, Bank Street Players… and anyone else who will have her in their show! Staged readings are just about as much fun as a full production, and she is so happy to be contributing to some Halloween feels with Frankenstein and Dracula!

Juan E. Bedolla

Juan is an animation director and producer. He is new to Cheez and to theater in general, but makes up for his lack of experience with eager enthusiasm and unearned confidence.

Nina Soden

Nina Soden is no stranger to the stage—or to keeping life dramatic in all the best ways. She’s appeared in and/or directed productions ranging from Dracula to Arsenic and Old Lace (because nothing says “fun night out” like fangs or poisoned elderberry wine). When she’s not wrangling actors, she’s wrangling her children… her husband… her clients and homes across North Alabama as a Realtor®—and yes, if you buy a home through her thanks to theatre, she’ll donate part of her commission right back to the local theatre company of your choice. Nina also hosts The Home Stretch, a weekly podcast, where real estate meets real talk (and the occasional caffeine-fueled monologue). Whether she’s behind the mic, on stage, hanging out with her family, or handing over house keys, Nina somehow manages to keep the drama where it belongs—on the stage—mostly.

Sarah Foltz

Sarah Foltz is excited to perform with Evil Cheez! Sarah is a recent UAH grad and is excited to be getting involved with theater in Huntsville. Sarah previously performed at Masquerade Theater in Union City, TN. Sarah also enjoys performing improv.

Tanja Lewis Miller

Tanja Lewis Miller, aka Queen Cheez, is super excited to bring back two of ECP’s favorites to usher in the spooky season and to revisit her some of her favorite characters, especially Alice Renfield. She sends all the love to her hubby and her Cheez family. And a special thanks to all of you, the Cheez supporters, for without you, Cheez wouldn’t be Cheez!

MEET THE CREW

While the actors bring the characters to life on stage, it’s the crew behind the scenes who make the magic possible. From lights and sound to staging and direction, every detail is carefully crafted to immerse the audience in the world of Frankenstein and Dracula. Their creativity, dedication, and teamwork ensure that each moment flows seamlessly, allowing the stories to shine. We are proud to recognize the talented individuals working tirelessly behind the scenes—because without them, the show could not go on.

Directors: Wayne Miller & Jeremy Jerome Woods

WJR Miller (“Wayne” to his friends and family; what his enemies call him wouldn’t be fit for inclusion here) is the owner/founder of EVIL CHEEZ PRODUCTIONS, an independent theatrical company, and has written, directed, produced (and occasionally performed in) over two-dozen stage plays, running the gamut from Horror and True Crime (his specialties) to musicals, children’s plays, comedies, and even the historical biography of a murderous shark. LETTERS FROM THE DIRECTORS

As a child, the stories of Dracula and Frankenstein always intrigued me. The Idea that a writer could unlock doors in his mind and find these characters living and thriving was always amazing and felt just a bit out of reach. As a teenager, I was lucky enough to meet a writer/director who could do just that. This same published visionary wrote the show you are about to see. He took these already established characters and forged a new path. One that can ensure their survival for yet another generation. May they continue to enrich and haunt our dreams. Enjoy the show. ~Jeremy Jerome Woods

It sometimes surprises folks to learn that my adaptations of Dracula and Frankenstein are my two least favorite scripts that I’ve written, given how much I adore those characters and those books (and the thousands of movies that have been made about them). But it’s precisely because I hold the source material in such high esteem that I feel this way. These two works, you understand, are only adaptations. In my mind they are not 100% mine, and in my mind they can never measure up to the novels written by Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley, respectively (nor those thousands of movies made about them). Still, in order for the stories to be brought to the stage, adaptations must happen, and several have. Some of them I hold in the same high regard, or close to it, as the original works. Others…not so much. I saw writing these scripts, then, as a way to craft the adaptations I personally always wanted to see on the stage. If Stoker and Shelley can’t write their own play versions (granted, I haven’t asked them; anybody got a Ouija board handy?) then the next best thing, I figured, would be to do it myself. I tried to create something the pair of them would approve of…or at least not hate too much.

I stand upon the shoulders of giants. Fortunately, their creations, their stories, lose little of their grandiosity when envisioned and interpreted by lesser talents. (And hey, concerning some of those other adaptations I mentioned, t’weren’t that hard to o’erleap the bars they set, if you catch my meaning.) I hope you enjoy these tales, then. They aren’t as good as the originals─no adaptation could be─but I daresay they’ll manage.

Least favorites? Yeah. But I’m still pretty dang proud of ‘em. ~WJR Miller

Theatre Huntsville is proud to announce its premiere Studio Series production, presented at the Studio Theatre at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore is a play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses and why we only wear black. Based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman.

Funny, compelling…Brought down the house…but [the play] is not a comedy: A story about black cowboy boots becomes a sad tale of being underappreciated in a relationship; a tale of two women shopping for their wedding outfits ends bittersweetly; and the recollection of a new bra is a quiet testament to a women’s search for dignity while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. —NY Times.

Finding Inspiration in the least likely place!

My university degree is in the performing arts; a dual major in Theatre & Communications. Acting has been my passion for a very long time. After college, I moved to Los Angeles, like so many other hopeful young actors, to make a go of it. I booked a few low budget films, a dozen commercials, and a handful of indie-films, but my big break never happened.

Eventually, some life changes took me away from Los Angeles and my dreams of becoming a professional actor. Don’t get me wrong, I did NOT give up on acting. I still do the occasional play, every now and then, when I can make my real job line up with rehearsals. Although, it isn’t the same.

I’ve been away from Los Angeles, and my dreams, for over 15 years now and I still find myself overcome with sadness every time the Academy Awards are on.

How’s that for honesty?!

Truth be told, I have a great life and a family I adore. Plus, I’ve been lucky enough to have found other artistic outlets that bring me true happiness; theatre of course, but also writing.

Last night, while I sat with my son while he watched an episode of Liv and Maddie (Season 2 Episode 2) I found inspiration in something the father said to Maddie, “Just because you can’t do something you love, doesn’t mean you have to stop loving it.”

For the last 15 years, I’ve felt guilty for missing Los Angeles. As if leaving my dreams behind meant that I had to give up that passion. I felt like the ‘move’ was supposed to be easier and that there was something wrong with me because I wasn’t able to just let go of the goals I had been working toward for so long. Last night I realized that it’s ok to hang on to that passion, those goals, those dreams. It’s okay to embrace them not only through theatre but also through other forms of art such as writing.

So, whatever your passion is, know that you don’t ever have to give it up – not fully.

AMAZON DESCRIPTION:
When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in “girl hours” and has no time for the women’s probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time, attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications; Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.

My 2 Cents:
This is a beautiful play about one of the first women who worked in the field of astronomy. The reader (or audience if seeing the play life) get to see how she balances, or fails to balance, life while still pursuing her dream of reaching for the stars. It is intelligent, artistic, heart wrenching, and emotionally moving.

I started reading this play with no knowledge of what it was about other than that it had to do with female astronomers, or ‘computers’ as they were called back in the early 1900s. I was happy to find that it was not only beautifully written with humor woven throughout the story, but it avoided the typical traps stories like this often fall into such as only focusing on the negative aspects of women in what is considered a “man’s world”, over dramatizing work and home life balance… or lack thereof, or not sharing all aspects of the story such as family/science/and love… there is room for it all and I believe that Gunderson successfully brought it all together.

CHARACTERS: Through her writing, Gunderson brings to life each of the five characters in such a beautiful way. They each have their own history, their own desires, and their own goals. Life ends up differently for each of them, and as with our lead character, Henrietta, they all experience

  • Henrietta Leavitt
  • Margaret Leavitt
  • Peter Shaw
  • Annie Cannon
  • Williamina Fleming

APPEARANCE: it’s a plain colored cover, in this case blue, with black lettering, typical of a Dramatists Play Service playbook. I personally prefer this style of cover for plays because I want the writing to tell me what the characters look like, rather than an image on the cover.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:
“I used to think that to be truly alive I needed answers. I needed to know. But all this does not in fact need to be known, does it? We do. Because the real point… is seeing something bigger. And knowing we’re a small part of it, if we’re lucky. In the end that is a life well-lived.” ~ Henrietta in Silent Sky

AMAZON DESCRIPTION:
Olivia and Gabe are moving into their first apartment together. They’ve just packed up all of their belongings and driven halfway across the country, to start a new life together in Chicago. Their moving day doesn’t go exactly as planned, though, and things become slightly more complicated when all of their parents show up to help! Can a two-bedroom apartment contain all of the love, laughs, worry and wisdom that’s about to happen?

This brand-new comedy from the author of Nana’s Naughty Knickers takes a generational look at relationships, and how sometimes parents are passing their best lessons on to their children without even meaning to. Funny and touching, this one will make you laugh out loud and fall in love all over again.

Buy it HERE on Amazon!

The Critical Points:
I don’t usually review plays, but this one just spoke to me! Things My Mother Taught Me has something for everyone! It’s your typical family drama full of unexpected encounters, comical misunderstands, and drama… lots of drama!

WARNING… SPOILER ALERT… WARNING… SPOILER ALERT… WARNING

WRITING: Katherine Disavino, author of Seasonal Allergies and Nana’s Naughty Knickers knocks it out of the park with Things My Mother Taught Me. It is a quick, easy read full of laughs.

STORY: Olivia and Gabe, a 20-something couple move from New York to Chicago… Gabe has hidden an engagement ring in the cushion of his favorite chair, the chair Olivia hates! He has also invited both of their parents to come down for the weekend, so they can share in the excitement of the surprise proposal he is planning. Things don’t go as planned, the moving truck is stolen (along with the $20K ring), and the engagement is cancelled. However, DiSavino doesn’t let it end there… they all live happily ever after when a plastic, cereal box ring gives Gabe hope and Max, the Polish building super, comes to the rescue and saves the day.

CHARACTERS: DiSavino pulls together a beautiful ensemble cast of characters in ‘Things My Mother Taught Me’.

  • OLIVIA KEEGAN – late 20s; energetic; neat; slightly OCD; an architect.
  • KAREN KEEGAN – late 50s-60s; Olivia’s mother.
  • CARTER KEEGAN – 60s; Olivia’s father.
  • GABE LAWSON – late 20s; a writer; good-natured.
  • LYDIA LAWSON – late 50s-60s; Gabe’s mother.
  • WYATT LAWSON – 60s; Gabe’s father.
  • MAX MIROWSKI – late 50s; Polish accent; building super; may be played by a man or woman.

APPEARANCE: The cover is cute, but when it comes to theatre scripts, I prefer a plain colored playbook. I don’t like to be shown a photo of the characters, instead I like to use my own imagination to figure out what they look like.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE:

2013 New Year’s Resolutions

Okay, we are 8 days into the new year and I have finally decided what I want my New Year’s Resolutions to be! NO IT IS NOT TO LATE. Actually I believe that it is never to late to come up with a New Year’s Resolution. The thing is, if I had just made some up on New Years Eve just so that I could start them on January 1st I would never have kept them. I would have picked things like…

  1. Give up Chocolate – GIVE ME A BREAK! There is no way in HELL that would have stuck more than a few hours.
  2. Workout Daily – HELLO? Who has time for a daily workout, unless you count the constant back and forth walking while working.

So, now that we are eight (8) days into the New Year I have come up with a list of resolutions that actually mean something to me, and because of that I think that I will be able to keep them.

  1. Love my husband better!
  2. Spend more one on one time with my children!
  3. Learn to cook – I am taking a once a week cooking lesson with my mother-in-law
  4. Join Hot Yoga! I loved yoga back in college – I’m not going to mention how long ago that was, but I am hoping to enjoy it again.
  5. Read more, just for fun!
  6. Get back into Theatre! I have my first audition (IN YEARS) on January 20th and 21st!
  7. Produce a show – Theatre of course! I have a meeting next week to discuss doing this in the next 6 months at the local university.
  8. WRITE WRITE WRITE! I want to finish book two (2) of the Blood Angel series – If I ever get it back from the editor.
  9. Produce a film – My husband is an AMAZING author, and he wrote this short film… years ago… and I would love to help him tweak it and put it together… maybe get a few hits online…. We shall see.

Okay, that is a pretty long list, and it really is more of a list of goals but I think that is okay. These are my goals/resolutions for 2013. Some are short-term but most of them are long-term.

So, what are your 2013 New Year’s Resolutions/Goals? If you didn’t make any why not do it now?!

Summer Then & Now

Summer time used to be a time of running around in the sprinklers and riding my bike for hours before finally running into the house truly exhausted and collapsing on the living room floor. Mom would tell me to clean up for dinner and my sister and I would lay there laughing.

Then summer became a time of sleep overs with friends, hanging out at the mall and dating.

When college came around summer meant more school, working full-time and producing theatre with a group of friends, and of course dating!

Now, summer is better than I could have ever imagined it to be. I’m a mom do I finally get to ride my bike and take walks again. I get to run through the sprinklers with my kids and spray them with the hose while the run around screaming and laughing. We eat Popsicles on the porch and sing in the back yard. Then when the day is over we can collapse in the floor of the living room in laughter. Sure I still have to work full-time but somehow it doesn’t seem as tiring as it used to. Now I just enjoy the time I have with my family and I don’t worry about the rest!

That’s what makes my summer so special. What do you love about summer?
