Did Anyone… by Nina Soden

Image by Johannes Plenio from Pixabay

Did anyone ever tell you how wonderful you really are? Did anyone every tell you how deep your emotions are?

Did anyone ever show you all that you can do? Did anyone ever show you that you can be somebody too?

Did anyone ever tell you how special you make them feel? Did anyone ever tell you how you always seem so real?

Did anyone ever show you how to let your feelings go? Did anyone ever show you how to let your feelings show?

Did anyone ever tell you what they think of you? Did anyone ever tell you that you make each day feel new?

All these things to me are clear. All these things, just because you are near!

Dedicated to my baby girl and little boy. Mommy loves you.

Week 24 – #WritingWednesday Challenge

Today is the 24th Edition of #WritingWednesday!!!

Remember, #WritingWednesday is an EASY, STRESS-FREE, weekly writing challenge.

  • Read the writing prompt below,
  • Spend 5 minutes writing (in your own voice or the voice of a character you’re writing) whatever comes to mind,
  • DON’T EDIT what you write! IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT!

The goal is 5 minutes of creativity.

Today I am writing in the voice of Austin, a character in the novel I’m currently writing.

Today’s writing prompt:

Write about a souvenir you have bought or received!

Let me start by saying I don’t journal and I think this is a waste of time. I work, a lot. Usually seven days a week and a lot of double shifts. That doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for souvenir shopping, as I’m sure you can imagine.

Although, I do camp. I suppose that’s something. There aren’t many shops out in the woods, or any for that matter, but there are people. I meet some interesting people out in the woods. One overly nice young lady I met, April was her name, gave me a lovely gold necklace with a solitary diamond hanging from it.

I suppose that should count as a souvenir I received, although I didn’t keep it. It was to delicate and pretty for me to wear. I ended up giving it to my girlfriend, Sophie. I’m not sure she fully appreciated what I went through to get it for her. I suppose I couldn’t really tell her all the gory details, now could I?

Author Interview ~ Michael J. Sahno

I’d like to welcome Michael J. Sahno, author of Whizzers, to my blog.

author

Michael was born in Bristol, CT, where he began writing stories at an early age. He obtained a Master of Arts in English from Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY at the age of 24, then went on to become a full-time professional writer in 2001. Whizzers is his fifth full-length work of fiction.

Alright, lets get to the good stuff!

1. What is your name and do you write under a pen name?
Mike Sahno. No pen name, but I do use my full name, Michael J. Sahno, on my book covers.
2. Where do you call home?
Tampa, Florida, USA
3. Obviously, we know you are an author, but some writers have other jobs as well. Do you have another occupation? Do you believe you’re any good at it? Do you like what you do?
I have been a full-time professional writer since 2001, so I’m rapidly approaching the point where I can’t imagine doing anything else ever again. I like what I do, and I’m very, very good at it. Lucky for me, as I’m not good at much of anything else!
4. What is your family like?
I’ve often referred to them as “my lovely dysfunctional family.” That’s accurate. They are dysfunctional, yet they are lovely.
5. If it doesn’t bother you, can you let us know what your childhood home looked like?
Middle class.
6. Do you have any hobbies, other than writing? What do you enjoy doing?
Running, collecting music, attending concerts. Pretty boring.
7. What is your greatest dream?
Would it be too beauty pageant-ish to say “World peace?” How about just world tolerance and politeness?
8. What kind of person do you wish you could be? What is stopping you?
I’ve reached the age where I don’t wish to be any other kind of person than the one I am.
9. Not to pry too much, but do you remember your first love?
Oh dear, I’m afraid so. One of many minor errors in judgment, which were followed by many major ones. Thank God for my current wife.
10. What is the most terrible thing that ever happened to you?
In 2011, I developed tinnitus; broke my ankle; my first wife left me; and I had to have a parotidectomy surgery (don’t Google it; it’s gross). So, it wasn’t one thing, it was nearly an entire year of garbage.
11. What or who inspired you to start writing? And how long have you been writing?
Been writing since I was in high school. Inspired by so many: Kurt Vonnegut, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Balzac, Dickens…a slew of classics.
12. What was your dream growing up? Did you achieve that dream? If so, in what ways was it not what you expected? If you never achieved the dream, why not?
My dream was to be a writer, and I’ve achieved it. I didn’t expect to have to work so hard on finding readers and making sales, but that’s evolved in a positive direction over time.
13. Who is your role model?
No one anybody reading this would know.
14. What is your greatest fear?
Being buried alive.
15. Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks, hard-covers or audio-books?
I prefer paperbacks, but I’ll take an e-book. I don’t listen to audiobooks at all, and hardcovers are too hard to handle for me.
16. Have you ever read a book more than once? And if so, what was it?
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.
17. What is your opinion of novellas?
I think they’re fine. People have such short attention spans these days, and a novella is not as much of a commitment as a door stop book. My latest novel is just slightly longer than a novella.
18. Have you ever read a book just based on its cover?
Probably not.
19. What is your favorite film based on a book?
Sophie’s Choice
20. What is your favorite book genre at the moment?
Metaphysical & Visionary Fiction
21. What books have made it onto your wish list recently? And why?
The Hook by Kathleen Doler is at the top of the list—because I just bought it!
22. What book are you reading at the moment? And in what format?
Just about to start the above mentioned ebook.
23. If you could invite any four (4) celebrities (alive or dead) to your dinner party, who would you invite and why?
Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia, Gandhi & Martin Luther King, Jr. Come on, who wouldn’t want to be here that conversation?

Let’s shift somewhat and talk about your latest story.

1. What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 20 or fewer words, what would you say?
Whizzers. A recovering alcoholic, Mike, discovers his six-year-old nephew, David, travels through time as a whizzer to bring comfort to those in need.
2. Is the above book part of a series?
No.
3. How did you come up with the cover? Who designed the cover of your book(s)?
My designer, Robin Vuchnich came up with a variety of concepts, and this one spoke to me.
4. Did you listen to any particular songs while writing your book(s)?
A lot of classic jazz, ECM label stuff, ambient. Mostly instrumental so I’m not distracted by lyrics while writing.
5. How did you come up with the title for your book(s)?
The subject matter of each is relevant to the titles. Nothing really weird or mysterious here.
6. Do you have a book trailer? If so, where can we watch it?
Not yet.
7. In your latest novel, who is the lead character and can you tell us a little about him/her?
The lead character is a thinly-disguised fictional version of yours truly. I’m really, really nice.
8. What is your character’s greatest strengths?
Empathy.
9. And what are his/her greatest weaknesses?
Empathy.
10. What are some of his/her favorite foods?
I don’t think Mike ever eats anything in the book. Probably Thai curry.
11. What’s a positive quality that your character is unaware that he or she has?
Courage.
12. Will readers like or dislike this character, and why?
They will absolutely love him, because he’s so much me. If they don’t like him, they can buzz off.
13. What first gave you the idea for your latest book?
A very interesting conversation with someone else in recovery.

Let’s talk now about your writing process.

1. What is your writing style like? Are you a pantster or a plotter?
I am a plantser. First, I let the characters lead me down all sorts of dark alleyways. When I no longer have any choice, I do some planning.
2. Have you come across any specific challenges in writing or publishing? What would you do differently the next time?
Platform building and finding the right audience. I did this time all the things I wish I’d done initially.
3. Are you a self-published/Indie author or did you publish through a traditional publishing company?
Self-published/indie with my own publishing company (not Amazon-only).
4. If you’re a self-published/Indie author what made you go that route instead of the traditional publishing route?
I wanted to have complete creative control, and I don’t have any desire to give 15% of what I make to an agent.
5. What’s the best advice that you have been given when it comes to writing? “Want to be writer? You’d better learn to dig ditches, too.”
6. Where can your readers follow you?

Kristen Johnston, George
Hamilton, Christian
Hutcherson, Kendall Ryan
Sanders, and Nathan Gamble
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 93 minutes

Let me first say this… Just because I didn’t really care for this movie doesn’t mean you won’t like it. I don’t typically review movies and books that I don’t care for because I don’t want to discourage anyone else from seeing a movie that they might enjoy.

SHOW RATING OVERVIEW ~ Overall: ★★ (2.5)
Writing/Story: ★★ Acting: ★★★

STORYLINE: James, a college freshman and computer genius, is enlisted by his womanizing roommate, Lance, to code the ultimate hook-up app. But when James discovers that his divorced mother is using the app, unexpected consequences ensue.

MY 2 CENTS:

Writing/Story: ★★ This one is cliché! We’ve seen this story a thousand times… sure it’s updated a bit with the introduction of technology and the invention of an app, but honestly its just ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ meets ‘Sydney White’ meets ‘American Pie’ meets ‘Animal House’. The problem is, this one doesn’t quiet hit the mark.

Acting: ★★★ Leigh-Allyn Baker (Leah Singer) is the one shining light in this film. She does a beautiful job playing the single parent trying to be ok with her situation while inside she is broken.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:

“You must be my, soon to be transferred to another college, roommate.” ~ Lance Black

Today’s writing prompt:

Write about a time everything changed in the blink of an eye!

It was back when I still lived with my mom… One of the last times I ever saw her.

We were going to the hospital; I was scheduled for some tests because I got headaches, all the time.

I never made it into the exam room. I never made it past the lobby.

As we were walking up to the hospital entrance, I saw a woman laying on the ground behind the dumpster. She looked cold… tired… gone.

My mom rushed me away from her. I wasn’t sure what she was so afraid of, not at the time. When they finally wheeled her into the lobby, I could see it—the blood. It was dripping down her arm and onto the floor. I reached out, barely touching her hand as they passed by us. That was when everything changed.

The room started to spin and my headache was instantly gone. I could see, clearer than I had ever seen before, but it wasn’t the hospital lobby I was seeing. I was surrounded by trees and I could hear screaming coming from somewhere behind me. When I turned around, I saw him!

Accepting Your Emotions #MindfulnessMonday 7/15/2019

Today’s #MindfulnessMonday Tip: The only way to stop being trapped in the past or future by your emotions is to start accepting your emotions!

Today’s Mindfulness Exercise:

Understanding and Accepting Your Emotions

Sitting in a quiet, comfortable space, I want you to focus on your breathing. Once you’re fully relaxed – but not sleeping – think about your day and how you’re feeling right now. What is happening in your life? Are you anxious, frustrated, stressed, upset, angry, saddened, or disappointed about anything? If not, I applaud you. If you are feeling any of these emotions lets take a few minutes to accept them.

Whatever the cause, and it really doesn’t matter, you need to understand that your emotions are natural. It’s okay to feel frustrated, angry, sad. It’s okay to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. It’s how you deal with those emotions that matter. Learning to accept them will allow you to deal with them in a healthy, non-disruptive way.

As you focus on the negative emotions you might be feeling, I want you to take long, slow, deep breaths in then release those breaths with the mantra “It’s natural to feel this way. It’s okay for me to feel this way.”

Continue this for 3-5 minutes and repeat any time your emotions start to feel overwhelming.

Mindfulness Journaling:

Keeping a journal is a great way to connect with your emotions. This could be through a joy journal, a gratitude journal, an acts of kindness journal, or even a rant journal. If you’re wondering what a rant journal is… you’re in luck, because that is today’s journaling exercise.

For five minutes, and only five minutes, I give you permission to rant… This is useful when you’re feeling upset, angry, sad, overly emotional in any way. Avoid writing down what you think is causing your emotions… avoid blame. Simply write down the emotions you’re feeling. Recognizing your emotions and understanding that it is natural to feel those things is the first step in allowing yourself to accept your emotions without giving them the power to become overwhelming.

SHOW RATING OVERVIEW [Overall: ★★★★★ (4.5)]

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.

Read my review of Avengers: Endgame HERE!

Watch my video review of Avengers: Endgame: HERE!

MY 2 CENTS:

Writing: ★★★★★ Spider-Man Far From Home is an action packed follow-up to the previous Spider-Man Homecoming that takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Peter Parker is back after the snap – back from the 5-year blip that made half the world’s population disappear and he just wants to be a normal kid. Unfortunately, his is quickly called into action by Nick Fury who manages to hijack Peter’s class trip bringing Peter and his friends directly in the middle of all the action and danger.

Cinematography:  ★★★★★ There are some extremely well-done shots in this movie. The fast-paced movements were edited perfectly. The awesome part… and this is a SPOILER… we get to see it as if we are backstage on a movie set. SO COOL!!!

Story: ★★★★ The story telling in Spider-Man Far From Home is like no other superhero movie that I’ve seen. It plays games with not only Peter Parkers perception of reality, but that of the viewing audience as well. This movie is all about escape, wonder, adventure, heroism, drama, characters. This story dovetails off of Endgame and shows us what the world is like today after everything that happened in Endgame.

This has to be one of my favorite Spider-Man movies ever made. I think one of the main reasons I really enjoyed this story, and the movies in which Tom Holland has played Spider-Man, is because we actually get to see Spider-Man as a kid learning what it means to take on the responsibility of becoming a superhero.

They gave us a mid-credit scene that is incredible… it changes everything you thought you knew about what would be next for Spider-Man. SPOILER – It turns things around and sets up Spider-Man to be the bad guy. Then, they take it one step further and spill his identity to the world by broadcasting his name and photo. So, make sure you stay to watch it!

Acting: ★★★★ Tom Holland is my Spider-Man! He feels completely natural in this role and does a great job.

I loved that they brought in Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) because we only got a little glimpse of him at the end of End Game. Samuel L Jackson just oozes control and he plays the part of Nick Fury so well.

Jake Gyllenhaal playing Quentin Beck (Mysterio) does a fantastic job… You believe him as this hero fighting this massive enemy. You want him to win… you want him to take Peter Parker under his wing, now that Iron Man is gone, and teach him everything he knows… SPOILER – WRONG!!! He is so good a making you believe he is the good guy and it just rips you apart when you find out you were wrong about him the whole time.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:

“I just want to go on my trip with my friends. Europe doesn’t really need a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.” ~ Peter Parker

RATING OVERVIEW ~ (Overall: ★★★ (3.33)
Writing: ★★★ Story: ★★★ Characters: ★★★

AMAZON DESCRIPTION:

Choose-your-own-adventure makes a comeback in The Friar’s Lantern.

So choose wisely – if you can.

MY 2 CENTS / THE CRITICAL POINTS:

Let me start by saying that I received a free copy of this book for my honest impartial review… That is what I mean to give here.

WRITING (★★★): Lets first address the fact that Hickey has chosen the very difficult task of writing a “choose your own adventure” style novel. This concept allows the reader to make decisions throughout the story which then determine the path the characters take. I grew up reading choose your own adventure stories as a kid and have loved them ever since. In fact, my current work in progress is also an interactive adventure novel. If I’m being honest, the main reason I agreed to read and review The Friar’s Lantern is because I wanted to see how he tackled the meticulous mapping of his story threads. His method, I believe, was very different from my own. This is an ambitious novel structure for any author and the fact that he successfully completed his story is impressive.

As for the quality of Hickey’s writing, although it is clear that he is extraordinarily articulate, I felt that some of his descriptives felt forced. Many of his sentences were so long that by the time I reached the end of the stringed together adjectives, I forget what it was he was originally explaining.

“…The stadium, Ozymandian on the bitumen shore, is beset to the north by woodlands, and here the hard blacktop, the steel girders and thick slabs of concrete devolve into dirt and dead yellow leaves and broken branches overhung by untrimmed trees and dotted with tangled bushes. The little laboratory remains as a mere afterthought, its wearied face shrouded by the sallow, emaciated branches of a willow tree, devoid of leaves even now in mid-May, the tree dead or dying as its limbs sag down on despair to scratch the top of the building.”

Unfortunately, because of the wordy writing style, I think I enjoyed the idea of this novel more than the actually story itself.

STORY (★★★★): The concept of the story is intriguing… How do our choices effect our outcomes and do we really have free-will? The main problem I had with this story, aside from the wordiness of the sentences, was the ending. It felt rushed… or rather pre-determined as if he wrote the book knowing the concept and the ending. With the “choose your own adventure” style, I felt that there should have been something more. I didn’t feel as if my choices were really leading the story, it was more that the story was leading my choices.

CHARACTERS (★★★): Honestly, as the reader, you are the main character. With that said, I imagine trying to include any sort of arc or character development had to be hard for the author. The character doesn’t really seem to grow or change throughout the story. However, it does provide for the wonderful opportunity, when reading the story for the second time, to make different choices based on the previous outcome.

Week 22 – #WritingWednesday Challenge

Today is the 22nd Edition of #WritingWednesday!!!

#WritingWednesday is an EASY, STRESS-FREE, weekly writing challenge.

* Read the writing prompt below,
* Spend 5 minutes writing whatever comes to mind, &
* DON'T EDIT what you write! No need for perfection!

The goal is 5 minutes of creativity!

Today I am writing in the voice of Stella, a character in a series I’m currently writing.

Today’s writing prompt:

What is the first thing you do when you wake up every morning?

My name is Stella. Every morning I wake up, in my ten-foot by ten-foot white room, to the sound of an alarm blaring just outside my door at precisely 5:45am. I have fifteen minutes to go to the bathroom, brush my teeth and hair, and change into a freshly cleaned uniform.

At 6:00am the guards open my bedroom door and escort me down a long corridor to the stairwell. We don’t take the elevator; they say the exercise stimulates active brain function. No, we take the stairs down seven floors into the sub-basement of the corporate offices of Operation Atlas. Once there, and only for about ten minutes while we change shifts, I get to see one of the other watchmen.

There are four of us, four watchmen. We work in shifts of six-hours at a time. I’m the youngest, so I start at exactly 6:30am and end at 12:30pm on the dot. They never leave any of us hooked into the system longer than six hours. They don’t say why, but I have a feeling I wouldn’t want to know the reason anyway.

At 12:20pm the next watchmen comes in and they start the shift change protocol. I’m out of the room at exactly 12:30pm and escorted back up the staircase and back to my room.

Acts of Kindness #MindfulnessMonday 7/8/2019

Today’s #MindfulnessMonday Tip: Did you know that a great way to increase your own personal joy and happiness is to increase the joy and happiness of others?

Use visualization to help make a habit of doing at least one act of kindness each and every day!

  1. Step 1: FOCUS ON YOUR BREATHING – Settle into a comfortable position, either sitting or laying down. Focus on your breathing and allow your body to rest, but don’t fall asleep.
  2. Step 2: REFLECTION – Reflect on the people in your life that you will be seeing today, or tomorrow if you’re doing this exercise in the evening. Is there something you could do to help them, make them a little happier, or take some of their stress away?
  3. Step 3: VISUALIZATION – Visualize yourself doing an act of kindness for that person. What would that act of kindness be?
  4. Step 4: EXPLORE YOUR FEELINGS – How does the idea of doing this act of kindness make you feel? Explore these feelings.
  5. Step 5: ACT OF KINDNESS – As soon as possible, do this act of kindness for this friend, family member, co-worker. If you are to busy to do it right away, make sure you write the idea down and plan to do it sooner rather than later.

Today’s Mindfulness Exercises:

1. Breathing with Intention

Utilizing the steps above, focus on your breathing and then, once relaxed think of the people in your life. Who do you know that might need a little help, something to make them smile, or just a call to say hello and brighten their day? Once you have someone in mind decide what you can do, right now, to help increase their joy.

2. Mindfulness Joy Journaling:

I want you to write a list of the people in your life that you think could use a little help or a boost in joy. These can be your friends, family, or even co-workers.

Once you’ve created your list, write down one or two things you can do for each person within the next two weeks. This could be as simple as a call, a hug, sending a letter or a card, or meeting up for coffee.

Then all you have to do is find time over the next couple weeks to complete each of the tasks on your list.
